When Marco Rubio was confirmed as US Secretary of State last year, fireworks of optimism went off in New Delhi. Given his years as a senator championing a pro-India, staunchly anti-China posture, policymakers anticipated an unprecedented alignment. However, as Rubio arrives in India on Saturday for a four-day visit spanning Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi, he enters a relationship strained by transactional politics, structural deadlock and mounting strategic unease over Washington’s recent moves. While the Indian Embassy in Washington has hailed Rubio’s trip as a “new chapter” in bilateral ties, Rubio’s first visit to India as US President Donald Trump’s top diplomat and national security adviser is expected to focus largely on damage control. Advertisement That includes briefing Indo Pacific partner New Delhi on Trump’s high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this month, an event that left India rather prominently on the outside looking in. 02:12 Trump to impose 25% tariff on India from August 1, plus ‘penalty’ for Russia ties

Danaher Corp . has completed what is being called a record $3 billion private-placement bond sale. The Washington, D.C.-based life sciences company sold roughly 2.38 billion Swiss francs of notes in seven parts to help finance its acquisition of US-listed diagnostics firm Masimo Corp. , according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not be named. Mizuho Financial Group Inc. , Citigroup Inc. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. arranged the sale, the person said. The deal is the largest in what’s considered the traditional private-placement market of raising capital directly from large institutional investors, according to Richard Thompson , Mizuho’s head of debt private placements. Danaher’s issuance “demonstrated the significant depth of the private-placement market for cross-currency transactions,” particularly larger acquisitions, Thompson told Bloomberg News. Spokespeople for Citi, Goldman and Danaher either declined to comment or didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The bonds mature in five to 30 years, the person said. The largest tranche, a 648 million franc 15-year note, pays annual interest of 2.38% and priced 1.4 percentage point over the swap rate, the person added. Companies, particularly firms like hyperscalers that have been raising hundreds of billions of dollars to fund artificial intelligence efforts, are broadening their financing sources amid efforts to avoid fatiguing any particular group of investors. Amazon.com Inc. last week sold its first Swiss bonds , raising 2.8 billion francs. Danaher had already extended beyond the dollar-debt market before this week’s franc note sale. It priced €3 billion ($3.5 billion) of bonds last month , its first euro-denominated notes since 2020, to help fund the purchase of Masimo. That takeover, valued at $9.9 billion including debt, is expected to close later this year. Meanwhile, a Danaher unit last October sold 1.25 billion francs of broadly syndicated notes. The company’s last dollar-bond is...

Singham Network Mobilizes To Defend Raúl Castro After DOJ Indictment Via American Greatness, Key organizations and activists tied to the CCP-linked Singham Network rapidly moved to defend former Cuban dictator Raúl Castro following this week’s Justice Department indictment tied to the 1996 shootdown of civilian aircraft flown by Brothers to the Rescue. The indictment, unveiled by the United States Department of Justice , charges Castro and others in connection with the deaths of four men after Cuban MiG fighter jets destroyed two civilian planes over international waters near Cuba nearly three decades ago. Prosecutors said the aircraft were outside Cuban territory and heading away from the island when they were attacked. In response, a collection of far-left organizations linked to Marxist businessman Neville Roy Singham quickly launched a coordinated public campaign condemning the indictment and echoing talking points from the Cuban Communist government. Among the groups defending Castro were Party for Socialism and Liberation, The People’s Forum, Code Pink, and Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research. Code Pink, co-founded by Singham’s wife Jodie Evans, accused the Trump administration of fabricating the case to justify military action against Cuba. “They’re not seeking justice for a downed flight. The Trump administration is fabricating a pretext for military intervention,” the group said after Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the indictment. Code Pink later called the indictment a “sham” and defended Cuba’s actions in shooting down the civilian aircraft. The group argued that “International law guarantees any country, including Cuba, the right to respond to airspace violations after exhausting diplomatic means to do so.” The DOJ indictment, however, alleges the planes were flying over international waters and that the pilots received no warning before being destroyed by the Cuban military. The Party for Socialism and Liberation similarly cond...

Pilots’ voices from the last seconds of a fatal cargo plane crash have been re-created by Internet sleuths using software and AI tools. The spread of reconstructed audio recordings has prompted a US government agency to suspend all public access to its database of civil transportation accidents—because federal law prohibits investigators from publicly releasing audio from cockpit voice recorders. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) usually shares factual reports and evidence gathered from investigations of aircraft crashes and other civil transportation incidents. But on May 21, the NTSB announced that the online docket system containing such information was “temporarily unavailable” as it reviewed the publicly available materials that had enabled people to re-create cockpit audio recordings from aircraft disasters. “The NTSB is aware that advances in image recognition and computational methods have enabled individuals to reconstruct approximations of cockpit voice recorder audio from sound spectrum imagery released as part of NTSB investigations, including the ongoing investigation of the crash last year of UPS flight 2976 in Louisville, Kentucky,” according to an NTSB statement . “The NTSB does not release cockpit audio recordings.” Read full article Comments

Key Points Summer can be a rough time on Wall Street, as families take vacations and trading slows down. Market history suggests that the period from May to Oct. yields less impressive returns. 10 stocks we like better than Vanguard S&P 500 ETF › The S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), which you can easily buy with an exchange-traded fund like Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO), has turned lower in recent days. The ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, high energy prices, and broader inflation have consumers and investors worried about an economic slowdown. Could the market lose some steam heading into the summer? The best months and the worst months "Sell in May and go away" is an old Wall Street saying that highlights a historical performance difference between certain periods of the year. There's some data to back the saying up, too. Historically, the S&P 500 index has gained around 2% between May and Oct., but gained 7% between Nov. and April. Small-cap and global stocks see a similar pattern, according to Fidelity Investments. Will AI create the world's first trillionaire? Our team just released a report on the one little-known company, called an "Indispensable Monopoly" providing the critical technology Nvidia and Intel both need. Continue » The recent market turn could be a harbinger of this historical pattern repeating itself. Still, there are nuances to consider. For example, according to Fidelity, the S&P 500 index has lost around 2% of its value between May and Oct. since 1990, even worse than the longer-term record. But the finance giant notes that the S&P 500 has "fallen 56% of the time." In other words, 44% of the time since 1990, the market rose over the May to Oct. span. The down years clearly offset the up years, but selling in May and going away doesn't always work out. Indeed, averages often mask fairly large year-by-year differences when data are examined year by year. There are reasons to be worried, but stick to your plan To be fair, ...
