Péter Magyar did not need to dismantle the system – but he understood that Hungarians care more about the cost of living than conspiracies Hungary’s election delivered an unprecedented victory for Viktor Orbán’s challenger. With a record turnout of nearly 80% and a supermajority for the Tisza party of almost 70% of the seats, this was not merely a change of government: it was a change of regime, compressed into a single election night. After 16 years in power, Orbán became the victim of his own creation. Hungary’s electoral machinery, carefully engineered to convert a relative majority into overwhelming parliamentary dominance, worked perfectly – just not for him. In the end, the opposition leader, Péter Magyar, did not need to dismantle the system; he simply recognised the rules of the game and played to win. Orbán’s 2011 electoral laws , designed to punish a fragmented opposition, ultimately proved fatal to their creator, when he was faced with a challenger who could turn those winner-takes-all mechanics to his advantage. Getty Images The last few months have been downright brutal for shareholders of Novo Nordisk A/S ( NVO ). Since I wrote about the company in January of this year, it has seen its share price dropped 36.1%. This compares to the 5.4% drop of the S&P 500. Declining revenue and profitability for the most recent quarter did not do the company any favors. And even though the business is continuing to grow in some significant ways, it is losing market share to competitors, most notably Eli Lilly and Company ( LLY ). In terms of valuation, the business is certainly attractive to justify a ‘buy’ rating at this time. But until the firm can deal with the challenges it is facing, I believe that maintaining it as a ‘hold’ candidate is the appropriate course of action. It is worth noting that my opinion on the matter could change as new data comes in. The good news is that new data is just around the corner. Management is going to be announcing financial results for the first quarter of the company's 2026 fiscal year on May 6th. But leading up to that point, the expectation that analysts have is for revenue and profits to worsen. Hopefully, however, we would get more insight into the health of the company and its future plans. A necessary disclosure Before I dive into my analysis, there is an important disclosure that I need to make here. The fact of the matter is that Novo Nordisk reports financial results in Danish krone as opposed to the US dollar. While any financial figures that you see in company imagery in this article will be in the native currency, I have converted into US dollars when analyzing the company. In addition to this fitting my own situation, it likely fits most of my readers as well. I used the current exchange rate of 0.15414 US dollar for each Danish krone. Novo Nordisk has shed some weight… I mean wealth In my view, the reason why shares of Novo Nordisk have fallen so far is because of a recent decline in financial performance . Take the final quarter of t...

tadamichi/iStock via Getty Images OpenAI ( OPENAI ) is planning to start pricing some ChatGPT ads based on if people click on the ads rather than just how many people see them, The Information reported, citing an agency executive who spoke with the AI startup's staff and works with ChatGPT advertisers. In addition, OpenAI has indicated it plans to introduce ads aimed at getting people to take a specific action, like making a purchase or downloading an app, said the agency executive, though the company has not put a firm timeline on when that could happen, the report added . OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha. The discussions indicate OpenAI’s efforts to make ChatGPT more appealing for marketers as it chases its ambitious growth targets and looks to compete with digital ad giants Meta Platforms ( META ) and Google ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ). Earlier this month, it was reported that OpenAI expects to generate about $2.5B in advertising revenue this year, with projections rising to as much as $100B annually by 2030. The company's ad pilot program in the U.S. had generated over $100M in annualized revenue in six weeks of launch. The AI giant, which began showing ads in ChatGPT in early February, has so far only provided early advertisers with aggregated data like impressions, clicks, and spend. Meta and Google, by contrast, provide additional information on who sees ads and if they lead to purchases, the report noted. Marketers have noted that it is hard to tell if ChatGPT’s early ads are working and likely need stronger tracking and measurement tools from OpenAI before they will move beyond small, experimental ad spending. Offering pricing on a per-click basis would let advertisers pay when users engage with an ad, while conversion-oriented ad campaigns may let them optimize spending toward actions like buying, according to the report. "A lot of clients who would have the budget to want to test on a new surface are holding back and a...

