Jensen Huang, NVIDIA founder and CEO, has a Q&A session at a press conference during the APEC CEO summit on October 31, 2025 in Gyeongju, South Korea. Woohae Cho | Getty Images News | Getty Images Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang may not be a member of K-pop band BTS, but the interest in his visit to South Korea has reached levels one might expect of a global celebrity. A website named "Jensen Huang's Footprints" in Korean shows a map and timeline of his expected locations and meetings over the four-day visit, which starts Friday. Meals of smoky Korean barbecue and soju drinking sessions are anticipated. Huang is set to appear on one of the country's most popular variety TV shows, "You Quiz on the Block," and will throw the first pitch at a Doosan Bears baseball game. That agenda isn't just for his amusement. Nvidia is looking to deepen its ties with South Korea as tech supply chains come into focus given the Iran war, and as the company faces rising regulatory hurdles in selling to the mainland Chinese market . A successful visit by the well-regarded CEO could be very helpful for the company's fortunes in the country. "Korea is a critical part of our ecosystem," Huang told reporters at a dinner with South Korean tech executives on the first day of the annual Computex trade show in Taipei. Look closer, and the business side is in focus for the Koreans as well. The Footprints website, which has drawn more than 80,000 visitors, displays the share-price moves of companies that are often associated with Nvidia. Potential meal partners include titans of the tech industry like SK Group's Chey Tae-won, LG Group's Koo Kwang-mo and Naver's Lee Hae-jin. Even at the baseball game, the chairman of the Doosan conglomerate that owns the Bears is set to join as a batter. Shares of South Korea's chip makers slipped on Friday despite the excitement over Huang's visit, tracking overnight losses in U.S. chip stocks following Broadcom 's downbeat earnings report. Index heavyweight Samsung Ele...
Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management said a larger or out-of-cycle Bank of Japan rate hike can’t be ruled out, warning that an expected increase this month may not be enough to prevent further declines in the yen and Japanese government bonds. “To stop yen weakness, 25 basis points is not enough,” said Masayuki Koguchi , executive chief fund manager at Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management, one of the nation...
Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management said a larger or out-of-cycle Bank of Japan rate hike can’t be ruled out, warning that an expected increase this month may not be enough to prevent further declines in the yen and Japanese government bonds. “To stop yen weakness, 25 basis points is not enough,” said Masayuki Koguchi , executive chief fund manager at Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management, one of the nation’s biggest investment firms. “If inflation starts to accelerate, there’s a chance that the BOJ could hike by 50 or 75 basis points at one meeting.” “The possibility of an out-of-cycle rate hike is also not zero depending on the external environment and fundamentals,” he said. Pressure on the yen and Japanese government bonds has been mounting amid concerns that the war in Iran will fuel inflation. While overnight index swaps are pricing in more than a 90% chance of a quarter-point BOJ rate hike this month, Koguchi said such a move alone would do little to improve market sentiment. “Yields will likely rise regardless of whether there’s a hike or not,” said Koguchi. “It wouldn’t be surprising if the yen went to 170,” even if the BOJ lifts its policy rate in June, he said. Japan’s bond yields climbed to multi-year highs last month, while the yen weakened beyond 160 per dollar this week to its lowest level since April 30 despite record government intervention to support the currency. BOJ officials are set to consider a quarter-point rate hike this month and see scope for another increase later this year, people familiar with the matter said. A rate increase of more than a quarter percentage point, or a move outside the BOJ’s scheduled policy meetings, would come as a major surprise to economists and investors. The last time the BOJ raised its policy rate by more than 25 basis points was in August 1990, when it delivered a 75-basis-point hike during Japan’s asset bubble. The central bank has not raised rates outside scheduled meetings since introducing a fixed policy meeting cal...
