The Trump administration has agreed to award a $1 billion grant to International Business Machines Corp. to build a foundry for producing quantum computing chips, part of a broad strategy to build up the emerging industry and expand the country’s technology leadership. IBM will also invest $1 billion into a new company, called Anderon, that will produce the processors, the company said in a statement on Thursday. Shares in IBM rose 6.52% in pre-market trading in New York on Thursday. The deal is part of a broader $2 billion support package from the US Commerce Department for quantum computing. GlobalFoundries Inc. , a semiconductor firm developing specialized chips for quantum computing, is receiving $375 million, the company said in a statement. Additional grants of about $100 million will go to a range of public and private companies. D-Wave Quantum Inc. , Rigetti Computing Inc. , Infleqtion Inc. and PsiQuantum said in separate statements Thursday that they had signed letters of intent with Commerce for awards of up to $100 million each from the agency. Others lined up include Atom Computing Inc. and Quantinuum , while the startup Diraq will get $38 million. Funding for the deal will come from the 2022 Chips and Science Act and give the government a stake in the companies, according to the report. The deals are not final. Governments are lining up funds for quantum computing, a nascent technology that researchers believe could provide a range of new capabilities in everything from drug discovery to computing encryption standards. Though machines are primarily used for research purposes for now, their promised capabilities could pose a threat to national security, breaking the systems that protect banks and government data. 4kodiak/iStock via Getty Images Investment Thesis I am rating Kodiak Gas Services, Inc. ( KGS ) a Strong Buy because I believe the company is sitting inside one of the biggest infrastructure bottlenecks in the AI cycle. KGS is not just a contract compression business. It is becoming a natural gas infrastructure and distributed power platform that can help data centers, microgrids and industrial customers solve the speed-to-power problem. I am saying this because the evidence is already showing in the numbers. In Q1 2026 , KGS generated record adjusted EBITDA of $190.1Mn and also raised full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $820Mn to $860Mn. The company also closed the DPS acquisition, procured over 260MW of additional power generation capacity, and also expects to receive 61MW in 2026. The company is also targeting 300MW to 500MW of annual power additions from 2027 through 2030. That is the key reason I am rating KGS a Strong Buy, with a price target of $130 per share. The part that makes my thesis compelling is the EBITDA conversion. The company's management expects power investments to generate more than 15% unlevered returns and EBITDA build multiples around 5x. That means that every $500 million of deployed power capital can theoretically support about $100 million of EBITDA once the assets are operational and contracted. In simple terms, I am saying that the power business gives KGS a second EBITDA engine. The old business provides cash flow, customer relationships and operating discipline. The new business provides the growth curve. That combination is why I think the stock deserves more than a traditional compression multiple. My view is that Kodiak is becoming a "speed-to-power" company. That matters because data center customers are not just shopping for the lowest power cost. They are also paying for certainty, uptime and faster energization. Data center contracts usually take 10 to 15 years, with many customers asking for extension options, according...

(00:14) SpaceX ( SPCX ) IPO filing shows company built around Elon Musk, Starlink, AI Age. (01:52) PepsiCo ( PEP ) eyes selective price increases due to increased costs. (03:59) This is an abridged transcript. Nvidia ( NVDA ) closed the day Wednesday 1.3% higher ahead of its earnings release and is up 0.2% in premarket action. Nvidia reported another blockbuster quarter, beating estimates, with revenue surging 85% year-over-year to $81.62B. The company also unveiled an $80B share buyback program and raised its dividend by 2400% from a penny to a quarter. Looking ahead to the fiscal second quarter, Nvidia expects revenue to be $91B, plus or minus 2%. The company also said that it does not expect any revenue from China for the period. Analysts had expected the company to generate $87.3B in revenue. CEO Jensen Huang said the company has “largely conceded” China’s artificial intelligence chip market to Huawei, as U.S. export restrictions continue to reshape the global AI semiconductor landscape. “The demand in China is quite large,” Huang told CNBC’s Sara Eisen. “Huawei is very, very strong. They had a record year, they’ll likely, very likely, have an extraordinary year coming up, and their local ecosystem of chip companies are doing quite well, because we’ve evacuated that market.” “We’ve really largely conceded that market to them,” he added. In the interview