The vehicle will invest in local stocks and follows the opening of an office in Mexico City led by Rodrigo Blancas De Erice . The bureau, which currently has three people, will be “growing fast,” Blancas said in an interview. The size of the fund has yet to be determined. Local regulators recently cleared the way for Ashmore to raise capital from domestic clients and provide investment advice on assets. The new fund will target institutional investors, including pension funds, family offices and asset managers, Blancas said. The Afores, as the local pension funds are known, had 8.7 trillion pesos (nearly $500 billion) under management in April, which is expected to climb to 12 trillion pesos by 2030. “The Afores have been increasingly sophisticated in how they invest money, so they need partners with expertise and discipline and good investment processes,” said Blancas, Ashmore’s chief executive officer in Mexico. The Latin American country “is a very unique market where you need to be on the ground to get the best ideas and the best deals.” Exposure to just Mexican equities in Afores’ portfolios could total some $20 billion in the coming years, Blancas added. Though the firm is focused on its equities strategy in Mexico currently, it may consider offering additional products in other asset classes in the future, he said. London-based Ashmore managed $50.7 billion as of March 31, and focuses on external debt, local currency, corporate credit, equities and alternatives strategies, according to the firm’s website . In Latin America, its Colombia unit managed $2.3 billion as of September, according to its website .
