When Albert Manifold was hired as chairman of BP Plc , he joked to friends the company needed a “gurrier” — Irish slang for a savvy and scrappy streetfighter — to help turn its fortunes around. He took the task to heart. Employees say Manifold was immediately demanding, delving into the nitty gritty across the company and putting staff on the spot, at times unpleasantly so. He clashed with Chief Executive Officer Murray Auchincloss , and then was involved in removing him. But the blunt Dubliner also won the backing of one of BP’s biggest investors and most influential critics: activist Elliott Investment Management. Just months later, the former building-materials boss is out, fired after the company abruptly issued a statement referring to “governance standards, oversight and conduct” — but left investors and analysts guessing about what exactly he’d done. People close to BP have offered a range of different reasons for the exit and broader tensions, alleging that it received multiple complaints against him of bullying and aggressive behavior; that he used a personal device for sensitive company information; and that he sought to control the relationship with Elliott while alienating other investors. Manifold quickly hit back, issuing a 773-word statement attacking what he said were “lies” being spread about him, defending his efforts to cut costs, and making implied jabs about the spending habits of his fellow directors. A representative provided further detailed comments for this story, reiterating that he was never told about any complaints about his conduct before he was removed, saying he encouraged and facilitated meetings with Elliott for colleagues, and that the use of an external email address was a company-sanctioned workaround to technology malfunctions at BP. The sudden firing of a non-executive chairman, followed by Manifold’s very public and spirited rebuttal, has transfixed the London business community as a rare example of ugly boardroom acrimony sp...

Svetlana Ustinova/iStock via Getty Images Oddity Tech Ltd. ( ODD ) is a technology platform dedicated to beauty, wellness, and dermatology services for consumers. ODD is also testing its business model because its "Try Before You Buy" approach has helped with online conversions, but it may also be creating negative signals for advertising algorithms. Essentially, their trial purchases may lead to higher return rates and higher price ads, which are then pushed to an increasingly less relevant audience. That's why ODD's main problem is its dependency on third-party platforms and how they decide to interpret its customer behavior. Since then, ODD has been trying to adjust its own data, infrastructure, and model signals to better fit the external advertising algorithms. That's why the upcoming Q1 2026 June ER will help us get a better picture of whether or not ODD will be able to turn around these advertising algorithmic setbacks, but ultimately, I remain optimistic about their efforts. A Beauty Platform Built On Data Oddity Tech Ltd. is technically a consumer technology company focused on beauty, wellness, and now medical-grade dermatology. ODD's business model hinges on selling brands directly to consumers through their online platform, which is trying to leverage AI as well in the process. ODD was initially incorporated back in 2013, and it's currently headquartered in New York City, New York. But they also have an R&D center in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Israel, and a biotechnology lab in Boston, Massachusetts. I also previously covered ODD last February, and since then, the stock has appreciated by about 19.7%, so I thought it was worthwhile updating my views on this name. Source: Oddity Website. Retrieved May 2026. As a quick recap, ODD's portfolio includes three main brands, which are 1) IL MAKIAGE , 2) SpoiledChild, and 3) METHODIQ. First, note that IL MAKIAGE is ODD's largest brand and the one that generates the most revenue. This one is focused on beauty products, such a...

Michael Nguyen/NurPhoto via Getty Images Travelers to Europe may be leaving money on the table when they buy goods there . I learned this during a recent trip to Italy. My girlfriend, who bought a pair of shoes in Venice, was able to claim a refund on the value-added tax she paid on the purchase. She ultimately got back 17 euros (US$20) on a total purchase of 155 euros (US$181). Refunds of value-added tax, known as VAT, can be worth a "chunk of money" for U.S. travelers to Europe, depending on what they buy and in which country they purchase the item, said Sofia Markovich, a travel advisor and founder of Sofia's Travel. watch now VIDEO 2:42 02:42 Late bookings and different destinations: travel impact of Iran war Squawk Box Europe Getting a few extra dollars back after a European vacation may help somewhat defray the higher cost of airfare resulting from the Iran war, and a euro-U.S. dollar exchange rate that has become less favorable in recent years. However, we would have missed out had the Italian shopkeeper not asked whether we wanted the paperwork necessary to claim the refund later, which we did with relative ease at an airport kiosk in Rome. Many times, stores don't flag the option for customers, experts said. "You have to remember to get [the paperwork] in the shop, because not every shop will remind you of it," Markovich said. "You personally have to be proactive about it." For some, the additional hassle — which generally includes an extra stop at the airport — may not be worth it for lower-value items, said Sally French, a travel expert at NerdWallet. "It's a nice-to-have, but I'm not getting to the airport early to save $10," she said. 'Definitely worth it' for luxury goods People shopping in the city center of Bonn, Germany, on April 25, 2026. Leftist German Party Leader Forced To Correct Lies About AfD Leader, Pay Her Legal Fees Via Remix News, Alice Weidel, co-leader of the anti-migration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has successfully sued the Left Party leader and won a retraction after she spread falsehoods about Weidel on live television. In mid-May, Ines Schwerdtner, the federal chairwoman of the Left Party, claimed during an interview on Welt TV that Wediel neither resides in Germany nor pays taxes. “Alice Weidel doesn’t even live in Germany, she doesn’t pay taxes here,” she told viewers. This statement is false. While Weidel spends much of her time with her family in Switzerland, she has her primary residence in Germany and pays taxes in the Federal Republic of Germany. Weidel has been very guarded about the issue over the years, as she faces a high threat level and avoids appearing in public due to the security threat she lives under. AfD leader has family taken to safe house and cancels rally due to attack threat Weidel’s lawyers explained in a warning letter, cited by Junge Freiheit , that this claim was false, as their client both lived in Germany and paid taxes. The law firm Höcker filed a lawsuit on the AfD’s behalf seeking an injunction. Weidel’s lawyers also demanded that Schwerdtner ensure the relevant passage was deleted from Welt TV’s programming. Furthermore, the lawsuit calls on the Left Party leader to acknowledge the “claim for damages.” Following this, Schwerdtner’s lawyer sent a letter to the Höcker law firm stating that their client had “indeed made a mistake.” The Left Party leader additionally undertook to “refrain” from making the false statement that Weidel does not pay taxes in Germany. The letter also pointed out that the interview in question on Welt TV had since been deleted by the broadcaster. Furthermore, Schwerdtner stated that she would transfer the legal fees “within one week.” Germany: Left Party wants voting rights for all foreigners who have lived in the co...