with CNBC, Huang struck a cautious tone on prospects for any near-term reopening of the Chinese market, saying Nvidia ( NVDA ) told investors to “expect nothing” regarding approvals to sell advanced chips into the country. SpaceX’s ( SPACE ) long-awaited S-1 filing is giving investors their clearest look yet at a company that is no longer just a rocket launch provider. Ameren is likely to see its shares climb as it positions itself as an energy supplier for the data center boom, according to JPMorgan. The investment bank upgraded the public utility company to overweight from neutral. It also hiked its price target on shares to $126 from $120, implying 16% upside from Wednesday's close. "With data center datapoints piling up, we have higher confidence in the company's growth outlook and see the potential for the EPS [compound annual growth rate] to inflect higher," analyst Jeremy Tonet said in a note to clients. AEE YTD mountain AEE year to date Ameren has struck agreements to provide electricity for data centers in Illinois and Missouri, which Tonet thinks will power growth. The company's deals in Missouri are particularly promising due to the state's data center friendly regulations, per Tonet. "We have grown to appreciate [Missouri's] very constructive regulatory environment, where large load tariffs, rate design…aid affordability and all stakeholders," Tonet wrote. "While [Illinois] rebased in recent years and remains steady, [Missouri] provides a relatively robust political backdrop (no gubernatorial election), absent the headline risk and election noise pervading many states." The Street is split on Ameren. Of the 18 analysts covering Ameren, 9 have a buy or strong buy rating on the stock, while 9 have a hold on it, LSEG data shows. Several hours after dark in a quiet Caribbean neighbourhood, a cluster of environmental activists gather on plastic chairs between a mango tree and a courtyard wall emblazoned with the words: “Colombia, respira!” (breathe Colombia). So many people have turned up that some are forced to stand. That is because tonight’s speaker, Susana Muhamad, is one of the most admired socio-environmental campaigners in the world and this is a moment of profound historical significance. This month’s presidential election will decide whether Colombia remains a global leader on the climate and exemplar of “popular environmentalism”, or whether it switches to the side of fracking, mining and other forms of fossil-fuelled extractivism. In other words, whether it will change from green to grey. The movement is braced for a struggle. President Gustavo Petro of Pacto Historico is constitutionally barred from serving a consecutive second term so the party has selected Iván Cepeda to run for president and continue his policies. The far-right candidate, Abelardo De La Espriella, and centre-right candidate, Paloma Valencia, are both enthusiastic about reopening the oil spigot and fracking. US interference is a big concern with the US president, Donald Trump, talking of military intervention in Colombia. If we don’t win, our country will be another in Latin America aligned with Donald Trump. We have to win. Otherwise, everything we’re talking about will be completely suspended for four years. Goodbye.” Muhamad speaks of the progress Colombia has made in declaring its part of the Amazon rainforest a fossil fuel-...

As stated in the title, that article was prompted by the updates it provided in its 5 th Developer Convention (DevCon5) and rated the stock as a buy. Since then, the company has reported its earnings report (ER) for Q1 2026. Many aspects of the ER have been quickly covered by other SA authors. As such, in this article, I will focus on one aspect that I feel could use more elaboration: the rule of 40 scores (referred to as the rule or R40 hereafter). If you read the management’s comments from the ER, the following was the first line from its CEO Alex Karp : “Palantir's Rule of 40 score has soared to 145%. We have shattered the metric, a feat matched only by other fellow AI infrastructure companies…”. In the rest of this article, I will walk 1) through how PLTR calculated this score based on its FQ1 numbers and show the caveats, 2) argue why such a score is an exceptionally rare feat for a software company doing over $1.6 billion in quarterly revenue, and 3) probably most importantly, identify the top factors that could keep sustaining a superb R40 score going forward. These considerations have already led me to reiterate my buy rating based on the FQ1 updates. Let me start with how the numbers from PLTR’s FQ1 2026 ER into the R40 calculation. As shown in its financial stamen below, PLTR’s total revenue reached $1.63 billion, translating into a YOY growth of about 85%. Then, as also shown, Palantir’s Adjusted Operating Margin was 60% for the quarter. Plugging both numbers into the R40 equation yields the final score its CEO quoted (85% YoY Growth + 60% Adjusted Margin = 145% R40 score). With this background, I will next elaborate more on the significance of this score. PLTR Q1 ER PLTR’s R40 score: a historcial perspective This is a good time ...

