Chevron (NYSE: CVX) reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.41 per share. That figure is materially lower than the $2.18 it earned in the year-ago period, which sounds really bad. Especially when you see that the company's realized oil price rose just over 6.5% year over year. There's a lot going on under the covers here, and much of it is positive. Chevron is one of the world's largest energy companies . It has operations around the world, produces oil and natural gas, and operates across the entire energy value chain, from the upstream (energy production) to the midstream (pipelines) to the downstream (chemicals and refining). It is a very complex business, and one important piece is hedging. But hedging activities don't always align well with quarterly earnings. In the first quarter, Chevron's earnings were unfavorably impacted by its hedging efforts to the tune of $2.9 billion. There are many option ETFs for investors to choose from, but they tend to focus on one specific index. GIAX takes a unique approach by expanding its option writing strategy on a global basis and holding several high quality ETFs. As always, there are some tradeoffs for investors to consider, so the utility with GIAX can vary based on your specific circumstance and investing goals. Looking at the performance over the last twelve months, we can see that GIAX's share price has increased by about 3.8%. The fund has demonstrated that it is capable of partially participating in the upside momentum of the market. When including all distributions that were paid out to shareholders, the total return jumps up to 32.1% over the same time frame. The main appeal of GIAX is the starting dividend yield of 24% and how the fund issues those payouts on a weekly basis. The income has remained quite steady for the fund, despite markets experiencing an elevated level of volatility. Data by YCharts While I do like the structure of GIAX's portfolio strategy and approach, I don't think this is the best time to accumulate shares. Despite its strengths, the fund is still prone to NAV erosion over time. Unfortunately, downside risks are sort of an inevitability for this fund because of its limitations of capturing upside growth. Therefore, even though market indices continue to achieve new all-time highs, I think it makes the most sense to only accumulate shares of GIAX when market indices are trending downward or flat. While upside growth is possible, GIAX is reliant on a consistent upside trend, which may not be realistic through certain market conditions.
