Mouth gaping, the swallow chick leans perilously over the edge of the nest cup. It is young, just a scrap of body, and at least a week away from being ready to fledge. But under the tin roof the heat is rising, becoming unbearable. The chick perches on the edge of the nest, opening and closing its mouth, trying to stay cool in the absence of sweat glands. Then, it’s hard to tell if it overbalances, seeking cooler air, or makes a decision. Either way, it plunges down, dropping with no hope of flight. Somehow it misses the hard breezeblock ledge, and fortunately lands on the horse bedding. View image in fullscreen Huddled by the wall, three swallow chicks bailed from the nest. Photograph: Kate Blincoe The last to bail from the nest, it shuffles along to join its two scrabbly siblings, huddled against the wall. The chicks are utterly vulnerable to horse hooves, the yard cat, and of course the ongoing risk of overheating and dehydration. The parent swallows are still doing their best, swooping in with insects that bring both nutrition and moisture. It is only 10am in a record-breaking week of May heat. This weather can be fun for us, but it’s not all ice lollies and barbecues. For nature, it is brutal, dehydrating animals, drying up soil and ponds, disrupting food chains, stressing trees and scorching plants. These swallows left the heat of South Africa for our plentiful insect supply and supposedly temperate spring and summer. This level of heat is not what they have evolved for. View image in fullscreen Even younger swallow chicks on the concrete floor, far from ready for life outside the nest. Photograph: Kate Blincoe At another swallow nest, in the feed barn, three more chicks have bailed from their nest. The distance from roof to ground here is much higher, about four metres, and the landing is concrete. When I check later, there’s a small body on the hard floor, flies already gathering. An adult bird flits back and forth over the corpse, threatening to dive-bomb m...

Donny DBM/iStock via Getty Images Key Takeaways Convertible Securities Market: On a global basis, convertible bonds (CB S ) returned 2.3% in the first quarter of 2026 (1Q26), as measured by ICE BofA indexes. Within the United States, performance within the asset class varied widely as equity-sensitive convertibles (+15.7%) diverged from both balanced convertibles (+0.1%) and “busted” (credit-/rate-sensitive) convertibles (-0.7%). Overall results were pressured by widespread selling in March, when the asset class collectively fell 5.5% as investor concerns around the war in Iran and the resilience of the artificial intelligence ( AI ) trade took out some of the air from a number of formerly high-flying pockets of CBs, including Asia and AI. On the supply side, the global CB market remained quite active and priced $53.3 billion in new issuance during 1Q26, more than double 2025’s first quarter pace and potentially on a run-rate for another strong year of more than $150 billion by year-end 2026. The bulk of the capital-raising activity was to fund new capital expenditure (capex) projects and refinancings, though a large portion was also slated for opportunistic general corporate purposes. Although AI-linked names were among the hardest hit in terms of absolute performance during the quarter, they dominated primary issuance volumes. According to some analysts, issuers whose existing CBs are comfortably “in the money” may now be incentivized to flush and refinance such deals given the issuer-favorable backdrop of still-high underlying share prices and tight credit spreads, well-supported stock volumes, and strong investor demand for new paper. Detractors: Financials, consumer discretionary, health care, industrials and consumer staples sector convertibles. Contributors: Information technology (IT), materials, utilities and real estate sector holdings foremost. Outlook: We expect convertible and equity market volatility to persist in the near term as investors are contend...