Republican senators have queried the timing and lack of detail in secret service bid to add money to the Department for Homeland security bill Hello and welcome to the US politics live blog. Senate Republicans could strip Donald Trump’s lavish White House ballroom complex from the Department of Homeland Security funding bill after members queried the timing and lack of detail in the $1bn Secret Service request. The US issued a federal criminal indictment against Raúl Castro , Cuba’s former president, potentially paving the way for a US military raid to capture him. Two police officers attacked by rioters at the US Capitol during the January 6 riot sued Donald Trump over plans to create a $1.776bn “anti-weaponization” fund. Brian Fitzpatrick , a Republican congressman from a Philadelphia-area district carried by Kamala Harris in 2024, pledged on Wednesday to “try to kill” the $1.776bn slush fund created by Donald Trump ’s Department of Justice this week, which could be used to compensate rioters who tried to keep Trump in office after he lost the 2020 election. Republican senator Bill Cassidy denounced two of Trump’s passion projects: $1bn in taxpayer funding for the White House ballroom the president can’t stop talking about, and the $1.776bn slush fund he plans to use to reward supporters who stormed the Capitol to try to keep him in office despite losing the 2020 election. A former federal prosecutor in Florida pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to charges that she illegally emailed herself a copy of the unreleased special counsel report on Trump’s mishandling of classified documents. A two-year-old girl has died of heatstroke in north-west Spain after being accidentally left in her father’s car during an unseasonably hot spell that could push temperatures in some areas to 38C (100F). The child, who has not been named, went into cardiac arrest on Wednesday afternoon after spending several hours inside the vehicle in the Galician town of Brión after her father forgot to take her to nursery. According to media reports, the man had driven his older child to school that morning and had intended to drop the toddler at nursery when he was distracted by a phone call. Instead of heading to the nursery, he went to work, leaving the child in the car. The alarm was raised that afternoon when the girl’s mother went to pick her up from the nursery at 3pm and was told she had not been dropped off that morning. Realising what had happened, the parents called the emergency services and the girl was taken to a health centre in the nearby town of Bertamiráns, where she was pronounced dead. Police are investigating the incident and the family is receiving psychological support. Brión town council declared two days of official morning for the girl and said a minute’s silence would be held in her memory on Friday. “We would like to offer our deepest condolences and all our support to the family of the little girl who lost her life in Brión yesterday, as well as to all her friends, while we make all the municipal resources they need available to them in these difficult times,” the council said. “May she rest in peace.” Spain has been bracing for the kind of heat more commonly associated with midsummer. The state meteorological office, Aemet, warned that the “exceptionally high temperatures” could reach 36-38C in some southern parts of the country. “Throughout May, we have recorded a prolonged period of below-normal temperatures,” it said. “Now comes the complete opposite: a period of very high temperatures for this time of year across most of the country. In fact, som...

According to the report, the U.S. Commerce Department plans to award IBM ( IBM ), +7.1% premarket, about $1B in funding as part of a broader push to accelerate quantum computing development. GlobalFoundries ( GFS ), up +10.8%, is expected to receive about $375M, while most other companies will receive around $100M each, except for startup Diraq, which is slated to get $38M . Other quantum computing firms slated for funding include D-Wave Quantum ( QBTS ), Rigetti Computing ( RGTI ), and Infleqtion ( INFQ ) , though the deals have not yet been finalized. The government is expected to take minority equity stakes in each of the quantum companies, extending a recent trend of similar deals involving companies such as rare-earth magnet maker Vulcan Elements and MP Materials ( MP ) . The Commerce Department did not disclose the size or structure of the planned stakes. The funding for the quantum computing deals will come from the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, which allocated capital for emerging and early-stage technology projects. The report gave a boost to quantum computing stocks across the sector, with some of the biggest premarket gainers including: Rigetti Computing ( RGTI ) +12.7%, IonQ ( IONQ ) +6.8%, D-Wave Quantum ( QBTS ) +10.5%, Arqit Quantum ( ARQQ ) +5%, SEALSQ ( LAES ) +4.9%, Quantum Computing ( QUBT ) +9.8%, Infleqtion ( INFQ ) +16.9%. By Hyunjoo Jin and Heekyong Yang SEOUL, May 21 (Reuters) - The pay deal reached between Samsung Electronics and its union is being hailed as a win for the company which gained key concessions and averted a massive strike, as well as for its memory chip workers - some of whom will receive $416,000 bonuses. Samsung's shares surged 8.5% to a record high on Thursday after the planned 18-day strike by some 48,000 domestic workers was suspended. Union members will vote on the government-mediated agreement between May 22 and May 27. The union's leader has said he expects it to be ratified. Samsung workers had been furious about the large gap in bonuses with their peers at smaller rival SK Hynix which had beaten Samsung to the punch in delivering advanced AI chip units to Nvidia, bolstering its fortunes. Despite intense pressure from workers to match or outdo SK Hynix, Samsung has delivered hefty bonuses without being as generous as its rival. "Samsung did a better deal than SK Hynix in terms of costs," said Park Jun-young, a former human resources official for Samsung's chip division who now writes about the industry. Calling the deal a victory for Samsung, he noted it had been less generous in per-person compensation, but added that the terms continue to put the conglomerate at risk of having talented workers poached by its rival. SAMSUNG BONUSES SMALLER AND MOSTLY IN STOCK Under the deal, all chip workers will receive 50% of their annual salary as a regular bonus in cash, according to the union. On top of that, Samsung will set aside 10.5% of operating profit for special bonuses which will take the form of stock. Of those special bonuses, this year 40% will be distributed across its entire chip business and the rest used to reward memory chip unit employees. A memory chip worker with a base salary of 80 million won, for example, is expected to receive a total bonus of around 626 million won or $416,000 this year, a union source said, declining to be identified.
