From the start, feminists have fought for spaces that are less visible but which have special status: prisons, refuges, rape crisis centres, lesbian groups, women’s health centres and sports Susanna Rustin is the author of Sexed: A History of British Feminism Thirteen months after the UK supreme court delivered its landmark ruling that sex in the Equality Act refers to biological sex , and 10 days after an updated draft “code of practice” from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) was laid before parliament, the UK is once again rowing about single-sex spaces , and particularly toilets. Once again, the purpose and value of those spaces for women are at risk of being eclipsed by complaints from people who would prefer that they didn’t exist in a way that complies with the current law. The code confirms that there is no legal way to open a single-sex service to people of the other sex, even if they are trans. Organisations are told to address the likely disadvantage to trans people by offering alternative, mixed-sex facilities. Associations (membership organisations with rules) can be trans-inclusive if they want, as long as they do not claim to be single-sex. Bridget Phillipson, the women and equalities minister, said that avoiding any new “burden on business” was one of the reasons why the revised guidance has taken more than a year to arrive. The angry reaction from trans rights groups was expected. “Bathroom bans”, in the US phrase, are a totemic issue. Public toilets are the only single-sex space that most of us encounter on a daily basis. Trans campaigners see the guidance as a mandate to exclude them from ordinary life. But for entry to single-sex spaces, the criteria must be sex, and the code is clear that any checks – for example, if a trans man were to be mistaken for a biological man in a women’s health setting – must be made “sensitively” to avoid discrimination or harassment. Susanna Rustin is a social affairs journalist and the author of Sexed:...

Workers who voted for Trump and Republicans in recent elections are now being hit with offshoring and the impacts of tariffs – but can Democrats sway them? Brenda Davis, a retiree who worked at Ford in Ohio for more than 20 years, was dismayed to learn that a new Buick she bought from General Motors was manufactured entirely in China . Foreign vehicles are strongly discouraged from parking lots at autoworkers’ facilities, as they serve as a reminder of the ongoing threat outsourcing poses to their livelihoods. Morgan Hughes, who currently works at the General Motors assembly plant in Springfield, Ohio, is worried about the impact tariffs have had on her plant’s dwindling workload and its recent sale to a different owner, as concerns over a plant closure have loomed over the factory for years. Matthias Balk | Picture Alliance | Getty Images Five years ago, venture capitalists were pouring money into American startups selling everything from lingerie subscriptions to scheduling software, anointing them with billion-dollar valuations before most even turned a profit. It was a frothy era for startups, fueled by a combination of cheap money and pandemic-boosted demand. But even after the Federal Reserve took some froth off by starting to raise interest rates in 2022, many founders believed that they could grow into their inflated valuations, investors told CNBC. Then, an app called ChatGPT arrived. "The ChatGPT moment was when people said, 'Holy smokes, the next generation of entrepreneurs, their coding language is spoken English,'" said Samir Kaul, a partner at the venture firm Khosla Ventures, an early backer of OpenAI . "Now you're seeing 50 engineers do what it would've taken 500 engineers to do five years ago," Kaul said. "We had to completely reshuffle how we valued these companies." While the shares of public software companies like Salesforce , ServiceNow and Workday got hammered this year because of the threat from artificial intelligence, a quieter reckoning has been unfolding in the private markets. The AI boom that funneled more than $250 billion into OpenAI and Anthropic ahead of their expected mega-IPOs this year has left hundreds of startups built before ChatGPT's arrival in 2022 stranded — effectively cut off from venture funding because of their inflated valuations and outdated technology, yet not profitable enough for the public markets. There are 857 U.S. startups valued at $1 billion or more, the threshold for being deemed a "unicorn" company, according to PitchBook data. But nearly half of that group hasn't raised fresh funding in the last three years, making those valuations stale, according to the private markets data firm. Startups that last raised in 2021 are now worth 68% less on average, while those that last raised in 2022 saw a 52...

In mid-May, OpenAI announced that an internal AI model had disproved the Erdős unit distance conjecture, a famous problem in discrete geometry that had stumped human mathematicians for the last 80 years. OpenAI gave several mathematicians early access to the result and published their reactions . Tim Gowers —who won the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in mathematics—wrote that “there is no doubt that the solution to the unit-distance problem is a milestone in AI mathematics.” University of Toronto professor Daniel Litt wrote that “this is the first example of a result produced autonomously by an AI that I find exciting in itself, as opposed to as a leading indicator.” Read full article Comments

Welcome to the Mideast Money newsletter, I’m Adveith Nair . Join us each week as my team and I chronicle the intersection of money and power in a region that’s become one of the most influential in global finance. You can sign up here . This week: Billionaire Alabbar and the UAE’s biggest listed firm are eyeing a troubled conglomerate , Abu Dhabi wealth funds are raising billions through a share sale spree, and a Hong Kong-traded firm is exploring a Gulf listing . But first , wealth funds are taking a harder line to protect their investments. The Qatari wealth fund’s ongoing pursuit of Indian entrepreneur Byju Raveendran , who was last week sentenced to six months in jail by a Singapore court, is the latest example of Middle Eastern sovereign investors moving aggressively to safeguard their capital. Raveendran founded educational technology firm Think & Learn — better known as Byju’s — which attracted capital from global firms including the Qatar Investment Authority and was among India’s highest-profile tech startups before a post-Covid slump pummeled the business. The once high-flying entrepreneur is facing claims from foreign investors around the world, including in the US where lenders are fighting to claw back losses from a $1.2 billion loan that soured. Following the Singapore court order, a QIA spokesperson said the fund will continue pursuing repayment of the debts owed to it, adding that no settlement appears achievable . Those comments are a stark reflection of how the custodians of Gulf petrodollars are adopting a more assertive approach to investments around the world. In the US, Energy & Minerals Group had already lined up investors for a continuation fund of at least $800 million when Abu Dhabi Investment Council sued over the maneuver and halted the process . The fund ultimately lost and the transaction proceeded , though the lawsuit was seen as a rare public rebuke of a partner it’s backed for years. ADIC is a unit of Mubadala Investment, a wealth fu...
