Remote work is likely the main cause of a surge in youth unemployment, a report this month by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found. The National Bureau of Economic Research has also found, in a paper updated this month, that the rise in remote work makes it harder for younger workers to get feedback and advance. "Early in your career, a significant amount of learning comes via observation and osmosis: watching how colleagues run meetings, navigate conflict, build relationships and make important decisions," said Megan Hellerer, an executive coach and the author of " Directional Living ." "Those moments are challenging to replicate over Slack or Zoom." Fully remote early in the career is ideally avoided. Speaking in a television interview on Thursday, Ambassador Joshua Zarka said he would rather see any candidate elected to the Elysee Palace than Melenchon, the leader of the left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI), a strong supporter of Palestinian rights . Since our last update , E.ON shares have risen by 10%, and in the meantime, the company has reported its Q4 2025 and Q1 2026 results, so we will briefly comment on the financials. For our new readers, we moved the company's rating to a neutral view because the regulatory framework for German networks remains unresolved, and key return parameters are still under discussion. Additionally, E.ON was trading broadly in line with peers, but had higher debt and a lower dividend yield. For this reason, we reiterated our neutral recommendation. Mare Ev. Lab rating update Fig 1 Why are we still neutral? Since our last update, the key development is that the German regulator (Bundesnetzagentur) has formally moved forward with the NEST framework. This means that it will replace the old incentive model with a more explicit WACC-based methodology. Wall Street assumes that Germany cannot achieve its electrification targets without an improvement in network return. Therefore, we see a better risk-reward in holding E.ON. Even if the debate has shifted from whether returns should improve to how much they should improve, we are still asking, "Does the new allowed return reflect today's financing costs and the massive network investment cycle required for electrification?" In the FY 2025 results, the company increased its CAPEX investment to €48 billion by 2030, with approximately €40 billion allocated to regulated networks. That said, our question is partially unresolved. This delay has at least two relevant consequences: 1) higher refinancing costs and 2) potential CAPEX timing effects. It doesn't mean trimming down investments that might exhibit large price swings, as the entire essence of passive income-enabled financial freedom is to fund a lifestyle without touching the principal. Instead, derisking should be executed for those investments that carry elevated probabilities of permanent value destruction and major distribution reductions. When things get shaky, demand drops, access to capital (both credit and equity) fades, and businesses that operate with no meaningful margin of safety might have to pay a painful price for "swimming naked". The first place where investors could try to separate the wheat from the chaff is the one that is packed with high-yielding instruments, say the 10%+ zone. Based on the chatter in the media, my guess would be that investors could make some preemptive changes in their large-cap technology, QQQ , and private credit, BIZD buckets. The former is priced to perfection and embodies a high beta factor (i.e., will fall deep in case of a system-wide correction). The list of reasons for avoiding the latter is almost endless, but even conceptually, when things go south in the economy, private credit is not the area in which to be heavily concentrated. However, I think that there are certain high-yielding assets that should be kept in retirement income portfolios (investor portfolios who want to live off durable income) irrespective of where we are in the cycle. Let me elaborate on two such (11%+ yielding) examples. #1: IAUI, 12.3% My first pick that I would recommend that investors keep in their portfolios is the NEOS Gold High Income ETF ( IAUI ). One of them was You Can Be a Stock Market Genius by Joel Greenblatt. This is one of my favourite investment books, and it's about special situations. Loeb in the interview and Greenblatt in the book talk about valuation creation when there's a big corporate transaction. One area is when a conglomerate begins to break up, which unlocks the conglomerate discount found in many large diversified companies. One conglomerate that is in going through a transformation is the French group Bolloré SE ( BOIVF ). Listed in Paris, Bolloré was in American news recently as the firm is the largest shareholder in Universal Music Group, which just rejected a buyout bid from Bill Ackman's Pershing Square. According to the Wall Street Journal, Ackman told investors “without Bollore, we don’t have a transaction.” This article is about why Bolloré SE is undervalued and is itself a special situation, in the classic Greenblatt sense. The Bolloré Group The Bolloré Group, which according to its website celebrated its two hundredth anniversary in 2022, is majority controlled by the Bolloré family. The company, Bolloré SE is a mid-cap listed in Paris, and is not a constituent of France's benchmark CAC 40 index. The family however are one of the tycoon business families in France, with head of the family Vincent Bolloré comfortably making the Forbes list . The group was really diversified, but in recent years several big transactions have simplified the business and it appears it is not quite over yet. Currently the group has three segments: oil logistics, Communications, and Industry. We'll come back to those a bit later. In 2022 and 2024, Bolloré sold a couple of logistics businesses for just over €10 billion in cash.
