European equities could attract investors who are worried about the dominance of a handful of technology stocks, according to Sharon Bell , senior European equity strategist at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. “US investors, in particular, see that when they invest in the US, they are investing in five or six companies really,” Bell told Bloomberg Television. “Whereas if you invest in Europe, the breadth has been wider.” European stocks have benefited from robust earnings, including from companies that enable the AI boom by providing infrastructure, energy and tools for the sector. The region has not seen aggregate earnings downgrades despite having less direct tech exposure than the US or Asia, Bell said. A quick resolution to the Middle East war would help European stocks because they have relatively high exposure to energy prices and the region’s economy will suffer if inflation squeezes consumers, Bell said. Rising bond yields pose a threat to sectors like real estate and homebuilders, and they are most likely to benefit from an end to hostilities, according to Bell. If inflation and rates were to stay high, technology, utilities and industrials would be attractive as they can “grow out” of problems, she said. Looking at the UK, Bell said the country faces a “double whammy” of political uncertainty and fiscal vulnerability. The FTSE 100 is less of a concern because it is dominated by global companies, with 80% of earnings from outside the UK. The FTSE 250 is more sensitive to domestic growth and higher yields, she said. Is a recession imminent? The only time anyone seems to agree on the answer to that question is when we're already in a recession (generally defined as two or more consecutive quarters of negative economic growth). But that hasn't stopped people from trying to read various economic indicators to determine if a recession is on the way, and a big one just triggered. Here's what happened, and what investors should do now. Approaching a record high One of the most common tools for assessing a single company's valuation is the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio. In 1988, economist Robert Shiller devised a method to calculate a cyclically adjusted P/E for the entire S&P 500. Dubbed the "Shiller CAPE ratio" (CAPE stands for "cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings"), it has been retroactively computed back to 1871. And that computation contained a big surprise. Since 1871, the CAPE ratio has only risen above 24 six times. The first five times each occurred just prior to a major market downturn, including just before the Great Depression in 1929 and the Great Recession in 2008. The sixth time is happening right now. Today, the CAPE ratio is well above 24: It's at 39.6. The only time it's ever been higher was on the way to its all-time high of 44.2 in March 2000 -- just before the dot-com bubble burst, causing stocks to plummet. That said, investors shouldn't panic-sell. While the CAPE ratio indicates that stocks in general are richly valued, it doesn't necessarily mean a recession, or even a bear market, is imminent. Remember that even during market downturns, investors who hold onto their stocks generally come out ahead of those who try to time the market.

The most-active coking coal contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange climbed as high as 1,330 yuan ($196) a ton on Tuesday before closing at 1,260 yuan, up 5.09% on the day. It had already risen 7.97% in the previous session. Spot prices also increased, with coking coal in Lüliang, Shanxi, up 100 yuan on Monday to 1,700 yuan a ton.

Humza Yousaf, Scotland’s former first minister, has called for Peter Murrell to get a “hefty” jail sentence after he admitted stealing £400,000 from the Scottish National party. Yousaf had been serving as first minister for just eight days when Murrell was arrested in April 2023 at the home he then shared with Nicola Sturgeon, Yousaf’s ally and mentor, in a police fraud investigation. Yousaf blames that crisis for immediately undermining his shortlived period in office, which ended in chaos after he unilaterally cancelled the SNP’s power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens a year later. “First of all, let me say frankly how pissed off I am at Peter Murrell,” Yousaf told the Stooshie politics podcast for the Dundee-based Courier newspaper. “I hope he ends up with quite a hefty sentence, quite frankly, because he deserves it.” Murrell had by then been chief executive of the SNP for 22 years, and with his marriage to Sturgeon, was one of the most powerful people in British politics.
