However, all of this growth has some investors concerned that the market is overvalued and due for a correction -- or a full-blown recession. While one stock market metric is sounding the alarm right now, history still has good news for investors. Will the stock market crash in 2026? The S&P 500 Shiller CAPE Ratio is a stock market metric used to compare historic market valuations. It measures the S&P 500's current price against the index's 10-year inflation-adjusted earnings, helping gauge whether the market is over- or undervalued. A higher ratio suggests that the market may be overvalued, and historically, stock prices tend to fall in the years following peaks in the S&P 500 Shiller CAPE Ratio. Throughout the S&P 500's history, there have only been two periods in which this ratio spiked drastically. The first was the Great Depression, when it peaked at around 35. The second was the dot-com bubble burst in the early 2000s, when it reached a record high of around 44. As of this writing, the S&P 500 Shiller CAPE Ratio is nearing 40 -- its second highest point in history. To be clear, this doesn't necessarily mean that the stock market is going to crash in 2026. The President wants lower interest rates. The bond market seems to be pricing in higher interest rates. Inflation is not gone . It may even be the biggest challenge we have in 2026. The war in Iran has caused another energy premium. U.S. public debt is back on the front page. The Fed no longer seems united. Kevin Warsh became Fed Chair on May 22, 2026 , with Trump publicly calling for him to be "totally independent," That is what makes this situation interesting. The market likes to convince itself that a change at the top of the Fed is a simple event; a dovish chair comes in, rates go down, stock prices go up, and the dollar goes down, and everyone wins. However, that is not how it works. If you dig deeper into this subject, I believe Warsh comes into office with three pressure points waiting below the surface. There are three market risks that investors cannot ignore. One of them is inflation. It has gotten high enough that cutting interest rates will be extremely difficult. Another is FED reform. Warsh wants to change an organization that, by its very nature, resists change from within. A third is independence.
