The U.S. dollar rose on Monday after talks between Washington and Tehran over the weekend failed to yield an agreement to end the war. The greenback rose 0.3% against the Euro to $1.169 and 0.25% against sterling to $1.342 after peace talks broke down and President Trump said the U.S. military would begin a blockade of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports. While investors haven't piled into the dollar since the start of the Iran conflict, the currency was up by around 2% against a basket of major peers in March. Three developments – higher oil prices, a stronger dollar, and stricter US financial conditions – have been headwinds for other currencies. Analysts at HSBC wrote in a note on Friday that "embracing a stronger USD into our forecasts is tempting", but were "reluctant" to do so and expect the greenback to soften instead — for two key reasons. First, quoting Fed chair Jerome Powell's recent speech, HSBC wrote: "When there is a lack of visibility, it is prudent to slow down rather than fully change direction." "Second, since the Fed is not in a hiking cycle nor has turned outright hawkish, there are underlying constraints working against the broad USD," the analysts added. The U.S. dollar's strength against other currencies seen during the war is largely attributed to the country's self-sufficiency in energy production. The U.K. and Eurozone economies are particularly sensitive to higher oil and gas prices, owing to the bloc's significant reliance on imports. Meanwhile, other traditional havens such as gold have held up less well, falling around 10% from all-time highs since the U.S. and Israel began striking Iran on February 28. HSBC analysts believe the yellow metal's bull run will return, but only when hostilities cease, the Strait of Hormuz reopens fully, and oil prices come down to a more reasonable and consistent level.

FlashMovie/iStock via Getty Images I understand why Corning ( GLW ) management talks so much about its Springboard initiative. This multi-year program, launched in early 2024, aims to focus investors (and, perhaps, employees) on the extent to which the company is growing business. Toward that end, management has been disclosing revenue targets, and periodically revising them upward. To be honest, and with all due respect for what management is trying to convey, presentations like that put me to sleep. All, or at least many, companies articulate plans like that — “XYZ company plans to grow — More at 6 o’clock!” A journalist would call that a dog-bite-man non-news story. I prefer to look for the proverbial man-bites-dog bona fide news stories. In the context of growth plans, this would discuss how growth efforts actually fared. And more importantly, it would discuss what’s driving growth. Numbers are a starting point. For GLW, their messages are ok. But I already get that from some parts of the growth-rate tables I’ll show below. And the upward trending Seeking Alpha Annual and Quarterly Estimates Revisions presentations say much. Based on those sources, I’m willing to accept that GLW is achieving at least as much as Springboard aims to deliver. But those numbers live in the past. And they only tell us “What?” If I were to stop here, I’d say GLW shares are overvalued. And at best, I’d rate the stock as a “Hold.” But drilling down into GLW’s business paints a different — and much more exciting — picture. It answers the “Why?” questions. And in my opinion, those answers justify enough optimism about GLW’s future to easily support a “Buy” rating. So let’s get to it. Setting The Stage GLW, founded in 1851 , is ancient relative to other tech and AI plays (which is what it is). Actually, it’s ancient relative to most of the companies in which many of us invest today. And through it all, it’s been a glassmaker. When GLW launched, glass was typically crafted in workshops. Getty Images European aerospace and defense stocks saw substantial declines in their share prices earlier this month on Ukraine peace hopes and higher costs for production and expansion. While there indeed may be progress on Ukraine peace talks and higher costs, I also believe that in a prudent setting any progress on peace talks in Ukraine does not substantially alter the European defense strategies amid increased tensions with the US. With or without peace in Ukraine, Europe needs to get its defense capabilities in place. So, I believe that growth for European defense contractors should not evaporate, and one company that may ultimately have a pivotal position that is rarely recognized is Avio SpA ( AVVSY ). Avio Has A Critical Positioning In Space And Missile Capabilities Avio was bought in 2003 from Fiat as the company was struggling with the crisis in the automotive industry. A consortium of Carlyle Group and Finmeccanica bought the Fiat Avio and changed the name to Avio, which was sold in 2006 to a British fund. In 2012, the aeronautical division of Avio was sold to General Electric, which is now known as GE Aerospace. This positioned the company as a space-focused company. Avio was taken public in 2017, with Italian Leonardo ( FINMY ) becoming a shareholder of the company. Today Avio can be seen as a critical node in the European missile and defense capabilities, which may be an attractive position for the company to be in given Europe’s push for space and security autonomy . Avio’s product lineup can be grouped into five categories: Launch systems Vega launcher Vega-C (upgraded version of the Vega launcher) Vega E (simplified next generation launcher) Solid Rocket Motors P-80, which is a large solid booster. Zefiro 9/23/40, which are different-sized upper solid stages. P120C/P160C, built through a joint venture with Airbus, Avio, and Safran, used for the Vega and Ariane launcher. Upper stages AVUM and AVUM+, which provide orbital insertion Ariane 6 P120C/P16...
