William J. Pulte, Director of US Federal Housing FHFA, speaks to the press at The White House on Thursday, July 24, 2025. Sarah L. Voisin | The Washington Post | Getty Images President Donald Trump 's appointment of Bill Pulte to be the acting director of national intelligence will place the president's housing agency attack dog in possession of the country's most prized secrets, a move that analysts fear could further politicize the office and erode U.S. intelligence gathering. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, who oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, was tapped by Trump on Tuesday morning to replace the outgoing DNI Tulsi Gabbard . Pulte is not experienced in national intelligence and was an investor and executive of the home building firm PulteGroup before serving in government. As DNI, Pulte will be placed at the top of the U.S.' sprawling intelligence community and have access to the country's most sensitive national secrets. That lack of experience and Pulte's penchant for using information from the housing agencies to gin up prosecutions of Trump's political rivals has alarmed intelligence analysts and federal lawmakers alike, who warn Pulte could weaponize the office against the president's domestic political rivals and erode trust in U.S. intelligence. "It's the latest example of some of the amateurish, absurd assignments that Trump has made in the second term," said Brett Bruen, a former diplomat and National Security Council official under the Obama administration who now runs the firm Global Situation Room. "It opens up the very real possibility we could see our intelligence structures and systems further eroded, and the role of intelligence used in more inappropriate and even illegal ways." Bruen said the move will elevate Pulte from receiving "cafeteria-type sensitive information to the crown jewels of our most protected secrets." That includes access to highly sensitive intelligence collection efforts and information about human inte...

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (L) and Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt. Los Angeles Times | Getty Images Los Angeles voters are heading to the polls Tuesday to elect their next mayor, a race that has put all eyes on the nation's second-largest city . But if no one reaches more than 50% of the vote after all the ballots are counted, the top-two vote getters will head to a November runoff. Traders on prediction market platform Kalshi think the incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and insurgent former reality TV star Spencer Pratt are most likely to advance to the second round. Traders are fairly certain Bass will make it to the second round, giving her 93% odds. Bass has consistently led in public polls of the race, though has been well short of the 50% mark for an outright win in the first round. Pratt has about a three-in-four chance of advancing, according to traders. City Councilmember Nithya Raman is also challenging the incumbent. Raman has a 28% chance of advancing to the second round. Los Angeles mayoral elections are nonpartisan, though Pratt is a registered Republican, while Raman and Bass are Democrats. Traders once viewed Raman as the favorite to win the mayor's office, with nearly a 60% chance of victory at one point, though her odds collapsed on Kalshi after a May debate. Her chances of winning the whole race are now at just 11%. The fall was so notable that Pratt has made several comments about it on the campaign trail. "She went from 64% on Kalshi, to 8%," he said on Bill Maher's " Club Random " podcast. "So she got bombed, she's done." Pratt, though, only has a 25% chance of winning the mayor's office. Traders place 65% odds that Bass is re-elected. While Bass was seen as vulnerable after her approval ratings fell following her handling of wildfires that swept the city and surrounding region in 2025, Pratt's conservative-leaning politics could be a barrier to earning support from a majority of voters in a very blue city. Former Vice President Kamala H...

One way archaeologists learn how ancient people, including Neanderthals, did things is to attempt to do those things themselves, a process called experimental archaeology. Normally, that involves making stone tools, butchering deer, or distilling birch tar. But in a new study, it meant doing very destructive things to teeth from one of the world’s most carefully protected animals. That's because the archeologists suspected that Neanderthals once used rhino teeth as tools. By using the teeth to make stone tools, the researchers demonstrated that Neanderthals probably did the same thing, adding to what we know about the wide range of items in their toolkits. We need to hit some rhino teeth with rocks for science Some Neanderthal archaeological sites in Europe and Asia seem to have many more rhinoceros teeth lying around than you’d expect. We know Neanderthals hunted a now-extinct species of rhinoceros in Europe and eastern Asia, but the people who had inhabited these sites looked like they had been collecting rhino teeth for some reason. Dow ( DOW ) is using the Computex Taipei 2026 technology conference to showcase materials designed to address one of the biggest infrastructure challenges facing artificial intelligence computing: heat management, according to an announcement Tuesday. The company said it will present a range of cooling fluids, thermal interface materials and semiconductor packaging technologies aimed at improving heat dissipation in AI servers, data centers and advanced chip packaging systems. The products are part of Dow's broader effort to position itself as a supplier of specialty materials supporting the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. The focus on thermal management is increasingly relevant for investors as AI adoption drives demand for more powerful processors, denser server configurations and larger data centers. While much investor attention has centered on chipmakers and cloud providers, suppliers of specialty materials that improve reliability, efficiency and performance of AI systems stand to benefit from the industry's continued growth. For Dow, AI-related cooling and packaging technologies represent a potential avenue for expanding higher-value specialty materials sales beyond its traditional chemical markets. At the event, Dow plans to feature liquid cooling and immersion cooling technologies designed for high-performance computing environments. The company said its cooling fluids are intended to support thermal stability, corrosion protection and long-term operation in data center cooling systems. The company is also highlighting thermal interface materials used in AI servers, power modules and optical transceivers operating at increasingly high data transmission speeds. Effective thermal management has become more important as processors consume greater amounts of power and generate more heat. In addition to cooling technologies, Dow will showcase silicone-based materials used in advanced semiconductor packaging. These materials are designed to support heat tra...

