"Answering The Call": Ford Motor Eyes WWII-Style Production Push For Trump's War Economy One month after we reported that the Trump administration was in talks with U.S. manufacturers about converting idle civilian industrial capacity into weapons production, as conflicts across Eurasia deplete critical weapons stockpiles, Ford Motor signaled Monday morning that it is prepared to support a Western defense-industrial mobilization. Much like during World War II, Ford said it is exploring how its commercial vehicles and related technologies could help governments in North America and Europe quickly build up their defense in the most cost-effective way. "Traditional, purpose-built military hardware takes years to develop and costs billions. By using commercial, off-the-shelf solutions from Ford, governments can access world-class technology at a fraction of the time and cost," Ford wrote in a press release . Ford said its trucks, such as the F-Series and Ranger, along with technologies like Pro Power Onboard, could support military mobility, transport, and field operations. " We have always partnered with government customers in times of peace, crisis, and conflict to serve society. During World War II, Ford's assembly lines produced hundreds of thousands of aircraft, trucks, and engines for the Allied effort ," Ford pointed out. Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that not only Ford, but also GM, Aerospace, and Oshkosh were in talks with the Trump administration to convert civilian industrial capacity into weapons production. The effort to boost the war economy is part of what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has described as putting the defense industrial base on a "wartime footing." Evidence of converting underused civilian industrial capacity has already been seen with the German automaker Volkswagen, which will soon transform its Lower Saxony factory from producing T-Roc Cabriolets to manufacturing parts for the Iron Dome missile interceptor system. Robert Way/iStock Editorial via Getty Images I've stayed 'Neutral' on iQIYI, Inc. ( IQ ). Its first-quarter results were disappointing. But there are tailwinds emerging over a longer time horizon. The new growth engines and unfavorable competitive dynamics for iQIYI were mentioned in my prior March 2, 2026, update . A Slip Into The Red In Q1 The group disclosed its most recent financial numbers in a press release published on Monday, May 18. IQ's topline fell 13.4% year-on-year to CNY6,226M for Jan-Mar '26. This represents a deterioration from 4Q2025's +2.7% rise and 1Q2025's -9.3% contraction. Its bottom line turned negative, going from +CNY304M in 1Q25 and +CNY110M in 4Q25 to -CNY234M during the latest quarter. According to S&P Capital IQ, that was worse than the consensus net loss forecast of CNY215M. My take is that lower licensing-related income, negative fixed-cost leverage, and sustained programming spend contributed to the underperformance. The 1Q26 "content distribution revenue" for the company dropped 42.9% to CNY359M on a YoY basis. At the analyst meeting , management attributed this to a fewer "number of dramas distributed to third parties." I believe that the firm wants to have the best shows solely available on its own platform. But it's equally possible that certain television networks have chosen to procure their slates from other providers. Also, some of IQ's costs are largely non-variable in nature. The "Research & Development (R&D)" expenses were down modestly by 2.1% YoY in 1Q2026. During the same timeframe, the enterprise's turnover suffered from a more severe low-teens decline. This is a clear example of operational deleveraging being a drag on its earnings. The results briefing comments drew attention to how its "original production pipeline consistently delivered new releases." I think that there's a huge price to pay for this commitment. The cost of sales only decreased 1.4% year-on-year to CNY3.7B for the recent three-month period. In my vi...

IgorIgorevich/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Bit Digital, Inc. ( BTBT ) is a company focused on Ethereum ( ETH-USD ) treasury management and AI infrastructure. This exposure comes through its majority stake in WhiteFiber ( WYFI ). Generally speaking, BTBT has pivoted towards combining a large ETH balance sheet and staking activity, while also adding recurring infrastructure revenue from cloud and colocation services. Since that pivot, their legacy mining business has become less relevant. Yet, I also acknowledge that BTBT’s prospects ultimately hinge on highly volatile crypto assets like Ethereum. Despite this, I think BTBT may be a viable speculative “Buy” for investors who are already bullish on ETH, and have a positive macro view on AI/HPC computing demand in the long run. Ethereum Treasury Meets AI Compute Bit Digital, Inc. is a Strategic Asset Company ( SAC ) focused on ETH treasury management and staking. They’re also involved in Artificial Intelligence ( AI ), and High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure through its majority stake in WhiteFiber Inc. ( WYFI ). BTBT was incorporated back in 2017 as Golden Bull Limited, but they renamed to their current name in 2020 . Their principal executive office is located in New York. They recently reported Q1 results , and their business is intriguing due to its ETH and cloud exposure, so I felt it was worthwhile covering this name. Source: Corporate Presentation. February 2026. Previously, BTBT was primarily a Bitcoin ( BTC-USD ) mining company. It still has a digital mining business, but it is a shrinking legacy operation. They have also converted their BTC holdings into ETH over time. But its underlying business mix has also changed sharply. By 2025 , BTBT generated $113.6 million in revenue from cloud services of $68.8 million, digital asset mining of $27.3 million, colocation of $8.9 million, and ETH staking of $7.0 million. More recently, their Q1 2026 sales reached only $27.9 million, including $16.8 mill...

