The Dow Jones Industrials found support on the +12% jump in IBM following reports that the company is receiving a $1 billion grant from the US government to take a stake in its quantum-computing business. Join 200K+ Subscribers: Stocks initially moved lower on Thursday on concerns that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz could worsen energy disruptions and fuel inflation. Crude prices jumped more than +2% early on Thursday after Reuters reported that Iran's Supreme Leader said enriched uranium must stay in Iran, as sending the material abroad would leave the country more vulnerable to future attacks by the US and Israel. The report tempers optimism that the US and Iran were moving closer to a deal to end the war. The markets are awaiting Iran’s official response to the latest US proposals to reopen the Strait. kodda/iStock via Getty Images The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gave final approval Thursday for the Dakota Access oil pipeline to continue operating its contentious Missouri River crossing, nearly a decade after protests almost scuttled the project. The decision to grant the key easement means the pipeline will keep operating but with added conditions for detecting leaks and monitoring groundwater, among others, which the Army Corps said are intended to reduce risks to Lake Oahe, the Missouri River, and surrounding communities. The project has faced years of legal and political challenges centered on the Lake Oahe crossing. Pipeline operator Energy Transfer ( ET ) praised the decision, saying the pipeline has been safely operating for nearly 10 years and is critical to U.S. energy infrastructure. The $3.8B pipeline has been transporting oil since June 2017 from North Dakota's Bakken oil field to a terminal in southern Illinois, transporting ~750 K bbl/day. The stock moved as traders continued reacting to sharp swings tied to a short-seller report and bullish pushback from Roth Capital, and investors are watching how volatility evolves around these opposing views. The company’s trading volume reached 79.1 million shares, which is about 282% above compared with its three-month average of 20.2 million shares. T1 Energy went public in 2020 and has fallen 11% since its IPO. How the markets moved today S&P 500 (^GSPC +0.17%) added 0.18% to finish Thursday at 7,445.72, while the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC +0.09%) inched up 0.09% to close at 26,293. What this means for investors T1 Energy shares finished nearly flat despite heavy trading volume, following a sharp Wednesday rally of more than 25% that extended the stock’s one-month gain to more than 70%. Markets continued to weigh short-seller allegations against Roth Capital’s supportive view, while the company’s operating anchor remains its G1_Dallas module facility, where T1 maintained 2026 production guidance of 3.1 GW to 4.2 GW and cited progress in qualifying international cell vendors. Growing electricity needs from AI data centers are helping T1’s U.S. solar manufacturing strategy align with a broader infrastructure trend. The company is also building supply partnerships with Hemlock Semiconductor and Corning. Upcoming news about financing for the G2_Austin cell project and production at the Dallas facility will reveal if T1 can turn this momentum into real manufactu...

The International Monetary Fund ’s executive board approved Argentina’s latest program review to unlock about $1 billion, a vote of confidence in President Javier Milei despite missing a key program target. The board approved the funds after IMF staff finished the second review of Argentina’s $20 billion debt deal, the Washington-based lender said in a statement Thursday. The approval brings total disbursements under the program, known as an extended fund facility, to about $15.8 billion. “Reform momentum has strengthened with approval of key fiscal, trade and labor legislation and refinements to the monetary and FX framework, contributing to a buildup in reserve buffers and improving Argentina’s capacity to manage shocks,” according to the statement. Read More: Argentina Economy Picked Up Much More Than Expected in March Argentina refrained from purchasing foreign reserves until this year as Milei has sought to keep inflation at bay. The central bank has since purchased more than $8 billion in hard currency. But the government has yet to tap international debt markets, which means dollars purchases have flowed out to meet mounting foreign currency debt obligations. IMF directors described the program’s performance as “mixed until end-2025” due in part to delays on rebuilding external buffers. They have also acknowledged improvement in reserves after missing the net-reserves accumulation target in December, and added that Argentina should move toward securing “timely and durable” access to international markets. “Directors welcomed the central bank’s FX purchase program and called for a sustained implementation, combined with continued exchange rate flexibility,” the statement added. Milei opted against issuing debt earlier this year because he deemed interest rates too high, only to see them rise further on the Iran war. The country was recently upgraded to B- by Fitch Ratings, a move that could further compress interest rates if echoed by peer agencies. Argentina ...

Two-time Nascar Cup Series champion Kyle Busch has died at 41 after being hospitalized with a severe illness, Nascar said in a Thursday statement. “We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport’s greatest and fiercest drivers. He was 41 years old,” the racing organization wrote on social media. “We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community.” No cause of death was given. Busch’s family had announced his hospitalization earlier on Thursday, saying he wouldn’t compete as planned at this weekend’s Nascar race in Charlotte, North Carolina. During a Nascar Cup Series race on 10 May at Watkins Glen, Busch radioed in to his crew requesting medical aid from Dr Bill Heisel and a “shot” after the race. According to the TV broadcast, Busch had been struggling with a sinus cold that was exacerbated by the intense G-forces and elevation changes at the upstate New York road course. Busch continued to race and finished eighth. Busch ranked 24th in the Cup Series standings, with two top-10 finishes in 12 races this season. The Las Vegas native won championships in 2015 and 2019. Busch was in his fourth season at Richard Childress Racing after winning titles with Joe Gibbs Racing. Busch won 234 races across Nascar’s three national series, more than any driver in history. His last win came in 2023. A polarizing figure known as “Rowdy” and “Wild Thing” for his post-race fights, regular feuds with other drivers and sometimes outlandish behavior, the multi-talented Busch stormed on the Cup Series scene in 2005 by winning rookie of the year. Over the course of his career, he won 63 Cup Series races. Busch is survived by his wife, Samantha, and children Brexton and Lennix. Associated Press contributed reporting