Toyota Motor Corp. ’s global sales posted their third straight month of year-on-year declines, as disruptions due to the Middle East conflict ripple across its business, with exports to the region down by more than 90%. Global sales in April, including those of subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Co. , fell 3.7% from a year earlier to 902,015 units, the company said Thursday. Production, however, rose 3.4% to 933,685 units. Toyota has weathered the conflict better than other carmakers, keeping factories running despite disrupted routes through the Strait of Hormuz. A longer squeeze fueling shortages would test that resilience, exposing how deeply global automakers rely on Gulf-linked supplies for parts, materials and energy. While demand remains strong, with customers waiting months for some models in major markets, Toyota’s sales also fell compared to last year when they were bolstered by a buying rush ahead of tariffs and the rollout of a new RAV4 sport utility vehicle model. Sales in China, where market conditions remain challenging for Japanese carmakers, shrank 25%. Exports to the Middle East slumped 92% year on year to 2,418 vehicles. At Toyota’s earnings announcement earlier this month, accounting chief Takanori Azuma said the manufacturer exports roughly 500,000 to 600,000 vehicles annually to the Middle East, and that it was assuming slightly less than half of that volume would be affected. At the time, Toyota forecast a surprise drop in profit for the fiscal year through March 2027 as it braces for higher raw material costs due to disruptions caused by the war in Iran. The outlook for ¥3 trillion ($18.8 billion) in operating income fell short of analyst estimates, as well as the ¥3.8 trillion posted in the prior 12-month period. Based on the latest earnings report for SoFi Technologies (SOFI +1.19%), the digital-first financial services company continues to grow at an impressive clip. However, since late 2025, investors have become far less enthusiastic about SoFi and its future growth potential, at least as reflected in this stock's 50% drop from its 52-week high. Factors like the company's decision not to raise guidance have contributed to its steep decline. However, don't forget that SoFi also houses a financial technology business. At scale, this business could create significant value for SoFi investors. Down the road, management may be able to unlock this value by splitting this business from its core lending and financial services operations. SoFi has been quietly building a fintech powerhouse In recent years, SoFi's focus has been on its pivot toward becoming a "financial supermarket" for affluent, upwardly mobile millennials and Gen Z. However, a few years back, before this shift, SoFi spent heavily to bulk up its presence in the fintech space. Then, in 2022, the company acquired Technisys, another provider of back-end technology for financial services companies, for $1.1 billion. Since making these acquisitions, folding them into the aforementioned technology platform segment, SoFi's fintech business has steadily scaled. Since 2022, this segment's revenue has grown by 42%, from $315.1 million to $450.2 million. During this time, contribution profit has nearly doubled, growing from $76.5 million to $144.4 million. South Korea’s leveraged exchange-traded funds tied to chipmakers may deepen concentration in the equity market and amplify volatility, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s sales desk. Combined assets for the 16 products — linked to either Samsung Electronics Co. or SK Hynix Inc. — reached 4.3 trillion won ($2.8 billion) following their Wednesday launch, the sales desk wrote. The single stock leveraged ETFs, previously banned locally, drew huge interest from retail investors seeking to magnify bets on the two memory chipmakers at the center of the global AI boom. Kospi is the world’s hottest equity market this year with a gain of 95% through Wednesday, fueled mostly by the two chip giants. The new products require a daily rebalancing to maintain leverage ratio, forcing the funds to buy into rallies and sell into declines, according to the note, which called such trades a volatility “accelerator.” Read More: Memory Chip Frenzy Sends SK Hynix, Micron Into $1 Trillion Such vulnerability was on display Thursday as the Kospi Index fell as much as 4.7%, driven by a 6.4% loss in Samsung Electronics and a 4.1% drop in SK Hynix. One leveraged product tracking Samsung Electronics tumbled nearly 10%. There’s also the risk of the market’s dependency growing on the two stocks, which already account for about 50% of the Kospi’s weight. “Any sector-specific shock to semiconductors will now be amplified twofold by the mechanical selling of these multi-billion dollar funds, potentially triggering broader index instability,” the note said.

halbergman/iStock via Getty Images Shares of Republic Bancorp ( RBCAA ) have been a solid performer over the past year, gaining about 14%, and shares currently sit around a 52-week high. Republic is a community bank that has benefited from reinvesting securities and loans at higher yields. While the bank has a relatively expensive multiple, its solid loan book and strong capital position justify this valuation in my view. Seeking Alpha Republic Bank is a community bank that primarily operates in the Lexington, Kentucky area. It has a significant presence here with about 8% market share. Aside from operations in surrounding states, it also has a branch presence in Florida, given many customers from this region retire or “snowbird” for a part of the year in Florida. Its presence here helps to ensure it can keep customers and better manage the entire relationship. In the company’s first quarte r, reported back on April 23 , Republic Bancorp earned $2.18 per share. However, this included $0.14 of one-time items with adjusted EPS of $2.04. That was up 2.5% from last year. Republic Bancorp Balance sheet growth has been modest Looking at its balance sheet, total deposits were up about $200 million from last year, or 4%, to ~$5.5 billion. The rate on interest-bearing deposits fell by 28 bps to 1.98%, representing about 35% pass-through of Fed rate cuts. This is towards the low end of the 35%-45% beta I like to see, and it is likely a driver of RBCAA’s faster deposit growth. Essentially, it has moved rates down a bit less than peers to take market share and support asset growth. Noninterest-bearing balances (“NIB”) were down $50 million, though they rose by $100 million sequentially. After years of pressure, I believe these balances have largely bottomed, which should support margins going forward. Loan growth has been a challenge for the industry as elevated rates and macro uncertainty cause would-be borrowers to defer discretionary projects. Republic is no exception to thi...

Never miss an important update on your stock portfolio and cut through the noise. Over 7 million investors trust Simply Wall St to stay informed where it matters for FREE. Speculation is building that Tesla (NasdaqGS:TSLA) and SpaceX could pursue a merger after a potential SpaceX IPO, with some early SpaceX investors publicly calling such a move inevitable. Reports indicate Elon Musk and close colleagues are actively weighing a combined structure that could link capital allocation, AI development, and global infrastructure across both companies. Discussion around super voting control, shared technology platforms, and deeper operational ties is intensifying as cross investments and project overlaps between Tesla and SpaceX expand. Tesla, listed as NasdaqGS:TSLA, is best known for electric vehicles, energy storage, and related software, while SpaceX focuses on launch services, satellite networks, and space infrastructure. A potential merger would sit at the intersection of transportation, energy, and communications, which are all seeing rapid investment and technological change. For shareholders, the conversation is less about rockets or cars in isolation and more about how a combined platform could be structured. For you as an investor, the key question is how a merged entity might organize capital spending, AI research, and governance if this concept progresses beyond speculation. Any concrete move, especially around a future SpaceX listing followed by a combination, could reshape how markets think about Tesla's risk profile, business mix, and long term role in global infrastructure.
