The U.S. stock market is red hot despite economic uncertainty created by tariffs and the Iran war. In the past year, the S&P 500 (^GSPC +0.58%) has advanced 30% and the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC +0.91%) has added 42%. But investors have reason to be nervous. Kevin Warsh recently replaced Jerome Powell as Federal Reserve chair. Trump appointed Warsh, who has experience setting monetary policy in difficult economic climates -- he previously served on the Fed Board of Governors during the Great Recession -- but he finds himself in a particularly tough spot this time around. Trump has frequently chided the Fed for keeping its benchmark interest rate too high, so it stands to reason that he views Warsh as a solution. But Trump's attempts to influence the Fed's monetary policy, coupled with his decision to wage war in Iran, have made rate cuts essentially impossible. In fact, elevated energy prices could force the Warsh-led Fed to raise rates, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite have historically declined when the central bank has started a new rate-increase cycle. The Federal Reserve may have to raise interest rates The Iran conflict has closed the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that serves as a transit route for about 20 million barrels of oil per day, or about 20% of global consumption. Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation increased to 3.8% in April, the highest level in three years. But that situation is still getting worse. The collaboration is intended to give EQT-backed firms greater access to Google Cloud’s AI technology stack, expertise, and related services. Under the terms of the partnership, EQT’s portfolio companies will be able to utilise Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and a selection of Gemini AI models. The agreement also covers cybersecurity services provided by Mandiant and Wiz, as well as sovereign cloud and AI offerings to support data residency and governance requirements. EQT portfolio companies will also have early access to select forthcoming Google Cloud AI products, enabling more rapid prototyping and testing. Engineers from Google will work directly with EQT’s own AI transformation team to facilitate the implementation of these technologies across the group’s businesses. The support extends to Google Cloud’s partner ecosystem. Here at the Lab, we believe the magnitude of the sell-off may have become disconnected from underlying fundamentals. The AI role within the sector emerged as one of the most debated topics and centered around three key areas: 1) whether AI could weaken the traditional intermediary role played by classifieds platforms; 2) whether these businesses may need to increase CAPEX investment to remain competitive materially; and 3) whether AI platforms could eventually pressure traffic economics and long-term profitability. This negative trend has also pressured travel companies such as Expedia , and, in this case, with OpenAI now testing ads in ChatGPT, we believe these concerns are overblown. With this spirit, today, we are initiating coverage of Rightmove ( RTMVF ), the leading residential property portal in the UK. The company's business model is straightforward: real estate agents pay a monthly subscription to advertise an unlimited number of properties on the Rightmove website.
