For China, with the world’s largest workforce and a sizable lead in the robotaxi space, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The Chinese government still isn’t issuing new licenses for autonomous vehicles after a high-profile snafu in March resulted in more than 100 of Baidu’s robotaxis turning into bricks in the central Chinese megacity of Wuhan. People familiar with the matter have signaled it might take a while for China to resume handing out new permits, as authorities wait for a full-blown review of the incident. But longer term, the big hurdle will probably be dealing with job-security worries caused to taxi and ride-hailing drivers. The last time authorities suspended licensing, in 2024, they did so after complaints flared from residents and taxi drivers in Wuhan over Baidu’s robotaxis there. Beyond worker frustrations, China’s own sputtering economy is helping to bias the country toward job preservation, despite a state-directed push to dominate AI and robotaxis. The latest batch of official Chinese employment statistics revealed the jobless rate climbed to 7.7% in March for 25- to 29-year-olds. That’s up from 7.2% a year ago and the highest since the National Bureau of Statistics revamped its employment data more than two years ago. SK Hynix made a confidential filing to list shares in the U.S. this year, which a source said could raise as much as $14 billion. The fundraising follows a massive 250% surge in its share price this year on an AI-driven rally. Its market value topped $1 trillion last week. The company is a major supplier to Nvidia and expects a U.S. listing to widen its investor base. SK Hynix also told investors it couldn't give specific updates on the listing process.
