Bond traders are looking to a key jobs report this week to confirm their wagers that the US economy is strong enough to push the Federal Reserve to lift interest rates by next year. Beyond developments in the Middle East, a big focus will be Friday’s release of monthly employment figures, which are projected to show the labor market remained resilient in May. Combined with elevated oil prices and reaccelerating inflation , that may bolster expectations that officials will remove the easing bias in their statement in June, in the Fed’s first meeting under Chairman Kevin Warsh . Traders see a hike by mid-2027, if not sooner, underscoring how the spike in energy prices as a result of the Iran war has upended expectations that Warsh would deliver cuts soon after taking over. By Bloomberg Economics’ calculation , the jump in bond yields since the conflict began has already tightened financial conditions by the equivalent of about three-quarters of a percentage point of Fed rate increases. “Yields have risen, and it’s adding restrictiveness to the US economy and doing the work of the Fed,” said George Catrambone , head of fixed income at DWS Americas. As rates climb in maturities from two to 10 years, he said, “you’re really creating some headwinds that will eventually come through.” Add in the hit to wage growth from hot inflation, and mounting stress on the American consumer will weigh on the economy, Catrambone says. He favors owning two-year notes and has bought the 10-year near recent peaks. At about 4.44%, benchmark 10-year yields are down from their peak a couple weeks ago, receding along with oil prices as hopes have emerged for a resolution to the war. Auctions last week also signaled ample appetite at current yields. However, 10-year rates, a benchmark for mortgages and corporate borrowing, are still roughly a half-point above levels at the end of February. One options trade that emerged last week targeted the 10-year yield rising above 5% within months, a level...

Justin Paget/DigitalVision via Getty Images Nextracker ( NXT ) is deepening its push beyond solar tracking systems with the acquisition of battery energy storage company Prevalon, a move that BNP Paribas says strengthens the company's position as a broader play on the growing solar-plus-storage market. The company agreed to acquire Prevalon, a battery energy storage systems, or BESS, joint venture between Mitsubishi Power and EES, for $365 million. BNP Paribas analyst Moses Sutton said the transaction represents a continuation of Nextracker's strategy to evolve from a pure solar equipment supplier into a more diversified power infrastructure company. "The acquisition of Prevalon represents a continuation of the 'Nextracker' to 'Nextpower' strategy," Sutton wrote in a research note, arguing that the deal expands the company's exposure to energy storage while reinforcing its appeal to investors seeking exposure to growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence and data centers. Expanding beyond solar The acquisition gives Nextracker a foothold in the fast-growing battery storage market, which is increasingly paired with solar projects to improve grid reliability and shift power generation to periods of peak demand. BNP Paribas compared Prevalon to Fluence Energy ( FLNC ), one of the largest publicly traded battery storage providers, but noted that Prevalon is roughly one-quarter of Fluence's size while generating stronger profitability. According to the firm, Prevalon currently produces earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization margins of about 10%, compared with negative margins at Fluence. Sutton said Nextracker's existing relationships with project owners, developers and engineering, procurement and construction contractors could help accelerate Prevalon's growth. The analyst also pointed to Nextracker's balance sheet strength as a competitive advantage in the storage sector, where projects often require significant working capital com...

Ruslan Lytvyn/iStock via Getty Images Hormuz Strait remains a key market uncertainty The closure/reopening of the Hormuz Strait remains as key market uncertainty and capturing headlines lately. To illustrate the point, the first news I saw this am when I first booted my computer is shown below as an example. Seeking Alpha News: Trump’s Hormuz 'deal sheet' drops, sending stocks higher. “The Hormuz Strait must be immediately open, no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic in both directions,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that the U.S. naval blockade around Iran “will now be lifted.” As the prices of major commodities and also stock indices rise and fall as the prospects of ceasefire negotiations evolve, this article wants to draw your attention to what is happening in another part of the world: Japan and South Korea. I will argue why what’s happening in these two countries can have larger and also longer-lasting impact on the SP500 index (or other major US equity indices such as the DJI , NASDAQ and RTY ). I further fee this argument has become timely as the equity market in both Japan and Korean’s are exhibiting elevated volatilities – again - lately. As a background and shown in the next chart below, equity market in South Korea suffered a historic " Black Wednesday " as the KOSPI ( KOSPI ) fell over 12% in intraday trading and trading halted across both major indices in the country. In the next month or so, the market remained under pressure and corrected as much as ~24% off the peak as approximately by the EWY ETF (which tracks the MSCI Korea 25/50 Index). The Japanese equity market suffered lower downward volatility in comparison, but the correction was still sizable at around 12% off the peak as measured by the EWJ ETF (which tracks the MSCI Japan index). Both markets started stabilizing since early April and recovered their lost ground by early May. The Korean market also gained quite a bit of new ground too. But volatility returned again. Particularly...
