It’s still unclear what exactly is happening in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite the ceasefire announced last night , it doesn’t really look like many ships are getting through this crucial chokepoint. Despite this, oil prices have plunged since the highs notched yesterday, when Dated Brent (the main benchmark for physical oil) spiked to a record $144 a barrel . As of this afternoon, it’s hovering around $124. One notable thing about this current moment in markets is that we’re all getting a crash course in all the different flavors of oil (Not literally, of course. You should not drink the oil. You should not really be in any type of physical proximity to the crude oil ). There’s Brent (the North Sea blend that’s still the world’s dominant benchmark) and WTI (the light sweet crude priced in Oklahoma) and Dubai/Oman and Basrah Heavy and so on and so forth. With oil prices plunging Wednesday after the U.S. and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire that could allow oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, gas prices may start slowly coming down, analysts say. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were trading at about $95 mid-day Wednesday, down from nearly $113 a day earlier. Similarly, Brent crude futures tumbled to about $95 from $109 on Tuesday. "I expect some relief at the pump starting this weekend, and we might see a decline over the next couple of weeks of between 10 and 20 cents per gallon," said Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates in Houston. watch now VIDEO 4:09 04:09 Gasoline prices will reach comfortable levels for consumers through April, says API CEO Mike Sommers Squawk Box "Of course, that's all predicated on the ceasefire holding and we're not back at war with Iran in two weeks' time," Lipow said. $4.16 per gallon nationally Gas prices were at a national average of $4.16 on Wednesday, according to GasBuddy. Before the Feb. 28 start of the Iran conflict, that average was just under $3. But it's also been higher in recent years: the average reached $5.01 in June 2022 due to a supply disruption from Russia's invasion of Ukraine and increased demand. While the current ceasefire with Iran is not a plan for lasting peace, "the market is anticipating that the ceasefire is at least a start to get more oil to market," Lipow said. The Good Brigade/DigitalVision via Getty Images Hooker Furnishings Corporation ( HOFT ) has meaningfully dealt with the tariff issues that we foresaw in our previous coverage . Discontinuing certain businesses, they are more nearshored and have left some of their value categories where they now have more pricing power. Backlog is growing, margins are improving, restructuring will eventually move in the rearview, and new organic growth initiatives should be supporting the business with the launch of Margaritaville. Other tough comps for the hospitality business, which we understand to be a residual business after the intended disposal of Samuel Lawrence, are also moving into the rearview. The activists seem to be satisfied with all this . However, we do expect warehousing costs to now increase related to higher freight costs, and also the macro backdrop for key business drivers like real estate prices and homebuilding is going to be worse in coming quarters due to the reinflation theme in markets. Growing backlogs are good to see, but we aren't sold on the sales momentum being that great going forward and in the coming couple of quarters. Segment Data (10-Q) Volumes took a hit, but sales prices were ...
