Shares rose 0.4% in premarket trading on Wednesday “Using TSMC's monthly numbers, TSMC exceeded our prior top-line estimate by about 2%,” analyst Matt Bryson wrote in a note to clients. “While exchange rates largely shifted in a favorable manner over the course of the quarter (Q/Q), the average exchange rate was largely in-line with TSMC's expectations. We would anticipate better conditions were primarily attributable to continued strength in AI demand, albeit we also believe Apple continues to track well.” A consensus of analysts expects Taiwan Semiconductor to earn $3.36 per share on $35.48B in revenue. Bryson, who has an Outperform rating and a NT$2,200 price target on Taiwan Semi shares, said guidance should be solid as well. He expects sequential growth in AI and data center sales, and any dip in consumer electronics is likely to be more than offset by high-performance computing. He also noted that Apple ( AAPL ) orders “appear to remain strong into the current quarter” and for the rest of the year. “As such, we believe our estimates are achievable/beatable, particularly with TSMC revenues coming off of a higher base,” Bryson added. vlastas/iStock via Getty Images The interest in nuclear energy is at an all-time high. In fact, this increased interest stems from the fact that it offers a clean, reliable, and renewable source of electricity. It's the kind of energy that will be needed to support the massive data centers of the future. As such, the stock prices of companies involved with nuclear are now higher than they've ever been before. Centrus Energy Corp. ( LEU ) is well-positioned to benefit from a shift in the direction of U.S. policy toward building an independent U.S. uranium supply chain. The macroeconomic environment surrounding LEU is extremely positive due to the fact that it receives full federal support and is one of the leading companies engaged in developing advanced forms of uranium. However, moving from estimates to cash flow reveals how brutal the marketplace can be. Stock prices currently price in a perfect expansion scenario; they do not account for logistics problems connected with the current state of industry capacity or the risks and enormous costs of execution that lie ahead for LEU. From Buy to Hold In many ways, there has been a seismic shift in the landscape around Centrus over the last year or so. That includes both very exciting strategic wins and equally disappointing operational disappointments. On the one hand, the company has successfully negotiated a gigantic nine hundred million dollar DOE contract to produce HALEU. In addition to this, the Company has established some of the most visionary partnerships imaginable. For example, since the end of January, the company's partnership with Palantir Technologies has already identified almost three hundred million dollars in potential industrial cost savings and supply chain efficiency. Also, there are some very preliminary discussions about entering into a joint venture agreement with Oklo ( OKLO ). Overall, all good news on paper. On the other hand, the current short-term number performance and competitive environm...

Abu Dhabi’s state oil company, which recently closed a three-way merger to create a $60 billion petrochemical behemoth , said it’s confident about Europe’s economic prospects and remains open to new deals. “We’re not ruling out additional investments in Europe,” Rainer Seele , who’s responsible for the chemicals business at Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. ’s XRG unit, said at a Wednesday press briefing in Vienna. “We know a lot of investors right now are critical of Europe. But XRG is convinced it will have a good future. Europe long-term will play a leading role.” The company last month finalized a deal involving OMV AG and Nova Chemicals Corp . to create Borouge Group International, the world’s fourth-largest maker of polyolefins, a key ingredient in goods ranging from plastic bottles to automotive parts and medical devices. Backed by hundreds of billions of dollars of Abu Dhabi’s oil funds, XRG has been one of the biggest energy dealmakers in recent years, including a €12 billion acquisition of German chemical-maker Covestro AG. Read More: An $80 Billion UAE Firm Is Wooing Trump and Luring Wall Street The chemicals deals come as multiple energy shocks resulting from Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East have shaken European petrochemical manufacturers with higher gas prices narrowing profit margins and forcing production cuts. A downturn forced Borouge Group International to delay its planned share listing in Abu Dhabi until 2027. The current Middle East conflict and restriction of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is another complication for the new company. The deal to create Borouge Group International marked the ever closer between the UAE and Austria, both with similarly sized economies and populations. The UAE first acquired a stake in OMV in 1994 and currently holds 24.9% through Adnoc. In turn, OMV has invested in upstream gas and oil assets in Abu Dhabi while buying a 15% stake in the sprawling Ruwais refine...