Alexandre Landriault-Brule /iStock via Getty Images The last article noted that now all of the production for Baytex Energy ( BTE ) is now in Canada (and it reports using Canadian dollars). The company also has a new CEO. The closing of the sale of the Eagle Ford production now means that this is mostly a heavy oil producer. But that became a very profitable area to be in with recent technology advances. At the same time, the company is developing the Duvernay holdings for more light oil production. This is also now a very low debt company with solid profitability prospects. Spring Breakup Spring Breakup in Canada is a time when much of the industry has reduced activity until this part of the year passes. Because operational activity is often low (and restarts at some point in the summer), there is often time to review the budget. Normally, that is no big deal as often the budget review during Spring Breakup does not result in a whole lot of change. However, the Iranian situation may change that outlook for Canadian companies. During the conference call , management noted that Spring Breakup might produce a very different outcome now that commodity prices are much higher. This company (as noted in the last article) already had a large cash balance. What was going to happen was probably an attempt to retire a significant amount of stock at lower prices than is the case now. The hope is that before Spring Breakup is over, the Iranian situation will have some solid guidance forward so that oil and gas companies can plan for the future. In the United States, there is no Spring Breakup and hence no reduction in activity. But that means a change in budgets or guidance is far less likely. In either case, if the way forward in Iran is not properly communicated so that the industry can plan, then there is unlikely to be production changes in North America anywhere. But in Canada, with the routine review of budgets during Spring Breakup (which is now likely underway), a lot o...

JHVEPhoto/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Albertsons' earnings, guidance and more I last covered Albertsons (NYSE ACI ) back in December 2014. They were just coming out of a broken-up merger deal with Kroger ( KR ) and would have to remain an independent brick-and-mortar grocery chain, still fighting against the grocery behemoths like Walmart ( WMT ) and Kroger itself. Seeking Alpha Even though Albertsons appeared cheap by nearly any metric, growth is always the question at hand and the first thing the market considers. Data by YCharts 2020-2022 was a poignant year for grocery chains, including Albertsons, in the depths of COVID. Grocery stores were one of the only things open, and people shopped and ate at home. They were also being subsidized by the US government and helicopter money infusions. Price also spiked at that time, and Kroger may have gotten a false signal as to the feasibility of the merger from obscured COVID-era numbers. Q4 earnings Fresh off the presses, the Albertsons Q4 numbers and guidance did have a few positive markers : Susan Morris (CEO & Director) said the quarter produced “identical sales increased 0.7%” and “better-than-expected adjusted EBITDA of $903 million” despite “greater-than-expected pharmacy headwinds.” She also highlighted capital returns, saying the company “returned more than $1.8 billion to shareholders through share repurchase and dividends.” EPS of $0.48 beats by $0.04. Revenue of $20.25B (7.73% Y/Y) misses by $201.04M for Q4. While the expected number for EPS had been revised downward several times by analysts leading into the quarter, the main headline here is the miss on revenue. When it comes to retail, revenue is the lifeblood of profit and the ultimate indicator of demand and foot traffic. GAAP numbers are greatly affected by accounting and expense timing, but revenue can not be opaque. If a company [especially retail grocery] can not hit the top-line numbers, I would expect the share price to remain muted. The posit...

