China’s top military diplomat will skip Asia’s biggest defense forum for a second year in a row, ceding to the US and its allies an opportunity for public defense diplomacy. Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun won’t attend the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore this weekend. Instead, Beijing is sending a delegation of military experts and scholars led by Major General Meng Xiangqing, a professor at People’s Liberation Army National Defense University, according to the Defense Ministry’s spokesman. That’s a similar level to the one last year. Bloomberg earlier reported Dong’s expected absence from the event. The three-day Singapore summit is a rare chance for regional military officials to put unscripted questions directly to defense leaders in a public setting. Traditionally, the sitting Pentagon chief delivers a major policy address on Saturday morning, followed by the Chinese counterpart on Sunday. The last time that happened was in 2024, when Dong and then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also held a rare face-to-face meeting on the sidelines. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will attend this year’s forum fresh off a trip to China this month as part of President Donald Trump’s delegation. Military tensions between the two super powers have persisted over a range of issues, but Beijing has signaled it’s open to building trust with Washington. Meng attended the Shangri-La Dialogue last year, when Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro engaged in a testy back-and-forth with Chinese officials. Meng later told the Global Times news outlet that Teodoro’s remarks were unfounded attacks. Typically opened by China’s defense minister, that event hosts global military officials but is usually attended by only a lower-level US delegation.

(RTTNews) - European stocks edged lower on Thursday after the U.S. conducted fresh self-defense strikes in southern Iran and Tehran also targeted strikes on a U.S. air base, driving up global oil prices and reviving inflation concerns. The pan-European STOXX 600 fell 0.7 percent to 623.91 after ending marginally higher on Wednesday. The German DAX was marginally lower, France's CAC 40 slipped 0.4 percent and the U.K.'s FTSE 100 was down 0.9 percent. Airline stocks succumbed to selling pressure, with Air France KLM and Ryanair Holdings both falling around 2 percent, as Brent crude prices jumped nearly 3 percent to $97 a barrel on escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Johnson Matthey shares fell around 1 percent. The British specialty chemicals group has agreed to acquire U.S. emissions catalyst maker CORMETECH for an enterprise value of $360 million in cash. Energy firm SSE declined 2 percent after reporting a 5 percent fall in adjusted earnings per share for the year ended March 31, 2026. BT tumbled 3 percent after reports emerged that the British government would oppose any attempt from Sunil Bharti Mittal to raise his stake in the telecoms company beyond 25 percent. French drugmaker Sanofi lost 1.6 percent despite FDA grating priority review for venglustat to treat Gaucher disease. The US Justice Department is seeking the names, addresses, and banking information of Reddit and X users, ratcheting up efforts to identify social media critics of government deportation efforts. The US Attorney's Office for Washington, led by Jeanine Pirro , a close ally of President Donald Trump , has subpoenaed the social media companies as part of criminal investigations, asking for personal information on at least two anonymous posters behind accounts that have chided immigration enforcement efforts, according to records shared by attorneys for the users. The anonymous users, who learned of the subpoenas from the platforms and hired lawyers to challenge the government’s demands for information, haven’t been told what possible offenses are being probed. Their lawyers believe the investigations could relate to allegations of revealing a federal officer’s location data or other types of perceived threats, but dispute that their clients committed crimes. Even if no charges ultimately are filed, the attorneys contended in interviews that rooting out identities of dissenters is at the very least an intimidation tactic. In recent sealed court proceedings, a federal judge is weighing the posters’ requests to have the government’s subpoenas to the companies tossed out. Grand jury activity generally isn't open to the public but the recipients of these types of evidence-gathering tools are allowed to disclose certain information about them. The effort represents an escalation in the use of law enforcement tools by the administration, which has sought to protect the identities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Other initiatives have become a flashpoint in an ongoing battle over funding the Department of Homeland Security, which is ICE's parent agency, including allowing officers to wear masks while in public and trying to criminalize the recording and publishing of video of their operations. Civil liberties groups have been raising alarms about efforts by US o...

All signs point to SpaceX holding its initial public offering (IPO) sometime this summer, perhaps as early as next month. And retail investors are in luck. Most IPO stocks reserve just 5% to 10% of shares for smaller retail investors. According to reports, however, Elon Musk wants to reserve as much as 30% of SpaceX's stock offering for smaller investors. "Those are folks that have been incredibly supportive of us and of Elon for a long time, and we want to make sure that we recognize that," commented SpaceX's chief financial officer, Bret Johnsen. Investors may be able to gain limited exposure to this exciting space stock before its IPO, though the available options can involve added fees, restrictions, and reduced liquidity. Whether you buy shares now or later, how much growth potential could there really be for a business seeking to value itself at $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion? It depends on what you think the future will look like. But there's one reason in particular to believe SpaceX shares can help your portfolio grow for decades to come. Why is SpaceX worth investing in despite a lofty valuation? Right now, many of Musk's businesses are valued mostly on future earnings potential, not present cash flows. Tesla (TSLA +1.56%), for example, has a $1.3 trillion valuation despite falling auto sales over the last few years. That's because investors are more excited about the company's potential for robotaxi than its historical auto manufacturing business. A similar situation is taking place with SpaceX stock right now. Data revealed in the company's public prospectus filed this month highlighted how much SpaceX's valuation hinges on investors' belief that the best is yet to come. "The prospectus shows just how much the IPO depends on expectations for future growth and investor servility to Musk -- as opposed to the current underlying business," reports Axios. "Those expectations will be severely tested if SpaceX really wants to be valued at $1.75 trillion -- which...

