China has condemned the launch of maritime boundary negotiations between Japan and the Philippines , calling the talks “completely illegal and void”. The protest followed a joint statement released on Thursday after a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr in Tokyo. During the talks, the two sides agreed to elevate bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership to strengthen cooperation in areas including the economy, security and intelligence sharing. Advertisement Japan and the Philippines do not share maritime borders, but their seabed claims could overlap as both look to extend their legal continental shelves beyond 200 nautical miles (370km or 230 miles). Tokyo claims Okinotori, in the southernmost part of Japan, as an island that entitles it to an exclusive economic zone. But other governments in the region, including Beijing and Seoul, insist that the atoll does not meet the definition of an island under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos) Advertisement Speaking at a daily press conference on Friday, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said the area covered by the Japan-Philippines maritime border talks sat directly east of Taiwan, where Beijing maintained its own exclusive economic zone and continental shelf rights under both domestic and international law.

The creator of It’s a Sin is back – and he’s furious. His new series Tip Top explores the rise of homophobia through a feud between two Manchester neighbours. He and stars Alan Cumming and David Morrissey talk death, fear and ‘joy as a form of protest’ Late at night on Manchester’s Canal Street, the heart of the city’s famous queer scene, two neighbours are at war. An escalating feud between gay bar manager Leo (Alan Cumming) and reserved, judgmental neighbour Clive (David Morrissey) shows no sign of abating. Yells from Leo are so loud they echo down the canal. The street is not closed to the public as their altercation plays out, so you can’t tell who in the background is an employee at Leo’s bar, Spit & Polish, who is a regular, and who is a member of the public out for their midweek pint. In the background, an ambulance’s lights flash while unflappable drag queens continue to flyer for their neighbouring bars. Russell T Davies’s Tip Toe, a new Channel 4 drama, looks at how political rhetoric, toxic online bullying and misinformation can add jet fuel to a feud between neighbours. The location of the series won’t be lost on viewers of Queer As Folk. The 1999 classic, which regularly featured scenes shot in Canal Street, followed the lives of three gay men, in a way that not only made being gay seem cool, it also reflected a new era of tolerance. Viewers took from it that the future could only be bright. Continue reading...

Photographer: Samyukta Lakshmi/Bloomberg via Getty Images Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Anthropic is zeroing in on a $1trillion valuation after another successful funding round — but investor demand for AI companies is just getting started, according to Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives. Ives told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Friday that "for the first time in 30 years, the U.S. is ahead of China" on technology. He said that Anthropic's latest valuation of $965 billion after securing $65bn in funding on Thursday is "just the tip of the sphere," and investors should turn their attention to data layer companies, such as Snowflake , Datadog and InnoData . Ives is forecasting a "historic" period in the history of Wall Street ahead of a raft of mega-IPOs on the docket for 2026, including the potential flotations of SpaceX, Anthropic and Open AI. "They're really the three pillars of the fourth industrial revolution," he said. "Right now, in terms of Anthropic, it's the best model in the world, and I don't think there's a dispute there. "It's going to put more pressure on Open AI, which is foundational to the AI revolution." Other analysts have warned that this seismic set of public offerings could signal the top of the market, and drew parallels with the late-1990s dot-com bubble. Welcome to our guide to the commodities driving the global economy. Today, reporters Kevin Crowley and David Wethe look at an unexpected result in the race for a seat on the Texas oil regulator. Companies working in the biggest US oil field were on edge this week after a little-known hard-right candidate prevailed in a primary election for a seat on the influential Texas energy regulatory commission. At a time when the shale industry is facing hefty regulatory challenges including orphan wells, wastewater disposal and gas flaring, the fact that the winner barely mentioned energy during his campaign has sown unease. Bo French, a self-described “MAGA conservative” who vowed to protect the state’s oil sector from “militant Islamists,” beat the incumbent candidate Jim Wright with 50.6% of the vote in Tuesday’s Republican run-off. It puts French in prime position to win a spot on the three-seat commission in November’s general election. The outcome was a surprise to the industry. French, a former county Republican chairman, was not a particularly prominent figure in Texas political or energy circles before running. He focused his campaign on opposing diversity, equity and inclusion programs, supporting Israel and fighting what he termed the “Islamification of Texas.” None of those are issues the state’s oil and natural gas regulator, named the Railroad Commission of Texas, has much jurisdiction over. The defeated candidate was strongly supported by the oil industry. Wright’s campaign donor list reads like a who’s who of the Permian Basin: Occidental Petroleum Corp. Chief Executive Officer Vicki Hollub , pipeline billionaire Kelcy Warren as well as the political action committees of Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp. and ConocoPhillips. He also had endorsements from the Texas Oil and Gas Association, Governor Greg Abbott and more than two dozen GOP state representatives. French does have at least one powerful backer in the oil patch: Tim Dunn, a billionaire Christian preach...

