EschCollection Stock index futures were higher before the bell as U.S. President Donald Trump extended the pause on attacks against Iran’s energy infrastructure into April. Now, here are five news stories that broke overnight to watch out for: O penAI ad revenue hits milestone: OpenAI’s ( OPENAI ) ad pilot program in the U.S. has generated over $100 million in annualized revenue in just six weeks since launch, according to a company spokesperson. The AI company began showing ads to some users on its free and entry-level paid Go membership tiers. At present, less than 20% of users see the ads, though around 85% are eligible, suggesting significant room to expand monetization efforts. Pentagon weighs troop deployment: The Defense Department is considering deploying up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the Middle East to expand President Trump’s military options as he weighs potential peace talks with Iran, the Wall Street Journal reported. Trump said Thursday he is pausing strikes on Iran’s energy sector until April 6 to allow negotiations to continue beyond his earlier deadline. Anthropic wins court order against ban: Anthropic PBC ( ANTHRO ) secured a preliminary injunction blocking a Trump administration ban on government use of its artificial intelligence technology. U.S. District Judge Rita F. Lin issued the order Thursday, halting the administration’s plan to cut ties with the AI company while the case proceeds in San Francisco federal court. Anthropic argued the move could cost the company billions in lost revenue. Oil could spike to $200 a barrel: Oil prices could surge as high as $200 a barrel if the Iran conflict extends into June and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, Bloomberg reported, citing an analysis from Macquarie Group. Analysts including Vikas Dwivedi assigned a 40% probability to a scenario where war lasting through the second quarter drives historically high real prices. mapo/iStock via Getty Images Portfolio management Greg Wilensky, CFA Michael Keough Investment environment The U.S. short-term fixed income market delivered strong positive quarterly returns, capping off the sector's best calendar year of performance since 2007. Short-term Treasury yields rallied, helping to drive positive returns and a steeper yield curve. Spread sectors broadly outperformed U.S. Treasuries, with securitized sectors doing particularly well. In December, the Federal Reserve (Fed) cut interest rates by 25 basis points (bps) for a third consecutive meeting, bringing policy rates closer to neutral in response to the U.S. unemployment rate hitting a four-year high of 4.6% in November. Other data releases were more positive, with third-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth that surprised on the upside. Despite policymakers indicating that they anticipate one more cut in 2026, futures markets are pricing in an additional two to three cuts in 2026. Speculation also continued to build around who would replace Fed Chair Jerome Powell when his term expires in May, and the degree to which their appointment might signal a shift in the central bank's traditional independence. The U.S. 2-year Treasury yield ended the quarter 14 bps lower, at 3.47%. Investment-grade (IG) corporate spreads widened four bps to 78 bps, while high-yield spreads were virtually unchanged at 266 bps, as investor sentiment remained upbeat. Portfolio review We strive to generate moderate income from credit spread sectors while limiting drawdowns. We seek to do this by constructing the portfolio with credit risk and a modest amount of interest rate risk over the cycle. Our overweight allocation to spread risk was the primary contributor to relative performance. Specific contributors included overweight allocations to commercial mortgage-backed (CMBS), agency and non-agency mortgages, high-yield corporates, and loans. Security selection within IG corporates also helped. A portfolio def...

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images News Meta Platforms ( META ) has increased the investment for its data center campus in El Paso, Texas, to $10B from $1.5B, the company said in a blog post. The company is aggressively pouring resources into artificial intelligence to stay ahead of rivals Google ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ), Amazon ( AMZN ), and Microsoft ( MSFT ), while scaling back on efforts like the metaverse initiative and making frequent job cuts across the board to offset heavy spending bets. The Texas data center, which will generate 1 gigawatt of compute power once online by 2028, is expected to support over 4,000 construction jobs during the peak building phase and about 300 operational jobs once it's finished. The company said it plans to add enough clean and renewable energy to the El Paso grid to match 100% of the electricity use of its data center. Meta plans to use a water-efficient cooling system for its data centers that will recycle and use the same water, resulting in zero usage for the most part during the year. " To put that into perspective, our water use is projected to be similar to a typical golf course in West Texas," the company said Thursday. The company has also pledged to restore 200% of the water consumed by the data center to local watersheds. In February, Meta began construction of its 1 GW data center in Lebanon, Indiana, the investment for which was also estimated at $10B. According to data from Meta , it has 31 data centers in the U.S., including those under construction, 127 solar projects, and 62 water facilities.
