The New York Knicks are back in the NBA finals for the first time since 1999 after another overwhelming victory completed a 4-0 sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals. The Knicks are in ruthless form as they attempt to win their first NBA championship since 1973. They also swept the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference semi-finals and beat the Atlanta Hawks 4-2 in the first round of the playoffs. While their path to the finals in their Eastern Conference has been smooth they will face a stiff test to claim the NBA title. They will face either the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder, a team with very few flaws, or the San Antonio Spurs, led by 7ft 4in superstar Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs-Thunder series is tied at 2-2 with Game 5 on Tuesday night. For now though, the Knicks can rest up and look back on an excellent series against the Cavaliers after completing the sweep with a 130-93 win. Cleveland only seriously threatened the Knicks in the opening game of the East finals, when they held a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter, before Jalen Brunson inspired New York to a thrilling comeback win in overtime. The Knicks won the next three games by 16, 13 and 37 points and are on an 11-game winning streak, the third longest in a single postseason in NBA history. China’s efforts to control capital outflows are colliding with growing demand from mainland investors for access to overseas stocks. After an estimated $1 trillion of unauthorized money left the country last year, authorities launched a sweeping crackdown on offshore trading platforms accused of helping investors bypass Beijing’s capital controls. The move has already rattled brokerages and investors, and could reshape how mainland Chinese access foreign markets. What are the rules around foreign stock trading? Beijing has restricted outbound capital flows for decades to prevent sudden and large cross-border movements, particularly during periods when capital flight has threatened to drain foreign exchange reserves. Individuals are subject to a $50,000 annual cap on dollar purchases, primarily intended for overseas travel, education and other non-investment purposes. Local citizens and companies also face restrictions around converting yuan into foreign currencies to trade securities overseas. Mainlanders are only able to invest overseas through special channels with stringent government oversight, such as the Southbound Stock Connect and the Wealth Connect programs, which are designed for investment in certain stocks and other financial products in Hong Kong. Another channel, the Qualified Domestic Institutional Investor program, allows mainlanders to invest in global markets through mutual funds, while cross-border total return swaps are often used by institutions to trade overseas securities through brokers. Retail investors also have direct access to certain Hong Kong-listed shares through the Mainland-Hong Kong Mutual Recognition of Funds scheme. Besides from using those approved channels, any overseas trading without approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission and other regulators is considered illegal, and that’s the target of the latest crackdown. How is Beijing cracking down on illegal overseas trading? Since 2022, unauthorized overseas brokers...

Saxophonist Sonny Rollins, who spent more than two years practising in solitude as a young man on a windswept New York bridge to reinvent his playing and become one of the giants of jazz, died at the age of 95 on Monday, his publicist said. Rollins had recorded the confidently titled Jazz Colossus album in 1956. But the saxophonist remained wracked with self-doubt. So, in the summer of 1959, he began to play on the windswept pedestrian walkway of New York’s Williamsburg Bridge. Initially a place where he could avoid disturbing his pregnant neighbour, the walkway became the site of endless practice. Advertisement “What made me withdraw and go to the bridge was how I felt about my own playing,” Rollins told the Guardian newspaper in 2022. “I knew I was dissatisfied.” He ended up spending more than two years there, often for 14 or 15 hours a day. Advertisement The resulting record, The Bridge, was not a complete break from his previous style but took his soloing and improvisation to a new level. A review in the Jazz Journal at the time said Rollins was able “to extract the last ounce of meaning from a particular phrase taken from the melody of the song”.
