Juanmonino/iStock via Getty Images Iran launched multiple waves of missiles toward Israel on Sunday, raising fresh concerns about the stability of a fragile ceasefire that has largely held during the 100-day conflict involving Tehran, Israel and the United States. “At this time, the Israeli Air Force is operating to intercept and strike threats where necessary,” the Israeli Defense Forces said before warning of another round of incoming missiles. Israeli officials later said all of the missiles from the initial attacks were intercepted and that no injuries had been reported. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had carried out a new missile strike against Israel, citing Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. The statement also cautioned against further retaliation. The latest exchange highlights the growing risk that regional tensions could spill over into a broader conflict just as diplomatic efforts to extend the ceasefire appear stalled. For investors, renewed hostilities could increase volatility across energy markets, particularly if fighting threatens shipping routes in the Persian Gulf or delays negotiations over Iran's nuclear program and the possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil supplies. Air raid sirens sounded across several parts of Israel, prompting authorities to cancel school nationwide on Monday as a precaution. The missile launches follow the most serious deterioration in security conditions since the ceasefire took effect around April 8. Efforts by Washington and Tehran to extend the truce have become mired in disagreements over frozen Iranian assets and ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon. Cross-border fighting continued through the weekend. The Israeli military said it intercepted two projectiles fired from Lebanon on Sunday. Israel responded with an airstrike on two residential buildings in B...

Welcome to CFO Briefing, a newsletter dedicated to corporate finance and what leaders need to know. This week, we interview Robinhood’s CFO and take a look at what companies are doing to better monitor employee spending. Spending controls As finance departments tap every available source of capital to fund investments in artificial intelligence, they’re taking a closer look at the longstanding challenge of controlling how employees spend company money. Some 88% of companies agree their future growth depends on getting a better handle on employee expenditures, according to a survey by American Express Co. And 42% said they would like stronger controls over spending by staff. It’s a bit of a chicken-or-the-egg situation, in that tighter management of employee expenses can free up budget for technology that can help companies better manage employee expenses. “Expense management processes can be slow and manual,” said Eva Reda , executive vice president at American Express. They’re often a “pain point for both employees submitting expense reports and finance teams looking to reconcile expenses and close the books every month.” Finance teams are particularly concerned about spending on personal cards, which offer less visibility because companies don’t have access to transaction-level data. And two-thirds of companies surveyed said using multiple financial systems makes it harder to track expenses. More than 90% said they’re now focused on consolidating those platforms, and companies that use AI were twice as likely to say it’s very easy to see where their company is spending. Companies are most commonly using AI in expense management to detect fraud and errors, track spending and digitize receipts, according to the survey, which polled 513 corporate finance decision-makers. — Victor Swezey The number $1,500 The monthly maximum each employee of Uber Technologies Inc. can spend on tokens for certain coding tools. magicmine Boehringer Ingelheim said its experimental obesity drug survodutide significantly reduced harmful abdominal and liver fat in two Phase III clinical trials, adding to evidence that the treatment could improve metabolic health beyond simply helping patients lose weight. The closely held German drugmaker presented detailed results Sunday at the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting, expanding on previously reported findings that survodutide helped patients lose up to 16.6% of their body weight over 76 weeks. The newly released analyses showed the drug reduced visceral fat, the fat that surrounds internal organs in the abdomen, by as much as 34% and lowered liver fat by up to 63.1% in patients with obesity or overweight. Researchers also found that most of the weight lost came from fat rather than muscle, a key consideration for physicians evaluating obesity treatments. Why it matters for investors The results strengthen Boehringer's position in the increasingly competitive obesity drug market, where companies are racing to demonstrate benefits that extend beyond weight reduction. Evidence that a therapy can improve liver health, reduce metabolically harmful fat and potentially address obesity-related diseases could help differentiate products from rivals and expand future commercial opportunities. The data are particularly important because obesity-related liver disease is emerging as one of the pharmaceutical industry's most closely watched growth markets. Survodutide belongs to a new class of medicines known as dual agonists. The drug activates both GLP-1 and glucagon receptors, two biological pathways involved in regulating appetite, metabolism and energy use. GLP-1 drugs, including Eli Lilly's ( LLY ) Zepbound and Novo Nordisk's ( NVO ) Wegovy, help patients feel fuller and eat less. Boehringer believes the glucagon component may provide additional benefits by directly reducing fat stored in the liver. The findings came from the Phase III SYNCHRO...

(0:17) May CPI expected to show renewed pressures as rate hike odds rise . (1:30) Oracle earnings spotlight AI cloud growth. (2:13) SpaceX ( SPCX ) is set to begin trading on the Nasdaq Friday after pricing what could be the largest IPO in history by valuation. Reuters reported that the company has already received about $150B in orders , more than double the roughly $75B it is seeking to raise. SpaceX is offering about 555.6M shares at $135 each, valuing the company at roughly $1.8T. While demand has been strong, not everyone agrees with the valuation. Aswath Damodaran, the NYU professor known as the "dean of valuation," estimates SpaceX's equity value at closer to $1.3T . Damodaran told The Wall Street Journal's Take On the Week podcast that a key point of disagreement is the company's assumptions about the size of its AI business, including xAI and Grok. He argued that SpaceX's projections for the AI market stretch the bounds of plausibility. Meanwhile, Apple ( AAPL ) kicks off its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, where investors will be looking for updates on Apple Intelligence, Siri and the company's broader AI strategy . Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said the eventual monetization of Siri and AI could add another $75 to $100 to Apple's share price and is "not being factored into the current multiple." Wedbush has an Outperform rating and a $400 price target on the stock. Looking to the economy, attention turns back to inflation after Friday's stronger-than-expected jobs report raised concerns about wage pressures. The May CPI report arrives Wednesday. Economists expect headline CPI to rise 0.3% in May, with the annual rate at 4.2%. Core CPI is expected to increase 0.5%, lifting the annual rate to 2.9%, still 90 basis points above the Fed's target. Wells Fargo said one area likely to...

NicoElNino/iStock via Getty Images By Magdalena Ocampo, Market Strategist Diversification is becoming harder to achieve This year’s unsettling macro events have reinforced diversification as a critical tool for managing volatility while still capturing thematic opportunities. In 2025, diversification proved essential as U.S. policy upheaval drove a rotation out of domestic assets and toward international markets, particularly those underpinned by supportive domestic policies and improving growth outlooks. This year, however, investors have gravitated back to the U.S., as the energy shock highlighted relative resilience at home while reinforcing structural advantages in areas like AI. Still, the S&P 500’s concentration remains a concern. Technology now accounts for nearly 40% of the index, leaving investors exposed if expectations for hyperscaler spending begin to soften. Moreover, given the global nature of tech supply chains, any slowdown in U.S. AI investment would likely have meaningful spillovers into regions whose earnings are closely tied to the AI cycle. As a result, diversification is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve. Shared exposure to AI and global energy dynamics are reducing regional differentiation, forcing investors to reassess where true diversification can still be found. South Korea and Taiwan: at the heart of the U.S. AI cycle South Korea and Taiwan are among the regions most exposed to the Middle East conflict, as a meaningful share of their crude oil and natural gas imports transits the Strait of Hormuz. Even so, the macro impact on those economies has been less severe than initially feared, enabling markets to sharply rebound following the initial March selloffs. Returns in the MSCI South Korea and Taiwan equity indices are now at roughly 117% and 63% year-to-date in USD terms, respectively, as of June 1. While policy measures, such as electricity price freezes and fuel price caps, have helped cushion households and corporations from t...