Warren Buffett is known for stock picking, selecting excellent long-term companies trading at reasonable or even dirt cheap prices and holding on for the long term. Using this strategy, he's helped Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio to achieve a compounded annual gain of almost 20% over the past 58 years. This is compared to the compounded annual increase of 10% for the S&P 500 index. But Buffett also is a strong believer in another investing move that's a lot easier than stock picking -- it doesn't require research, specific knowledge of a particular company or industry, and it's proven itself to be a winner over time. In fact, Buffett owns this type of asset himself, an investment that complements his hand-picked stocks portfolio, and he's suggested that it's the ideal investment for a non-professional investor. If we use history as a guide, this asset could turn $300 per month into $1 million. Let's find out more. Betting on stock market leaders So, what is this Buffett approved strategy? It's the investment in an S&P 500 Index fund, a move that allows you to bet on all of the companies currently fueling the U.S. economy. Buffett holds the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEMKT: SPY) as well as the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF in his portfolio -- both make great investments, but we'll use the SPDR fund as an example here. These funds include the same companies found in the S&P 500 at the same weighting, and as a result, they track the performance of the index. Since the goal of the index is to measure the performance of major leaders of the times, stocks included are reviewed on a quarterly basis -- during those reviews, additions and deletions are announced. For example, this year the index invited high-growth technology companies Palantir Technologies and Super Micro Computer to join. This means when you're invested in the S&P 500 through an index fund, you're always invested in the day's most prominent players -- and in fields that are making the biggest gains. For example, tech...

A Hong Kong court on Thursday jailed a former university professor for 20 weeks after he accepted a HK$40,000 (US$5,109) bribe and offered red packets to two colleagues to help an unqualified student gain admission to a postgraduate programme, saying his actions had tarnished the city’s reputation. Liu Hongbin was sentenced for abusing his authority as chair professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s department of ocean science to help a mainland Chinese student majoring in automotive service engineering secure a conditional offer for a master’s degree in environmental health and safety between March and May 2025. The 63-year-old defendant pleaded guilty at Kwun Tong Court earlier this month to one count of conspiracy for a public servant to accept an advantage and two counts of offering an advantage to a public servant. Advertisement Defence counsel Dick Wong Chun-man on Thursday urged the court to suspend his client’s jail term, highlighting positive comments made by the defendant’s wife, colleagues, students and friends, who described Liu as a selfless and upright marine biologist who had devoted his life to research, teaching and public service. Wong said the case had a devastating impact on Liu’s career: the research team he had worked with for decades had been dismissed, and his HK$31 million research project into ways to mitigate climate change through coastal management had collapsed. Advertisement The lawyer also said that Liu, who had spent 15 days in custody before sentencing, was willing to cooperate with the Independent Commission Against Corruption to use his case as educational material for other mainland immigrants in the future.

AT&T (NYSE: T ) has underperformed the market by almost 30% over the last month and a half, since our last article recommending investing, as tech has regained favor instead . Despite that weakness, the company is back up to an almost 4.5% dividend, has announced new ventures to compete with satellite internet, and is well on its way to growing and providing future returns. AT&T - T-Mobile - Verizon JV vs. Satellite Among the most exciting recent news to come out of AT&T recently, for those concerned about the impact of growing competition from satellite-based services, is a joint venture with T-Mobile and Verizon focused on ending dead spots in the United States. The joint venture covers using direct-to-device satellite technology to end customer dead spots with terrestrial spectrum sharing. We think reducing this gap will substantially reduce the appeal of shifting to a satellite-based solution that is worse in 5G coverage areas and enable cellular as a network form to retain its dominance. The joint efforts of the 3 companies will make this a solvable problem. AT&T 1Q 2026 Results AT&T has impressive results in the quarter, with almost $32 billion in revenue turned into $2.5 billion of FCF at the high end of guidance. AT&T Investor Presentation We’ll discuss the results in more detail below, but a 37.4% adjusted EBITDA margin led to 2.3% YoY EBITDA growth, in line with inflation. However, the trickle to the bottom line was strong, with $0.57 in adjusted EPS, up 11.8% YoY. At the same time, the company’s internet portfolio is very exciting, with 37M+ fiber locations and a 42% convergence rate with cellular and home internet customers. Not only is fiber a sticky business that AT&T is building up an impressive portfolio in, but the convergence with fiber and cellular helps it benefit across both business lines. AT&T Advanced Connectivity AT&T’s improved connectivity business is one of its most exciting and a strong bolt-on to its existing expertise. AT&T Investor Pr...
