The effort has taken on greater urgency as turmoil in the Middle East has...

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. ’s cloud division led a 2 billion yuan ($293 million) funding round for ShengShu Technology , bolstering the war chest of a young contender in China’s crowded AI video contest. The Beijing-based startup also drew backing from Baidu Ventures and Luminous Ventures, it said in a statement without disclosing its valuation. The capital injection comes just two months after the maker of the Vidu video generator raised 600 million yuan. Vidu is in a capital-intensive race to develop video generation tools that’s pulled in tech heavyweights like ByteDance Ltd. , Alibaba and Kuaishou Technology , as well as upstarts like PixVerse , which is also backed by Alibaba. They aim to fill the gap left after OpenAI shuttered its Sora project to focus on core GPT models. Earlier in the week, the release of a new video generator dubbed Happy Horse — whose developer has not yet been revealed — triggered an investment flurry in Chinese AI stocks after speculation that its author was a local company. The new AI tool outperformed ByteDance’s Seedance 2 as the best text-to-video service on the Artificial Analysis chart . Vidu ranks ninth on that list. Founded in March 2023, ShengShu was started by Tsinghua University professor Zhu Jun, who serves as its chief scientist. Its early backers include Qiming Venture Partners , Baidu Inc. and a Beijing government fund. In 2025, the company reported more than tenfold growth in both users and revenue, without disclosing specific figures. Vidu has reached users in over 200 countries and regions worldwide, spanning industries such as animation, advertising and film. In December, ShengShu open-sourced Motus — a new AI...

The war launched by the U.S. and Israel against Iran has spread across the Middle East, threatening to plunge the global economy into chaos, with Lebanon and Gulf energy exporters dragged into the conflict. - | Afp | Getty Images Asia-Pacific markets were set to open mixed Friday, as tensions in the Middle East continue to test a fragile two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. The Iran conflict, which has been going on for more than a month, led to the closure of the crucial energy waterway, Strait of Hormuz. Tehran agreed to reopen the strait for the next two weeks as long as all attacks on the country were halted, according to a statement from its foreign minister. Media reports said that Israel had also agreed to the ceasefire. That followed U.S. President Donald Trump agreeing to pause attacks on Iran. The West Texas Intermediate was up 0.62% at $98.48 per barrel as of 7.50 p.m. ET. Brent crude ended the Thursday session at $95.92 per barrel, up over 1%. WTI had crossed $100 per barrel earlier in the session, as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained minimal despite the ceasefire agreement with U.S. Japan's Nikkei 225 is set to fall with the Chicago contract at 56,545 and its Osaka counterpart last trading at 56,700, compared to the index's previous close of 55,895.32 Hong Kong Hang Seng index futures were last at 25,900, compared with the index's Thursday close of 25,752.40. janiecbros/E+ via Getty Images janiecbros/E+ via Getty Images There are potential tailwinds in cannabis. How can investor bet on that and be diversified? Usually this means finding the right ETF. A popular one is AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF ( MSOS ). Folks can also try the REIT angle with NewLake Capital Partners, Inc. ( NLCP ). I'll compare the two and explain why I think a REIT's the right way to go. Recent struggles in cannabis Cannabis companies didn't start out having it easy. Cannabis remains illegal at the federal level. This limits their ability to do interstate operations or to raise capital. That's why their stocks trade OTC. Companies were growing for a good while, and a lot of them took on debt to do it. Trouble came when growth slowed down in 2025 . State markets matured. They became oversupplied . Oversupply meant price competition and bad margins for the companies. Flat growth and worse margins hurt them badly, and it was worse when debt they took on started coming due . So now cannabis stocks could either stop growing or go bankrupt! NLCP & MSOS 3Y Price Returns (Seeking Alpha) I wanted to compare the impacts on MSOS and NLCP. From the looks of it, MSOS suffered much more for it. It's down about 30% for the last three years, while NLCP is up about 10%. In fact, NLCP showed a lot of defensiveness. I think this gives us some clues about which is better. That's if we think cannabis can bounce back. How They Invest in Cannabis MSOS is an ETF, so naturally they invest in stocks of cannabis companies. That's how investors get diversified exposure. MSOS mainly does this with swaps instead of direct stock ownership. MSOS Holdings (MSOS Official Web Page) Nearly all of the portfolio is exposed to just the top 10 stocks. I like two of them. I rated Trulievve Cannabis Corp. ( TCNNF ) a Buy, and I rated Green Thumb Industries, Inc. ( GTBIF ) a Buy. They had better margins and an easier time paying their debt, so they stood out. Otherwise, MSOS is exposed ...

Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. is now the world’s best-performing electric-vehicle stock, following a torrid rally fueled by optimism about the reinvention of a combustion engine-era brand. The Chinese automaker’s Hong Kong-listed shares have surged more than 50% since the Iran war began, to their highest in over four years and topping an 81-member global gauge tracking EV-linked firms. Arch-rival BYD Co.’s shares have risen around 7% in the same period, when the oil shock has helped drive an EV sales boom. The rally has come on the back of Geely’s strong sales momentum and record earnings, positioning itself as a serious challenger to BYD, China’s top EV manufacturer. The rapid ascent of the Hangzhou-based firm underscores the fast-changing landscape in the world’s largest auto market, where overcapacity and waning demand have led to cut-throat competition and a dizzying pace of innovation. With Geely now targeting EV-led global expansion, some investors say there’s room for the stock to carry a higher valuation premium, particularly if the company can attract international funds that have long overlooked legacy car-makers. “While BYD leads on scale, Geely competes through wider brand segmentation and greater flexibility across technologies and price points,” said Gary Tan , a fund manager at Allspring Global Investments. “Its global footprint and early experience integrating foreign brands support export growth, even as BYD maintains volume leadership.” Parent of Sweden’s Volvo Car AB, Geely is part of the auto empire founded by Chinese tycoon Li Shufu in 1986, which started by making refrigerator parts and motorcycles. For years, its shares had struggled to win investor interest, weighed down by heavy reliance on combustion models and concerns about corporate governance. BYD became China’s top selling automaker in 2023, propelled by its large lineup of EVs and hybrid cars. Geely was initially slow to match BYD’s offerings but has since launched a major overhaul t...
