Looking at your veg patch with fresh eyes can be inspiring – and a helpful way of rectifying past mistakes Regular readers might remember me having a wobbly time in the garden last year. Life was lifing (as the kids say) and with that came many hiccups and failures. The veg patch had a wanton disregard for my hopes during growing season, which taught me the importance of finding value and beauty in what was growing, instead of lamenting all that was not. This season, I’ve found myself approaching the veg patch with a more determined attitude. It’s been six years since my partner and I cleared the couch grass and nettles from the parcel of earth at the bottom of our garden, moved a ton or so of compost on to it to create vegetable beds, and grew the first crops in our new home. And now feels like the right time to take a look at our growing space with fresh eyes. It’s not a blank space, of course, but I’ve been asking myself how I’d grow here if I’d just adopted this patch. I was dismayed that he did not know who William S Paley was, or about the leading role he played in creating CBS. Paley was my grandfather, a man whom I adored and revered. I also knew and worked for Fred W Friendly, who had been president of CBS News and created the documentary program See It Now in collaboration with the legendary broadcaster Edward R Murrow. Murrow, of course, had grown to national prominence for his gripping radio broadcasts during the second world war. Together, their tireless work changed the course of US history. The defence secretary, John Healey, has urged Nigel Farage to provide transparency about the £5m gift he received from a billionaire businessman, in particular over whether any of the sum could have been linked to Russia-connected profits. In a letter to the Reform UK leader, Healey also asked him to address the possibility that the war against Iran might boost the revenues of AML Global, an aviation fuel company owned by Christopher Harborne, who gave Farage the £5m in 2024. Farage initially supported the US-Israeli attacks on Iran. The letter, seen by the Guardian, asked Farage to confirm that none of the sum was “derived from transactions with Russian state-linked energy companies”, and to give assurances that AML Global had complied fully with all sanctions on Russian energy since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In a statement to the Guardian, AML Global said it had complied fully with all UK and international sanctions, and screened any business partners to ensure the same. Reform UK and Farage were contacted for comment. The Guardian revealed last month that shortly before the 2024 general election, Farage was given £5m by Harborne, a British-Thai dual citizen based in Thailand. Farage did not disclose the money at the time, and it only emerged when the Guardian reported it. He has argued that because it was an unconditional gift, and received before he announced he would run for parliament, there was no need to declare it once he did become an MP. However, after a complaint from the Conservatives, Farage faces a formal investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog, Daniel Greenberg, into whether he should have done. In the letter, Healey noted that AML Global supplies jet fuel through a network of “main and regional oil companies” covering more than 1,200 locations worldwide, including central Asia, the Gulf and eastern Europe. For decades, publishing a paper in Nature was regarded as the ultimate academic achievement in China – a fast track to promotions, research grants, hospital appointments and elite national talent programmes. But a growing wave of academic fraud allegations could be turning that prestige into a liability. Over the past two months, Chinese social media platforms have been flooded with accusations targeting papers published in Nature and its subsidiaries, including Nature Cancer, Nature Cell Biology and Nature Nanotechnology. A Chinese woman who has planted trees in the deserts of Inner Mongolia for decades has contacted an American man who donated US$5,000 to her and invited him to visit a forest that came into being because of his funding. That was the case this week when the Swedish government picked a French naval supplier to provide it with four new fighting vessels , with deliveries to start in 2030. (For the uninitiated: today’s frigate is essentially a high-tech missile warship.) The decision to award the contract to Naval Group made waves not only for its roughly $5 billion price tag, but also because the deal underscores Sweden’s aim to play a bigger role in defending NATO maritime interests. One particular focus is the Baltic Sea, where Western authorities have already boarded ships involved in Russia’s so-called shadow fleet on several occasions. Another winner in the deal was Swedish defense group Saab, which will supply weapons systems for the vessels. Layoff notifications have long included wording about tough decisions in challenging times. Now, they’re also nodding at how artificial intelligence is reshaping workforces and companies’ priorities. When Meta began laying off roughly 8,000 employees worldwide this week amid massive investments in AI, CEO Mark Zuckerberg dubbed it “the most consequential technology of our lifetimes.” Zuckerberg’s memo, which was shared online by New York Times reporter Mike Isaac, emphasized that the “companies that lead the way will define the next generation.” He’s not the only one pushing such messaging. Chuck Robbins, the CEO of Cisco, said in a memo to staff this month that the companies that “will win in the AI era will be those with focus, urgency, and the discipline to continuously shift investment toward the areas where demand and long-term value creation are strongest,” according