SlavkoSereda/iStock via Getty Images Crude oil futures fell sharply Tuesday on signs the U.S. and Iran are seeking to arrange a second round of peace talks before an April 7 ceasefire expires next week. Iran may be under pressure to give talks another try, since its economy is virtually dependent upon oil revenues, and the U.S. Navy has started its blockade of Iranian ports, blocking ships from entering or exiting the Strait of Hormuz for the purpose of commerce with Iran. The U.S. military said no ships had passed through its blockade in the first 24 hours, and that six vessels had turned around when ordered to do so, after Iran had been exporting ~1.5M bbl/day of oil. U.S. Central Command, which oversees American military operations in the region, is using more than a dozen warships, over 100 fighter jets and surveillance aircraft, and more than 10K troops to enforce the blockade. While talk of a resumption in U.S.-Iran talks weighed on oil prices Tuesday, the move lower ignores the loss of physical barrels of oil that are not moving, PVM Oil Associates analyst Tamas Varga said. Attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East and Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz have led to the largest oil supply disruption in history , the International Energy Agency said in its monthly report, with 10.1M bbl/day lost in March. Tuesday's drop of as much as $10/bbl from the previous session's highs reflects "the possibility of renewed talks that could lead to a nuclear deal that would eventually spur a reopening of the strait," Ritterbusch analysts said in a note. "Even a glimmer of negotiating progress can easily spark a dramatic price decline." Also, the U.S. will not renew a 30-day waiver of sanctions on Iranian oil at sea that expires this week, and quietly let a similar waiver on sanctions on Russian oil expire over the weekend, Reuters reported. Front-month Nymex crude ( CL1:COM ) for May delivery plunged 7.9% to $91.28/bbl, its lowest settlement value...
