France's competition authority on Wednesday ordered Meta Platforms to resume talks with French media groups over payments for publishing content, after the publishers complained following the collapse of previous negotiations. The case is one of a growing number between publishers and tech companies over the use of content published on social media or used for AI training that have triggered litigation. The French authority said it found the practices employed by Meta in its methods of calculating fees were likely to constitute an abuse of its dominant position, and it ordered the Facebook owner to put forward details of its payment plan within 15 days.

wildpixel/iStock via Getty Images Intro Our last commentary on Algoma Steel Group Inc. ( ASTL ) was in November last year when we downgraded the stock to a 'Sell.' Since 2024, the stock has been undergoing a series of aggressive lower highs and lower lows, which have yet to dissipate. Even though the carnage came to a halt last year, shares look like they are on course to visit those lows once more, as we see below. Management is trying to sell investors on the fact that steel-related US tariffs have accelerated Algoma's plate transition, where the company's cost of production is expected to significantly improve once the ramp-up of its EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) gains traction in earnest. Furthermore, the fact that Algoma remains the sole producer of discrete plates in Canada is noteworthy, in that the company has had few problems in bolstering its liquidity through government funding, etc. Suffice it to say, now that Algoma has been effectively priced out of the US market (where its blast furnaces have been decommissioned as a result), there seems to be a 'siege mentality' at play regarding efforts to keep Algoma highly relevant in Canada's industrial sector. The company's move to EAF, however, (helping the company's carbon footprint) does not guarantee a return to its former glory. Ultimately, being a high fixed-cost business (whatever way you dress it up), means Algoma requires scale to generate profits. Until we see a clear B-Line to this, we will maintain our bearish rating in this play. Algoma 5-Year Technical Chart ( stockcharts.com ) Q1 Earnings Report Algoma's latest quarterly report was on the 12th of May this year, which was its first quarter numbers for its present fiscal year. The company missed consensus estimates in both the top and bottom lines. Net tonnes of 224k were significantly down on Q1 in fiscal 2025 due to a stark decrease in its legacy blast furnace operations, which ceased operations on the 18th of January this year. Despite the significa...
