watch now VIDEO 1:19 01:19 Job openings rise to 7.62 million in April, highest since May 2024 Squawk on the Street Job openings hit their highest level in nearly two years during April while hiring fell sharply, according to a government report Tuesday that showed rising demand but also slow hiring in the labor market. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that available employment hit 7.6 million for the month, a surge of 731,000 from the prior month and the highest level since May 2024. Economist surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for 6.8 million openings from the BLS' Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey . The jump in openings put the available jobs above the total of unemployed workers. The rate of openings compared to the size of the labor force rose 0.4 percentage point to 4.6%. By industry, nearly all of the openings came from the professional and business services category, which added 668,000 positions, a possible indicator of the impact from artificial intelligence on labor demand. Health care and social assistance, the greatest engine of job creation, added 89,000. Financial activities saw a decline of 134,000. Most other categories reported little change. While openings jumped, the hiring rate slipped. Companies hired a total 5.12 million workers during the month, a decline of 419,000 from March, taking the rate down to 3.2%, or a decline of 0.3 percentage point. However, layoffs and discharges fell slightly as well, down 192,000 to 1.7 million. Quits, a level of worker mobility and confidence in finding a new job, declined to just under 3 million, down 183,000 and the lowest level since August 2020. In broad terms, the report reflects the continuing low-hire low-fire environment that has characterized the labor market since early 2025. Weekly jobless claims have held low except for a brief spikes while the unemployment rate has barely budged at 4.3%. Federal Reserve officials watch the JOLTS numbers for signs of labor slack. Erik Isakson/DigitalVision via Getty Images I am even more positive about Super Micro Computer's ( SMCI ) outlook now following Nvidia's ( NVDA ) Computex event and GTC. The Vera Rubin launch makes SMCI a key player in the upcoming AI infrastructure cycle, whereas software, liquid-cooling solutions, and AI factory capabilities set a stage for higher margins ahead. With $40+ billion of revenue expected by 2026H2 and margins already improving, the fundamentals appear better than implied by the current market sentiment. Super Micro Just Showed Investors What's Next Super Micro's Q3 earnings call left the long-term thesis undamaged, but also more challenging. The bottom line is that SMCI's narrative shifted from being just a fast assembler of AI servers to an AI factory deployment partner. Vera Rubin's launch creates a strong argument for that story. By far the most important news came from SMCI's plans to offer blueprints of DCBBS for Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72 and HGX Rubin NVL8 systems. The designs will scale between 5MW to 1GW of deployments and will include compute, storage, networking, power, cooling, software and deployment services with deployments planned for 2026H2. According to Nvidia, Vera Rubin is already scaling into mass production for agentic AI factories, aligning with the SMCI roadmap. Super Micro Computer, Inc. 2026 Q3 - Results It is positive for the long term because the core idea behind Super Micro was always about speed-to-market advantages, which helped the company outperform traditional OEMs during the Blackwell cycle. However, margins suffered due to competition with hyperscalers on pricing, expedited orders, and component shortages. Vera Rubin is going to be a more complicated architecture with increased rack-level complexity. Liquid cooling, power efficiency, bandwidth, network connectivity, and deployment services become inseparable features of AI factories. Margins play the decisive role here, as discussed before, because SMCI needs to prove...

Douglas Rissing/iStock via Getty Images A biopharmaceutical company involved in developing drugs derived from cannabinoids, as well as several doctors and groups opposed to cannabis reform, have sued the Trump administration over its plans to reschedule marijuana as a Schedule III substance. In their lawsuit, plaintiffs argue that the Final Order signed by the DEA in April " was issued without prior notice-and-comment rulemaking…, without a formal hearing on the record…, without consultation of the recommendation of the Department of Health and Human Services ('HHS') on rescheduling, without consideration of the administrative process regarding rescheduling that was already in progress..." That order was signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who is named as a defendant, as is DEA Administrator Terrance Cole. The lawsuit, reported by Marijuana Moment and filed on May 28, frequently cites 21 U.S.C. 811 of the United States Code, a section dealing with the authority and criteria for classification of controlled substances. Plaintiffs further contend that the order did not adequately consider marijuana's health risks and is unlawful because marijuana would be placed into Schedule III while maintaining regulations that apply to it that are similar to those for Schedule I and II substances. Arturo Calderon/iStock via Getty Images Thesis Summary Micron ( MU ) has had a momentous rally in the last month. Just two months ago, the stock was trading at under $500, and I wrote then that I’d be looking to sell if we reached $1,000 in 2026. That day has come, and I am standing by my word. While earnings estimates have been revised, and MU could go higher from here, there are enough compelling reasons to sell. Concerns over the whole AI space, stretched technicals, and macro struggles are all lining up. This is a good time to take profit, and I am downgrading Micron to Sell. Revisiting My $1,000 Price Target Back on March 3rd, I laid out my $1,000 target based on an assessment of long-term growth, PE, and PEG. However, things have changed somewhat. MU EPS Estimates (SA) Back in March, EPS estimates for 2026 were around $33. This has now increased to just shy of $59, which is over a 70% increase. Now, if we were to apply a 30 PE to 2026 earnings, Micron could actually be worth close to $2,000. But earnings estimates aren’t the only thing that moves stocks, and as we've seen in the last 60 days, they can drastically change. Key Reasons I Am Selling I already highlighted some key reasons I would sell Micron in my last piece. A lot of these risk factors, and newer ones, have now emerged that make me even more cautious about Micron. The Shift in AI Spending While topline growth in AI continues to be strong and investors keep chasing the next AI bottleneck, the truth is that we’re already seeing AI users in the corporate space step back from spending. As I highlighted here , Uber ( UBER ) recently questioned whether their AI spending was actually profitable. Notably, Microsoft ( MSFT ) also recently pulled back its Claude Code license after saying its engineers were using it too much. AI demand may be peaking, at least for the time being, and perhaps more importantly, it may be shifting. Shifting Supply and Demand Micron has benefited from a squeeze in HBM prices, an...