CraigRJD/iStock via Getty Images The US dollar ( DXY ) is enjoying a firmer bias today. The Dollar Index is threatening to snap a seven-day decline. President Trump has held out the possibility that the “war is close to over.” Yet, the improved risk appetites in recent days reflect the market anticipating this. A new round of US-Iran negotiations could begin as early as tomorrow. Seeming unfazed by the US blockade preventing Iranian oil shipments that mostly go to China, the PBOC set the dollar’s reference rate at a new three-year low today. Yesterday, the same day that the Senate Banking Committee indicated a confirmation hearing for Fed chair nominee Kevin Warsh for April 21, leaving 25 days before Powell’s term expires, US prosecutors made an unannounced visit to the Federal Reserve’s offices in Washington. They lacked clearance protocols to enter the construction site. US Senator Tillis has reaffirmed his commitment to block the confirmation until the investigation is resolved. Prices G10 • The euro reached its best level since the Middle East war began. It poked slightly above $1.1810 as the European session drew to a close yesterday. The euro spent the North American afternoon consolidating and found support ahead of $1.1785. The euro is trading quietly with a heavier bias. It has approached $1.1770 in Europe. It seems like it is between two large option strikes: 2 bln euros at $1.1750 and 1.6 bln euros at $1.18, and both stacks expire today. • The dollar has recorded two lower highs since it peaked against the yen in late March near JPY160.45. It peaked last week a smidgeon above JPY160 and this week’s high was about JPY159.85. Yesterday’s retreat brought the greenback to JPY158.60, and in the consolidation in the North American afternoon, it could not reclaim the JPY159 handle. It barely traded above there today and held above JPY158.65. Still, a near-term low may be in place, and the US dollar can return to the JPY159.20-40 area. Nearly $1.5 bln in options ...

Photo: European Chamber China’s expanding export-control regime is becoming a growing source of concern for Europe, with an EU business association warning that Beijing’s latest restrictions on rare earths risk disrupting global supply chains and undermining the country’s standing as a reliable supplier. Beijing’s export controls, while still officially framed as tools to prevent the spread of dual-use goods, have increasingly been “repurposed as strategic trade measures,” mirroring a broader shift already seen in the U.S., according to a report released Tuesday by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC).

The UK tax office is urging a London court to reject Waldorf Production UK Plc ’s latest restructuring plan, arguing the proposal would wipe out the oil and gas company’s £69.8 million ($94.6 million) in unpaid windfall tax liabilities while preserving substantial benefits for its proposed buyer. His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs said in court filings that the plan should “not be sanctioned if it includes the extinguishment of the Company’s liability for Energy Profits Levy,” a tax imposed on North Sea oil and gas profits. HMRC says the deal would allow Harbour Energy Plc to acquire Waldorf while potentially allowing it to benefit from roughly $900 million of value from Waldorf companies’ tax losses. Lawyers for HMRC — an unsecured and involuntary creditor of Waldorf — argued the plan is designed to push through a commercial transaction in favor of a buyer that “comfortably has the liquidity and ability to pay the outstanding EPL liabilities.” The tax authority says it may seek to wind up Waldorf if the court refuses to sanction the plan and no acceptable agreement is reached. The case marks the latest development in Waldorf’s long-running restructuring efforts after a judge declined to approve an earlier debt plan last year. HMRC is the sole dissenting creditor in the current process and says the court should not allow restructuring law to be used to eliminate taxes mandated by Parliament. Under UK restructuring law, a judge can in some cases impose losses on a dissenting creditor through a cross-class cram down. Waldorf, for its part, says the plan is needed to complete Harbour’s proposed $205 million acquisition of most of the group and would leave creditors materially better off than a likely insolvency. The company told the court it is “common ground” that creditors would receive a “significantly higher return” under the plan than in the relevant alternative. HMRC’s lawyers, however, argue the tax office’s position is “different to that of all the commercial cred...

