What I think explains the underperformance of the stock is that it is not due to any weakness in its finances, but merely that the market is concerned about the possibility of disruption within the Search category and rising capital expenditures related to AI. AI Is Expanding the Economic Surface of Search The latest earnings results of Alphabet did not come with any surprises; however, the report contained several trends that have changed the overall impression about the company's future prospects. The Q4 revenue increased by 18% year over year to $113.8 billion , and net income increased to 30%. Q4 2025 Earnings For some reason, there's a narrative that AI will hurt the search business. It's not right, at least in this situation. Instead of shrinking the business, AI is driving search engine evolution. According to management, users are interacting with it differently; they ask more complicated questions and conduct longer conversations that involve follow-up questions after initial ones. All this can be attributed to AI usage; thus, it's not cannibalization but rather increased engagement of users. Moreover, these longer and more complicated questions were hard to monetize historically since it was hard to understand the exact intent of the user. Now AI can help with that and allow matching queries to ads, hence boosting monetization efficiency. In other words, AI can drive growth by increasing both the volume of queries and their monetization efficiency. It's hard not to like such a perspective. Cloud Is No Longer Optional, It's Core Search is evolving fast, and Cloud continues to drive the same trend. For instance, in Q4 its revenue rose by 48%, reaching almost $17.7 billion, and its backlog increas...

Milan Markovic/iStock via Getty Images During spring break this year, our family spent several days in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. What struck me most about the place was how thoughtfully it blends the old and the new. Ancient live oaks and preserved marshland with tons of alligators sit alongside newer homes, parks, and family activities. The most effective expressions on the island combine both. One afternoon, we walked through Night Heron Park, where a newly built deck winds around trees that have been standing for decades. The old and the new, woven together. The result is better than either would be alone. Stock market commentary often feels like a frantic search for the new — the next technology, the next geopolitical conflict, the next industry shift, the next market narrative. Yet many of the principles that drive long-term investment success have remained remarkably stable. Jeff Bezos famously remarked that he is more interested in thinking about what will not change over the next decade than what will. That framing feels particularly helpful today. At Right Tail, the foundation of our approach remains deep fundamental research, long-term ownership of high-quality businesses, and patience as compounding does its work. Durable competitive advantages, high returns on incremental invested capital, aligned management teams, and reasonable purchase prices continue to matter enormously. Time remains one of the most powerful forces in compounding. I continue to study industries and businesses, both ones we own and ones we could potentially own. While these principles remain constant, the tools available to investors are evolving rapidly. Artificial intelligence is improving how information is gathered, processed, and synthesized. I have been spending more time with these tools thoughtfully — not to replace fundamental analysis, but to make the research process more efficient. AI can help summarize large bodies of information, highlight inconsistencies across do...

Asian LNG prices are set to fall after the US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire that could temporarily reopen the Strait of Hormuz, bringing respite to global energy markets. US President Donald Trump agreed to suspend bombing for two weeks if Iran agreed to a complete and immediate opening to the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said that safe passage through the strait will be possible via coordination with the nation’s armed forces during this period, though details of the agreement have not been specified. A reopening of the key waterway — through which around one-fifth of the world’s oil and LNG transits — would help ease global LNG supply concerns. The strait has been mostly shut since the war broke out, sending multiple nations scrambling for alternatives as prices surge. Read More: US and Iran Agree to Ceasefire Hours Before Trump Deadline (1) No ship loaded with LNG has been recorded passing through the strait since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran at the end of last February. Attempts by loaded LNG carriers to exit the Persian Gulf via the waterway have been aborted, while one reportedly empty LNG carrier passed through the chokepoint over the weekend . Asian LNG prices more than doubled to $25/mmbtu in the week following Feb. 28. Prices have since pulled back slightly.

I’m Alex Gabriel Simon in Mumbai with the pre-open take on markets, which are showing signs of relief after the US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire. Asia’s stock benchmark jumped in early trading, oil plunged and the dollar weakened after the US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire. That suggests Indian equities are likely to extend their four-day winning streak and the rupee is in for some respite, and, hopefully, cooking gas supplies will ease as well. The currency has emerged as a key pressure point for India’s import-heavy economy since the Middle East war began and sent oil prices surging. Traders in Mumbai will be keenly watching how this easing of geopolitical tensions features in the central bank’s policy dynamics. With the Reserve Bank of India likely to hold interest rates today, the bigger focus is on what Governor Sanjay Malhotra says about the rupee as well as the inflation outlook. Markets Buzz: Three Questions on the Ceasefire What has happened? The US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire that’s expected to halt the American-Israeli military campaign in exchange for Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The deal buys time for the two sides to reach a longer agreement to end the war, which has killed thousands of people and sparked a global energy crisis. How have global markets reacted? MSCI’s Asia Pacific Index jumped 4.1% to a three-week high as traders bet lower oil prices will help contain inflation and rev...