Greetings, it’s Bruce Einhorn in Princeton. Amazon’s buying satellite operator Globalstar in a deal to narrow the gap with Starlink. But first... Three things you need to know today: • SpaceX deal for EchoStar will save CEO’s heirs $3 billion . • NASA’s lunar economy is underway ( video ). • Telesat’s rebuild gets boost from Canada’s defense war chest . A new D2D player The $11.6 billion acquisition of Globalstar is upending the satellite industry, as Jeff Bezos & Co. push to make Amazon Leo the main alternative to SpaceX’s Starlink ahead of its blockbuster IPO . Bloomberg reported back in October that Elon Musk’s company had held early talks about purchasing GlobalStar. A deal would’ve added the satellite operator’s wireless spectrum to what SpaceX agreed in September to buy from EchoStar for about $17 billion . As the industry laggard, though, Amazon needs a deal more. The company recently announced it has launched more than 200 satellites “and has another 200+ stacked and ready for launch.” Unfortunately, that leaves Amazon well behind its target set by the Federal Communications Commission for about 1,600 satellites by July. Also, as Desjardins Capital Markets analysts pointed out earlier this month on a possible Amazon/Globalstar deal, the e-commerce giant’s purchase would likely face fewer antitrust and spectrum-concentration concerns than a SpaceX-Globalstar deal. Amazon’s had a tricky relationship with the regulator lately. The company got a dressing down from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr last month after the company objected to SpaceX plans to deploy more satellites. However, Carr on Tuesday spoke positively about the acquisition in an interview with CNBC . With the Globalstar purchase, Amazon said it plans on entering the direct-to-device market, a business just getting started that promises to use satellites instead of cell towers for voice, text and data, freeing users from the tyranny of dead zones. Amazon won’t be a standalone carrier with Globalstar’s sp...

US Prosecutors Make Surprise Visit To Fed HQ Renovation Project Federal prosecutors on Tuesday made a surprise visit to the Federal Reserve headquarters building that's undergoing a $2.5 billion renovation, as they continue to investigate whether Fed Chair Jerome Powell lied to Congress about the cost and scope of the project. Construction workers told the prosecutors they couldn't come on the site without prior authorization, the Wall Street Journal reported. Instead, they were referred to the Fed's lawyers to coordinate a return visit. A worker at a construction gate outside the Federal Reserve's Eccles Building in July 2025 (Jonathan Ernst, Reuters via USA Today ) The provocative move is the latest chapter in a months-long legal drama over the enormously expensive renovation of two Fed office buildings built in the 1930s, and whether Powell made false statements about the project in a congressional hearing last June. Specifically, Powell disputed media reports and accusations from administration officials and congressional Republicans that the project had extravagant design features , such as a VIP dining room, premium marble, water features and a rooftop terrace garden. Last year, Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought reported that the $2.5 billion cost was $700 million over budget. President Trump, who has repeatedly criticized Powell for not pushing interest even lower than they are, was quick to condemn the Fed director for the steep price of the project. “When you spend $2.5 billion on, really, a renovation, I think it’s really disgraceful,” he said last year. More recently, he said the lead contractor "is probably one of the richest men in the country right now." The ongoing drama had a moment of comic relief in July, when Trump joined Powell in touring the construction site with reporters tagging along: JUST IN: President Trump starts arguing with a clearly uncomfortable Jerome Powell as the two wear their hard hats. Trump: So we're takin...

Allbirds ( BIRD ) skyrocketed more than 340% on Wednesday after announcing a shocking pivot from being a trendy shoe seller to an AI compute infrastructure name. The updated version of Allbirds, which will be called NewBird AI, announced a deal to raise up to $50M in funding. "The company will initially seek to acquire high-performance, low-latency AI compute hardware and provide access under long-term lease arrangements, meeting customer demand that spot markets and hyperscalers are unable to reliably service, read a company statment. Allbirds traces its roots back to New Zealand in 2007 and was later developed by former NFL star Tim Brown into a wool-based shoe concept. Brown partnered with biotech engineer Joey Zwillinger in 2015, and the company launched its Wool Runner in 2016 with a direct-to-consumer model focused on simplicity and sustainability. The brand grew quickly by tapping into Silicon Valley’s appetite for minimalist, eco-friendly products, expanding into retail and new materials like eucalyptus fiber. Allbirds ( BIRD ) went public in November 2021, but its share price declined over the last four years after posting a long streak of unprofitable quarters. Shares of Allbirds ( BIRD ) were up more than 345% in early trading amid a high level of short interest outstanding on the stock.