Morgan Stanley ’s stock traders joined the rest of Wall Street with a record-breaking first quarter. The firm took in $5.15 billion from equity trading in the first three months of the year, according to a statement Wednesday. The 25% jump came in ahead of expectations and boosted total trading revenue to $10.7 billion. Morgan Stanley’s closely watched wealth business pulled in $118.4 billion in net new assets, more than expected. The results on Wednesday, along with Bank of America Corp.’s, wrap up first-quarter earnings for the biggest US banks, after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. , JPMorgan Chase & Co. , Citigroup Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. reported earlier this week. Goldman, JPMorgan, Bank of America and Citigroup each notched record stock-trading revenue. Shares of Morgan Stanley, up 3.3% this year through Tuesday, rose 1.94% in early trading in New York. Investment-banking fees climbed 36% in the quarter to $2.12 billion. Dealmakers advising on mergers and acquisitions increased fees more than expected, while equity and debt underwriting both fell short of estimates. Private credit has been in the spotlight in recent weeks, with a wave of redemptions and fears about the impact of artificial intelligence causing jitters for the $1.8 trillion asset class. Morgan Stanley’s North Haven Private Income Fund was among a series of funds that capped redemptions during the quarter. Investors have been eager for executive commentary on the asset class, and each bank’s exposure to it, during earnings conference calls this week. Goldman Chief Executive Officer David Solomon said Monday that he expects that “there’s going to continue to be some noise around the retail space.” Read More: Goldman CEO Sees Noise Persisting on Retail Private-Credit Funds Morgan Stanley’s non-interest expenses, up 12% to $13.5 billion, came in slightly higher than expected. Marvell Technology will continue to be a winner of the red-hot artificial intelligence trade despite potential supply constraints, according to Oppenheimer. The investment firm has an outperform rating on the semiconductor name. It also has a $170 price target on shares, implying 27% upside from Tuesday's close. "We see MRVL share stable to increasing across core networking markets…and look for the segment to lead upside if our [capital expenditure] assumptions prove conservative," analyst Rick Schafer said in a note to clients. Last month, the company struck a $2 billion deal to connect its technology to the Nvidia AI factory and AI-RAN ecosystem, with the aim of bolstering efforts to develop next-generation AI infrastructure. That should expand Marvell's total addressable market for networking products, according to the analyst. Oppenheimer sees revenue from networking interconnects growing more than 50% to $5 billion this year. It also expects the firm to bring in more than $600 million from its switch offerings and more than $2 billion from application-Specific Integrated Circuits, or specialized microchips, in 2026. Overall revenue seems poised to hit the high-teens billion dollars from $15.2 billion, if the company notches network growth of around 50% this year and next, the analyst added. To be sure, supply constraints affecting wafers, or a critical component in some microdevices like semiconductor chips, threaten to limit the firm's growth. However, Marvell management should be able to build ahead in the company's merchant networking franchise, protecting the company from such a headwind, according to Oppenheimer. Shares are up more than 57% in the year to date, vastly overperforming the overall market.

The European Union will allow member states more flexibility to subsidize fuel and fertilizer prices to soften the impact of the price shock from the Iran war. However, any additional aid provided will have to be granted before the end of the year, with support for fuel limited to 50% of the extra costs from the conflict, the new rules will state, according to a draft of a temporary state-aid framework seen by Bloomberg News. “The commission has learned from past crises that swift action and targeted flexibility are key to containing the hit of geoeconomic repercussions for Europe,” the draft, which is still subject to change, says. “As in previous crises, the commission considers it necessary to respond quickly to mitigate risks for the economy.” Read more: EU to Bet on Electrification to Avert Recurring Energy Crises High energy prices were already at the top of the bloc’s political agenda before the conflict in the Middle East flared up, jolting the world’s energy supplies. Since the start of the conflict, the bloc’s bill for fossil fuel imports has increased by over €22 billion ($25.7 billion), European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Monday at a press conference in Brussels. Analysis from Bloomberg Economics shows that the war could take inflation in the euro-area to 3% this year, with a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz potentially pushing that to 4%. The proposal to grant more leeway to national governments comes as some European countries have rushed to shield citizens and industry from high prices. The commission does not comment on draft documents. This week, Germany agreed on €1.6 billion in fuel-price relief, including the reduction of a gasoline tax by 17 cents per liter over a period of two months. Meanwhile, in Ireland protesters blocked an oil refinery and demonstrated over the government’s handling of soaring fuel prices, prompting Dublin to offer relief worth hundreds of millions of euros to consumers and road-hauliers. Chip Somodevilla President Donald Trump said he would move to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell if he does not step down from the Board of Governors “on time,” escalating tensions with the central bank. Trump also said he is not planning to drop a Department of Justice probe into Powell and reiterated the need to investigate issues tied to the Federal Reserve’s building project. “We have to find out what happened,” he told Fox Business, while adding that he hopes Kevin Warsh will be confirmed as the next Fed chairman. The comments come after Powell said in March that he does not plan to leave his position on the Board of Governors until a Justice investigation involving him has concluded. Under the Federal Reserve Act, a president can remove a member of the Board of Governors "for cause," a standard that is not clearly defined.