Marina113/iStock Editorial via Getty Images We are back to comment on CNH Industrial ( CNH ) following its Q1 results update and additional negative insights investors should consider. Our readers know we typically avoid selling rating recommendations and prefer to show opportunities in our long book; however, the company makes an exception given the multiple headwinds it is facing. As a reminder, CNH Industrial's earnings beat was primarily driven by accelerated Agriculture shipments rather than supportive demand fundamentals. It was CNH management that reported that 2026 market conditions were challenging in the agriculture market. With a UBS expert call, the company is also facing labor shortages driven by AI CAPEX in the construction segment. With a high P/E and a likelihood of a dividend cut, we continue to report a sell. Since our last update (early April 2026), the CNH share price has declined by almost 10% (Fig. 1). Mare Ev. Lab rating update Fig. 1 Q1 Results A difficult operating environment impacted CNH Industrial's Q1 performance. This was true across its two segments: agriculture and construction. That said, the company reported top-line sales broadly stable year over year. In numbers, sales reached $3.83 billion, essentially unchanged from Q1 2025. Looking at the two segments, the Agriculture division net sales increased by 1% to $2.6 billion (Fig. 2). In comparison, the Construction division remained under pressure, with sales declining by 3% year over year to $574 million (Fig. 3). All in all, CNH pricing was supportive (+$60 million in Q1). Still, it was largely offset by weaker demand conditions and lower shipment volumes in several key regions. Looking at the P&L, CNH's profitability significantly deteriorated. Based on the segment results, the Agriculture division's EBIT declined from $139 million to $27 million in Q1 2025, with a margin of 1%. Results in the Construction segment were even more pronounced. In the numbers, the EBIT division report...

NicolasMcComber/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images A Recent Bank Earnings Beat, Yet Again! Bank earnings season is not quite over yet, as just days ago Bank of Montreal ( BMO ) beat quarterly earnings estimates for the 4th time in a row, and its stock is also up nearly +92% since my buy rating in Dec. 2023 , definitively confirming my bullish thesis so far. At the time, I thought the stock was reasonably valued, and it showed compelling growth in their US business, so today's followup will explore 7 different topics of fundamental and technical analysis, as well as their fiscal Q2 results. Still a Buy, even when Overvalued For my updated thesis, I am reaffirming my prior buy rating on this stock, and as you can see in my worksheet below, the bullish view is underscored by several factors and not just one, mitigating the rich valuation and emphasizing the growth case, compelling dividend story, and conservative balance sheet risk. BMO - rating worksheet (author) This is what I would call a richly valued stock that can be a bet on quality rather than an undervaluation opportunity. Top Line Saw Growth Across Multiple Segments This first section covers top-line growth factors, and I gave the stock a modest buy rating after considering YoY revenue growth in all segments, organic client growth, a strong S&P500 forecast, and steady 5-year revenue growth, but also the rather sluggish loan growth. From the fiscal Q2 investor deck (pg. 6) , we can get a sense for the diversified business segments of this bank, all of which saw YoY revenue growth, and in particular I highlighted wealth and capital markets as standouts. BMO - revenue growth YoY (fiscal q2 investor deck) In particular, the investor deck mentioned "growth in new client assets" as a driver in the wealth segment, which indicates organic growth and not just market driven. As BMO is a bank, organic loan growth is something I think can drive upside via future interest income on loans closed now. In that regard, loan g...