Metals firm Terrafame is studying starting producing scandium, a material used in sectors including defense, from its existing uranium operation in Finland, as Europe seeks to secure supplies of critical minerals. The company, backed by trading house Trafigura Group, has begun a pre-feasibility study to assess obtaining the rare earth metal using a side stream at its uranium recovery plant, it said in a statement on Tuesday. Starting production would make Terrafame Europe’s sole producer of scandium, it said. Rare earths are among the most critical raw materials on the planet — used in everything from iPhones and cars to data centers and MRI machines — and have been caught up in geopolitical tensions between the West and China, which maintains a chokehold over supplies. Scandium was one of the rare earths that Beijing last year restricted exports of in retaliation to US tariffs. Terrafame said that about 85% of global scandium supply comes from China. The company said the targeted end-use for the scandium produced would be in high-performance aluminum alloys, where its properties allow lighter, stronger, and more durable components. It will also approach potential customers and look at opportunities regarding national strategic stockpiling initiatives. “By exploring the recovery of scandium from Terrafame’s existing ore feed, we are utilizing the full value of our resources, while also addressing the need for domestic European supply of this critical metal,” Terrafame Chief Executive Officer Antti Koulumies said in the statement. Terrafame expects to complete the study by year-end and targets a final investment decision early 2027, with production then estimated to start after two years. SimonSkafar/E+ via Getty Images Introduction As we are in the midst of geopolitical turmoil, whether in Ukraine or the Strait of Hormuz, commodity markets have become more front-page news. As the obvious commodities, such as oil and natural gas, occupy the majority of headlines, agricultural commodities have been left more on the sidelines. I find this paradoxical, since the crisis in the Middle East affects agriculture proportionately more than energy, despite their interconnectivity. I'm a sucker for finding trading opportunities in different commodity cycles, so I find this blip in the history books to be an opportune time to dip my toes into a prominent phosphate and potash crop nutrient producer, The Mosaic Company ( MOS ). It's clear that at some point, the Strait of Hormuz will open properly. As such, due to inelastic demand, a dividend yield of 3.88%, and short-term catalysts, I deem this stock to have the potential to make double-digit CAGR returns in the next few years, as the global agriculture market stabilizes from its current headwinds, combined with pent-up demand. I rate Mosaic a Buy. Let's get to it! This conflict disrupts nearly half of the global urea supply and approximately 30% of the ammonia supply, creating a drastic bottleneck and price increase for vital raw materials that are used to make necessary fertilizers for crops that end up on your dinner table. Sulfur, in particular, has 50% of its roots in the Gulf. In contrast, "only" about 20% of the global oil and LNG supply is disrupted due to this event. As experts express their concern that oil prices drive the world into a global recession due to this disruption, what could a cut-off of almost half of vital agricultural materials do to society? Data by YCharts As the price of fertilizers is skyrocketing towards all-time highs, we're entering a phase of chaos and disruption that creates ripe opportunities to make moves in the markets. (George Noble, in collaboration with Seeking Alpha, will host the Best Income Ideas Online Summit on Wednesday, May 20. Register for just $99 here .) Speaking on Seeking Alpha’s Wall Street Breakfast podcast, Noble warned that the traditional 60/40 portfolio no longer offers the same protection because stocks and bonds have become increasingly positively correlated during inflationary periods. “We have fiscal dominance running,” Noble said, pointing to persistent U.S. budget deficits and growing concerns around government debt levels. He described bonds as “a very dangerous place to be” and said investors should “run, not walk” away from the bond market. Noble said he remains bullish on energy stocks, particularly drillers, arguing that years of underinvestment in oil production have created a favorable long-term backdrop even if Middle East tensions eventually ease. Among the names he highlighted were Valaris ( VAL ), Cenovus Energy ( CVE ), and Ensign Energy Services ( ESVIF ), while cautioning that larger integrated producers such as Exxon Mobil ( XOM ) and Chevron ( CVX ) appear more fully valued. The investor also expressed optimism on gold and silver miners, highlighting SSR Mining ( SSRM ) and exchange-traded funds, including VanEck Gold Miners ETF ( GDX ) and VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF ( GDXJ ). He argued mining stocks could continue outperforming even if bullion prices simply hold near current levels.