to Business Insider. Being one of those winners meant hard choices, he said. The company planned to cut about 4,000 roles. Bezos rejected the idea that simply raising his tax bill would solve the problem facing lower-income Americans. With a net worth estimated at about $275 billion, Bezos has long been a target for critics who argue billionaires benefit from a tax system that treats wealth more favorably than wages. Bezos also addressed the criticism often aimed directly at billionaires like him: that the ultra-wealthy should pay more. “The Amazon CFO could find 3% in the federal budget on a Tuesday afternoon,” he said. “There is so much waste in government spending.” To be sure, individual income taxes are the single largest revenue source for the U.S. federal government — so even a relatively small drop in that category could still amount to a meaningful sum. But Bezos argued that Washington could make up the difference by cutting waste. “Why is a nurse in Queens who makes $75,000 a year paying more than $1,000 a month in taxes?” he asked. “That’s $1,000 a month that could help with rent or groceries … We shouldn’t be asking this nurse in Queens to send money to Washington. They should be sending her an apology.” He used a Queens nurse as an example. That helps explain Bezos’s argument: If the bottom 50% account for only a small slice of federal income-tax revenue, eliminating that burden could matter far more to struggling households than it would to Washington’s overall revenue picture. After posting solid Q1 earnings reports, artificial intelligence (AI) stocks remain the market's must-have darlings. There's something else happening, however, that too many investors are overlooking. That's a ramp-up of the nation's industrial activity. Seemingly against the odds, the Federal Reserve's measure of domestic industrial production hit a six-year high in April, while the Institute of Supply Management's manufacturing activity index remains in the positive territory it entered at the beginning of this year. Like it or not, the United States' factories are revving their engines, with at least some of the domestic output that had been lost of late rematerializing. This is likely only the beginning of a prolonged secular shift, though, giving American companies greater control over their production and leaving them less subject to geopolitical turmoil. With that as the backdrop, here's a rundown of three industrial sector stocks you might want to step into sooner than later, before any more capital is invested in the business, spurring economic growth that workers/consumers currently feel may never be coming. Deere & Company It seems a little counterintuitive (at first). But, farms don't invest aggressively in their own output when times are hard, and profits are thin. They hunker down. The industry actually spends the most when commodity prices are high and profit margins are wide, in an effort to squeeze out as much profitability as possible while it's possible to do so. And it's now very possible to do so. While operating costs like feed and fuel are high for farmers right now, just like they are for everybody else, the market prices of farm-food products continue to inch higher as well. In less volatile times, the memory of the Arab spring would be fresh in our minds. But with the Iran war already stealing attention from Gaza (let alone Ukraine), you may forget the intensity of the revolutionary wave across north Africa and the Middle East 15 years ago. That was when social media came into its own, building solidarity as people took to the streets in pro-democracy protests: in Tunisia where fruit seller Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire; in Libya where the people rose up against Col Gaddafi; and in Egypt where protests across the country and especially in Cairo’s Tahrir Square led to the ousting of President Mubarak. At the time, it felt like things were changing for the better. Mariem Omari was there to see it, first as an observer for the UN relief and works agency, then compiling human rights reports for Médecins du Monde. An Arabic speaker from a Lebanese-Scottish family, she arrived in Jordan to keep an eye on Israel and Iraq a few months before receiving reports of unrest in Tunisia. Her play, Revolution Days, is based on those events. Samira, an idealistic young aid worker, full of gung-ho spirit, goes from observing the aftermath of settler violence in the West Bank and the effects of American white phosphorus gas in Iraq to more direct encounters with rebels and refugees displaced by government forces. Played by a sparky Olivia Hemmati in Shilpa T-Hyland’s production for the Citizens and Omari’s Bijli company, Samira is at once a dispassionate observer, a champion of change and a psychologically vulnerable young woman. She thinks she can catalogue the evidence of rape, injury and hunger with impunity, but the hair falling out of her head tells a different story. Her fury at the world’s inaction only serves to further damage her mental health. This fearless aid worker is diagnosed with secondary traumatic stress. About TAT This Israeli-based company serves the commercial and military aerospace and ground defense industries. According to its 20-F for 2025 , it does this through three main areas: Thermal Management; Power and Actuation; and Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul [MRO]. TAT is a relatively small company, with a market cap of $513.35 million. It competes with much larger firms including Honeywell International Inc. ( HON ) and AAR Corp. ( AIR ). Management argues TAT has competitive strengths that keep it competitive including proactive customer engagement, investing in new technologies, and enhanced engineering capabilities.
