The new funding includes up to $33.4M for East Bend Station in Kentucky and up to $28.4M for Roxboro Station units 2 and 3 in North Carolina; combined with a previously announced $34M grant for the Belews Creek Steam Station in North Carolina, total DoE funding for Duke Energy ( DUK ) projects at these sites reaches nearly $96M. The news follows the company's recent announcements outlining billions in customer savings, including last week's news that Duke Energy Florida ( DUK ) is implementing its third rate reduction of 2026 from June through September, lowering residential customer bills by ~$50, or 25%, when compared to January, for every 1,000 kWh of energy used. The grant funding is part of President Trump's invoking of the Defense Production Act to direct hundreds of millions of dollars to support U.S. coal-fired power plants and coal exports.
