sasirin pamai Canada ( EWC ) on Friday edged into a technical recession as weak business and government spending drove a slight contraction in the first quarter, signaling persistent slack in the economy in the wake of U.S. trade tensions. Real gross domestic product declined 0.1% on an annualized basis during the first three months of 2026, Statistics Canada reported Friday. The contraction comes after a 1% drop in the fourth quarter—revised downward from the 0.6% decrease the federal agency had previously reported. The first-quarter decline caught forecasters off guard. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected a 1.5% annualized increase, in line with the Bank of Canada’s own projection. Canada last recorded two consecutive quarters of negative growth during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Before that, the country experienced a similar downturn in 2015 when oil ( USO ) ( BNO ) prices collapsed. James Thorne, chief market strategist at Wellington-Altus, offered a blistering assessment of the news, dubbing Canada’s ( EWC ) situation the “parrot economy” and criticizing what he sees as institutional denial about the nation's economic trajectory. “Canada has slipped into a technical recession, yet Bay Street pundits and the Bank of Canada continue to insist the economy is ‘resilient’ and capable of absorbing further rate hikes. This is not analysis, it’s denial,” Thorne said. Drawing a comparison to Monty Python’s famous “dead parrot” sketch, Thorne argued that officials are engaged in “semantic gymnastics” while fundamental economic data deteriorates. “The economy isn’t weakening, it’s ‘normalizing’; it isn’t rolling over, it’s ‘adjusting,’” he said, characterizing the official narrative. “At some point, this stops being a difference of interpretation and starts looking like institutional groupthink.” Thorne warned that the insistence on economic strength in the face of weakening fundamentals risks a policy error—one where rates remain too restrictive for too long...

Brett_Hondow Halliburton ( HAL ) has been under pressure since the past month, with the stock falling more than ~7% to ~$38.88, while the S&P 500 ( SP500 ) gained ~6.46% during the same period. Even after posting higher profit in Q1 2026, investors remained focused on weaker business trends underneath the headline numbers. Halliburton’s Q1 revenue stayed nearly flat at $5.4B, showing the company is struggling to grow despite strong energy market expectations. The Middle East/Asia business was another concern, with revenue falling 13% YoY to $1.3B due to lower activity in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The company also said geopolitical tensions reduced earnings by nearly $0.02-$0.03 per share. Its important Completion & Production segment also disappointed investors. Revenue fell 3% to $3B, while operating income dropped 17% to $439M as North American activity slowed and Middle East sales weakened. Even though Barclays upgraded Halliburton ( HAL ) to overweight with a $55 price target after results, investors are still worried about weak cash flow, slower shale recovery, and margin pressure. At the same time, lower oil prices and uncertainty linked to the US-Iran conflic t have also hurt sentiment across energy stocks. However, recent investments in VoltaGrid and stable dividends have provided limited support so far. Peer weakness is also visible. Other energy stock names, including SLB N.V. ( SLB ), Baker Hughes ( BKR ), BP ( BP ), Exxon Mobil ( XOM ), NOV ( NOV ), Equinor ( EQNR ), Shell ( SHEL ), TechnipFMC ( FTI ), and Weatherford International ( WFRD ), have also traded lower over the past month. During the summer, the Federal Reserve "goes silent" between its mid-June and late-September policy meetings. Without the Fed giving any clear economic indicators through its interest rate decisions, investors typically trade less frequently. Let's review what typically happens during these "summer doldrums" and whether they impact long-term investors. How the summer doldrums impact stocks As trading volume declines during the summer, many investors take profits in their higher-growth stocks and rotate toward slower-growth defensive plays. That rotation, along with a lack of near-term catalysts from the Fed, often causes stocks to stagnate or slip lower. That's why some investors still "sell in May and go away." However, that classic mantra shouldn't matter much to long-term investors, given that the S&P 500 has generated an average annual return of about 10% since its inception in 1957. Anyone who repeatedly sold their stocks in May likely underperformed the broader market. If you had simply invested in Vanguard's S&P 500 ETF (VOO +0.24%) ten years ago and reinvested its dividends, you would have turned a $10,000 investment into about $42,500. It achieved that gain even as the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, high interest rates, and geopolitical conflicts rattled the global economy. So if you're planning to hold your stocks for years instead of quarters, it's silly to fret over the Fed's summer silence every year. But even if you're not too concerned about the summer doldrums, you should be familiar with some of the market's historical trends during this period. Without the immediate threat of a Fed rate hike, July has historically been the best month for the S&P 500. Positive corporate earnings during this month also tend...

