It was the first time background checks fell below 2M since last September. Background checks were down 6.5% on a year-over-year basis. The background checks have correlated closely to actual firearm sales in the past. The all-time high for firearm background checks was March 2021, when 4,691,738 firearm background checks were done in a single month. FBI firearm background checks then fell progressively later in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. Industry insiders expect firearm demand in 2026 to be slightly below, with macroeconomic headwinds such as inflation from tariffs, interest rates, and consumer spending pressure as the main risk rather than a collapse in underlying interest. The primaries will be the first time that California uses its new congressional map. The state passed Proposition 50 last year in response to Texas' redistricting that favored Republicans. The move could help California Democrats gain five House seats. In the spotlight is the race to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, who served two terms as California's governor and can't run again because of term limits. But the race has been chaotic, especially after former Rep. Eric Swalwell — widely viewed as a frontrunner — suspended his campaign in April as he was accused of sexual misconduct. Recent polls indicate Xavier Becerra, former Health and Human Services secretary, and billionaire philanthropist Tom Steyer are leading the Democratic primary. Others in the race are former Rep. Katie Porter and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host backed by President Donald Trump, and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco have emerged as leading candidates among Republicans. Notably, California has not elected a Republican governor since 2006. Palo Alto Networks Inc. , whose shares leaped 57% last month alone, releases its results after the market close on Tuesday. CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. , which soared 64% in May, reports on Wednesday. Both stocks are coming off their best months ever, trading at records after gaining more than 60% in 2026, and are among the 30 top performers in the S&P 500 Index this year. The gains are being fueled by broad enthusiasm for technology companies that are deemed artificial intelligence winners. And it marks a shift in sentiment from the start of the year, when cybersecurity shares broadly slumped on fears about potential disruption from Anthropic PBC’s Mythos model. “People came to their senses and realized, no, this is not going to stop people from buying security, it actually could create more demand for security,” said Jordan Klein , managing director at Mizuho Securities USA. If Wall Street sees solid numbers from Palo Alto and CrowdStrike this week, “it’s going to be off to the races.” Much of the cybersecurity group is running hot right now, making it one of the true bright spots in the tech landscape.
