Large scale can actually be a disadvantage here, as untangling processes and bureaucracies is challenging, so nimbler, smaller companies may have an advantage. Groupon ( GRPN ), the local deals site, is exhibiting this advantage as it announced its latest cost-cutting plan, which has sent the stock soaring. Year to date, Groupon has surprisingly outperformed the S&P 500 with a ~20% gain (though the stock also remains down ~25% over the trailing 12 months). The core question facing investors now: can the rally be sustained? Data by YCharts I last wrote a "Neutral" article on Groupon in March, when the stock was trading at $10 per share. Of course, what has skyrocketed the stock since then is Groupon's claims of transforming itself into an "AI-native company." In a stock market that is driven primarily by sentiment rather than fundamentals, this idea has shot up Groupon by ~2x since March, dramatically outperforming the S&P 500. The company is a holding, with consolidated businesses in telco and cable. This investment holding is controlled by John Malone and led by CEO Mike Fries. It was originally built as an EU cable consolidation platform, but the Holding evolved into a hybrid structure combining growth-oriented venture investments across media, sports, technology, and infrastructure (Fig. 1). Today, the company operates through three main pillars: 1) Telecom operation with JVs, 2) Growth with investment portfolio in scalable businesses, and 3) Corporate, where there are central costs and platform functions.