Elena Zolotova/iStock Editorial via Getty Images By Min Joo Kang, Senior Economist, South Korea and Japan Government efforts to curb inflation are clearly bearing fruit Tokyo inflation unexpectedly eased to 1.4% year-on-year in May (vs. 1.5% in April, 1.6% market consensus and ING). The temporary utility fee waiver, gasoline price cap, and reduction of education fees pulled down overall inflation. The deceleration in food prices is related to last year’s high base, triggered by a surge in rice prices. However, service prices continued to rise, with housing up 1.3% and recreation prices up by 1.7%. Thus, we believe that underlying inflation still firmed. We think the Bank of Japan will likely monitor its new inflation metric, “core inflation excluding institutional factors,” more closely than conventional inflation readings because the current Japanese inflation data is distorted by several government measures. Also, pipeline prices have risen in the past two months, and this is expected to pass through to consumer prices. Monthly activity data was surprisingly robust Industrial production unexpectedly rebounded in April. Petrochemical-related output dropped quite sharply, but electrical and information machinery and electronic parts and devices gained solidly. Similar to other major manufacturing economies, Japanese manufacturers also benefited from a strong global chip cycle. However, recent energy supply shocks are denting the petroleum and chemical industries. Meanwhile, retail sales rose for a second straight month. Looking at the details, fuel sales dropped 4.2%. Gasoline prices have been capped at 1.70 yen per litre, but we believe higher prices have reduced overall fuel consumption. Excluding fuel, other sales rose more strongly. Auto and clothing sales rose quite firmly, by 9.7% and 2.5%, respectively. We believe the government’s various subsidies, along with solid wages, have supported consumption growth in Japan. As Novak Djokovic limped back to his chair four hours into a tennis match that had descended into hell, the 24-times grand slam winner did not have much more to give. A two-set lead had unravelled and his 39-year-old body had hit a wall against a shining opponent 20 years his junior. Having reached the umpire’s chair, Djokovic vomited into the red dust. Still, nobody has mastered the art of finding victory from a miserable position quite like Djokovic, so everybody inside Court Philippe-Chatrier knew he could conjure a path through. It took the most courageous, headstrong performance from Joao Fonseca to refuse his legendary opponent a way back. The 19-year-old Brazilian held on for a career-defining victory, closing out an astounding 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 win after 4hr 53min. While Fonseca is still a teenager this victory was a long time coming considering his talent and the attention that has been on him. Fonseca was asked about the self-belief that underscored the victory during his on-court interview. “I just played,” he said. “I just enjoyed being on court. What a pleasure it was.” For Djokovic, this is just the second time he has lost from two sets up, the other occasion coming in a 2010 French Open quarter-final against Jürgen Melzer. Djokovic had started impressively, breaking Fonseca in the Brazilian’s opening service game. For two sets, he served well, dictated from the baseline with his forehand, and exposed Fonseca’s average movement. He established a two-set lead. Fonseca has received more hype than any other young player in recent years, the attention driven by both his nuclear forehand and the passionate, ever-present Brazilian fanbase desperate to crown a new champion. At Roland Garros, the tournament previously commanded by the three-times champion Gustavo Kuerten, that emotion is felt more fervently. Brazil shirts were visible as far as the eyes could see. Having been thoroughly outplayed for two sets, Fonseca showed his toughness. He served prec...

The announcement happens after Q4 revenue hit a record $21.6 billion, up 27% year-on-year, with net profit surging 479% to $521 million. AI-related revenue grew 84% year-on-year to make up 38% of Lenovo's total quarterly sales, driven by its Infrastructure Solutions Group, which posted record quarterly revenue of $5.6 billion. Lenovo's stock surged as much as 31% on Friday and has now gained 109% in May—its best monthly performance since 1999. Shares of the world's largest PC maker have more than doubled this month, making it the top performer on the Hang Seng Index year-to-date, up 159%. The rally wasn't random. Lenovo's Q4 earnings showed quarterly revenue of $21.6 billion—up 27% year-on-year and the fastest quarterly growth rate in five years. Net profit hit $521 million, up 479% from $90 million a year earlier. When a company Lenovo's size nearly sextuples its quarterly profit, it forces the market to rethink its price targets entirely. The engine behind it is the Infrastructure Solutions Group, or ISG—Lenovo's division that builds AI-optimized servers, storage systems, and data center products for large enterprise clients and cloud providers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. ISG posted record quarterly revenue of $5.6 billion, up 37% year-on-year, and crossed $19.2 billion for the full fiscal year. Across the whole company, AI-related revenue grew 84% year-on-year and now accounts for 38% of Lenovo's total quarterly sales. More than one dollar in three that Lenovo earns today traces back to AI. Goldman Sachs more than doubled its price target on Lenovo following the results. Then came Dell. On Thursday, Dell Technologies reported Q1 FY2027 revenue of $43.84 billion, up 88% year-on-year, and raised its full-year AI server revenue guidance to $60 billion. Dell's AI server backlog now stands at $51.3 billion. ...

Eoneren/E+ via Getty Images With the stock market unexpectedly soaring in 2026 despite unprecedented geopolitical tension plus macroeconomic uncertainty, the fact that gains have been concentrated into a tiny handful of stocks has not been lost on any investor, with Micron ( MU ) recently joining the rarefied ranks of >$1 trillion stocks and one of the fastest to achieve that milestone. The question now is, how do we position our portfolios for further growth? My answer is to emphasize tilting away from semiconductor stocks that largely benefit from the data center boom in a limited window and emphasize software companies that are striking recurring revenue deals that will benefit from the AI shift for years to come. Nutanix ( NTNX ) is one of these stocks: the company is experiencing a burst of demand for its hyperconverged storage infrastructure, though its strong growth trajectory has been accompanied by a ~10% slide in the stock this year. Still, the stock just rose ~4% in response to a robust fiscal Q3 earnings print, which can help to extend a recent rebound rally in this name. Data by YCharts I last wrote a "Buy" article on Nutanix in February, when the stock was trading at $38 per share. Since then, Nutanix has rebounded healthily, outperforming the S&P 500 as investors begin to latch on to Nutanix as an AI infrastructure beneficiary. Still, the stock has a long runway ahead as its demand builds and supply is still capping near-term results. I’m reiterating my "Buy" rating here. As a reminder for investors who are newer to Nutanix, here are all the near-term catalysts that I think can continue to spark upside in this stock. Buildup of recurring revenue ensures Nutanix has a healthy growth trajectory for the long haul. Here’s the issue I have with the current semiconductor rally. Yes, it’s true that these companies are experiencing unprecedented demand. But to a large extent, they produce one-time sales of chips with a fairly long expected life. We’re valuing...