Key Points Nu ended the first quarter with 135 million active customers, up 13% year over year. The company’s unit economics are stellar, supporting a 16% net profit margin. It's important for investors to keep tabs on user growth and monetization trends. 10 stocks we like better than Nu Holdings › Investors might think that the world of financial services is generally a boring area to park capital for growth. But Nu Holdings (NYSE: NU) proves that this perspective is wrong. The Latin American fintech stock, which has climbed 93% in the past three years (as of May 27), has expanded rapidly. As of March 31, the online bank counted 135 million customers, up 71% from exactly three years ago. This figure is more than what most U.S. banks currently have. Will AI create the world's first trillionaire? Our team just released a report on the one little-known company, called an "Indispensable Monopoly" providing the critical technology Nvidia and Intel both need. Continue » What matters most, though, is not necessarily the total customer count. Investors should care what Nu earns from each one. A look at the unit economics Absolute growth metrics get a lot of attention. Monetization is crucial as well. During the first quarter of 2026, Nu reported average revenue per active customer (ARPAC) of $15.90. This number has steadily risen, and it's up 23% year over year on a currency-neutral basis. On the other side of the equation, it cost Nu just $1 to serve each of these customers in the first quarter. That's a wide gap when compared to its ARPAC. And it certainly helps to explain why the company was able to post a 16.4% net profit margin in the latest quarter. This was also supported by credit quality that remains within historical levels. Nu's biggest market, without a doubt, is Brazil, where 83% of its customers are active on a monthly basis. The fintech is still in the early innings in Mexico, but success is notable. On the first-quarterearnings call CEO David Velez said: "I...

Danish pension fund AkademikerPension has decided to add SpaceX to an exclusion list, citing concerns about the company’s governance. The decision, shared in an email with Bloomberg on Friday, comes as SpaceX targets a valuation of at least $1.8 trillion in its initial public offering. The company is seeking to raise as much as $75 billion, people familiar with the matter have said, which would make it the biggest IPO of all time. AkademikerPension, which oversees about $25 billion and has previously excluded Tesla Inc. and US Treasuries out of sustainability concerns, said its “primary reason” for avoiding SpaceX is ESG-related, “particularly the company’s exceptionally poor performance on governance matters.” “That said, we would not be able to justify this decision from an investment-return perspective if our assessment were that SpaceX represented an attractive investment opportunity,” the pension fund said. “However, as long-term investors, our view is that the company is also grossly overvalued.” SpaceX Said to Cut IPO Valuation Goal to at Least $1.8 Trillion How SpaceX’s Dream of a Record-Breaking IPO Stacks Up

Hong Kong’s health minister has said the government will not lose out if the medical centre of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) repays its public loan early, rejecting calls for a penalty. Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau’s comments came at a Legislative Council health services panel meeting on Friday, when CUHK Medical Centre CEO Chung Kin-lai also revealed that the hospital’s financial situation had improved. Lo was responding to criticism from lawmaker Kitson Yang Wing-kit, who argued that the hospital was taking advantage of the government and the legislature after previously seeking repayment extensions during difficult times. Advertisement “During the most difficult times, you came to the Legislative Council to request an extension, and we approved it,” Yang said. “Now that you are making a profit, you say the government’s interest is too high and you look elsewhere for cheaper interest by 1 or 1.5 percentage points. You are taking advantage of the government and Legislative Council, aren’t you?” Lawmaker Kitson Yang accuses CUHK Medical Centre of taking advantage of the government and Legislative Council. Photo: Karma Lo The medical centre was granted a HK$4.033 billion (US$514.76 million) government loan in 2015, and repayment was deferred from 2023 to 2028 after the institution struggled during the Covid pandemic, according to Legco documents.