Venezuela’s National Assembly will debate a reform that would open the country’s electricity sector to private investment, allowing companies to generate, distribute and sell power under government concessions after more than 15 years of state control. The proposal would permit private firms, mixed enterprises and companies with minority state ownership to operate in the sector alongside the state, according to draft legislation seen by Bloomberg. The bill also says it would establish tariffs designed to reflect the cost of providing service and allow operators a reasonable return on investment. Venezuela’s Information Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the draft. The power-sector overhaul follows a similar opening of Venezuela’s oil industry and underscores President Delcy Rodríguez’s effort to draw foreign investment into strategic industries after the US eased restrictions on the country. It also reflects growing concern that chronic electricity shortages have become a constraint on plans to increase oil and gas production. Also Read: Venezuela Wants Oil Firms to Supply Their Own Power for Projects Authorities are already moving to require energy companies to provide their own electricity generation for new oil and gas projects because the grid lacks the capacity and reliability needed to support increased production. Frequent outages have affected fields in the Orinoco Belt and the Lake Maracaibo region, contributing to production losses. Under the bill, the Energy Ministry would be able to grant concessions for as long as 25 years, with extensions of up to 15 additional years. The ministry would retain authority to revoke concessions or intervene in operators under certain circumstances. The draft legislation amends a law that established a state monopoly under utility Corp. Electrica Nacional , known as Corpoelec.

Morgan upgrades the building materials producer to Neutral from Underweight with a $225 price target, saying it now sees potential upside to cement demand as the year progresses while wallboard demand weakness likely troughed in Q4 2025. While JPM analyst Adrian Huerta says he expects continued weakness in wallboard volumes as residential demand remains subdued, he sees limited downside to earnings given an improving demand environment for cement and potential upside to pricing for materials. With Eagle Materials ( EXP ) shares currently trading at 10.8x estimated 2026 EV/EBITDA, compared to its historical average of 9.5x, the analyst sees valuation as fairly reasonable with limited downside to the share price. Overall in the Americas construction materials segment, Huerta says he is now optimistic about demand trend acceleration headed into the back half of the year, with demand trends to be supported by healthy infrastructure spending, robust data center growth, and improving demand for warehouses, distribution, and energy projects, even though a recovery in residential demand is not anticipated until 2027. In the group, Huerta's top picks are Cemex ( CX ), CRH ( CRH ), and Amrize ( AMRZ ). Aziz Shamuratov /iStock Editorial via Getty Images Emerson ( EMR ) on Tuesday said its Ovation Green supervisory control and data acquisition software is being used by Holy Cross Energy to monitor and manage renewable power generation across four facilities in western Colorado, highlighting growing demand for digital tools that support grid operations as renewable energy capacity expands. The High Mesa solar and battery energy storage system operates alongside Mamm Creek, Hunter, and Bronco Plains II facilities as part of Holy Cross Energy's digitally unified renewable network powered by Emerson's Ovation Green SCADA software. (Emerson) Holy Cross Energy, a member-owned electric cooperative serving parts of Colorado's mountain region, uses the software to oversee solar, wind and battery storage assets that help provide electricity to more than 45,000 members, roughly 52,000 households and 60,000 active meters. The cooperative's system has a peak load of approximately 300 megawatts. The deployment underscores a broader investment theme for Emerson ( EMR ) investors: utilities are increasingly spending on software, automation and grid management technologies to handle more complex energy systems that incorporate renewable generation and energy storage. As power providers add intermittent resources such as solar and wind, demand for monitoring, forecasting and control platforms could create recurring software and services opportunities for industrial technology companies like Emerson. According to the company, the software is used at the Mamm Creek, High Mesa, Hunter and Bronco Plains II facilities. Operators can monitor plant performance in real time and create schedules that manage power generation and battery storage output on an hourly basis. Holy Cross Energy relies on power purchase agreements with renewable energy providers to supply electricity to its members. Emerson said its platform consolidates operational data from multiple generation assets into a single ...
