Janina Steinmetz/DigitalVision via Getty Images When it comes to passive and/or retirement income investing, usually the primary objective is to ensure a sufficient "income and expense" matching. Preferably, you also want to have a reasonable margin of safety in place just to account for such dynamics as unexpected expense items, inflation surges, dividend reductions, etc. There are a couple of ways to integrate a margin of safety lever in our portfolios: A) High-yield investing: relaxes the requirement for savings but comes with a higher income cut risk. B) Core yield investing: requires more savings but mitigates income cut risk. C) Yield growth investing: requires even more capital to move the needle in the short-term but enables a decent compounding within the margin of safety aspect itself (e.g., over time this income growth can more than offset inflationary pressures or smooth out the portfolio income proceeds, which otherwise might experience hiccups from unexpected cuts). In my opinion, the ultimate dream scenario is to lean into "Category A" while assuming the equivalent risks to "Category B", i.e., high yield, very minimal chances of a cut, or NAV erosion. Another juicy success would be to lock in decent initial yields from "Category C" investments while still keeping the income growth element in place. Here the discussion about risk is shifted away from potential income cuts (as it would be for "Category A") to whether the future income growth will be enough to compensate for experiencing a yield drag from the get-go. All these levers play an important role in the context of truly durable income investing. The primary benefit is diversification. Granted, it might dilute our exposures to ultra high conviction picks and thus limit a potential upside case. However, as long as the investment objective function remains tied to income and income only, then the diversification is really beneficial (reducing the portfolio income risk and the consequences of some ...

State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEMKT:XLK) provides broad technology exposure at a significantly lower cost, while iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) offers a concentrated, higher-volatility play specifically on the semiconductor industry. Both funds serve as primary vehicles for tech-heavy portfolios but differ sharply in their scope. While SOXX isolates the semiconductor sub-sector, XLK captures the wider S&P 500 technology landscape. Choosing between them may depend on whether an investor seeks pure-play chip exposure or diversified software and hardware giants. Beta measures price volatility relative to the S&P 500; beta is calculated from five-year monthly returns. The 1-yr return represents total return over the trailing 12 months. aprott/iStock via Getty Images Employers are increasingly limiting or eliminating coverage for popular weight-loss drugs such as Novo Nordisk's ( NVO )( NONOF ) Wegovy and Eli Lilly's ( LLY ) Zepbound as the rapid growth in demand drives up healthcare costs, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday. Large employers including Cigna ( CI ) and PricewaterhouseCoopers have reduced coverage for GLP-1 medications used to treat obesity, while others have introduced stricter requirements for employees seeking reimbursement. Those measures can include regular weigh-ins, nutrition coaching and tracking food intake through mobile apps. According to new data from benefits consulting firm Mercer, 11% of large employers have either dropped or plan to drop coverage for GLP-1 drugs prescribed for weight loss, while more than a quarter are tightening utilization controls. Nearly half of surveyed employers still don’t cover the medications for obesity treatment. The pullback reflects growing concern over the financial effect of the drugs. Healthcare provider HCA Healthcare ( HCA ) discontinued coverage for weight-loss use this year after GLP-1 utilization among employees surged in 2025. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts also removed obesity-treatment coverage from its standard employer plans, citing projections that spending on the medications could approach $1 billion this year. At the same time, employers face competing pressures. Surveys show many workers view GLP-1 coverage as a valuable benefit, with roughly 30% of employees saying they would consider changing jobs to gain access to the medications. Some companies continue to support broader coverage, arguing that the drugs may lower long-term healthcare costs by reducing obesity-related illnesses and hospitalizations. Research published by Aon in January found that GLP-1 users experienced slower medical-cost growth and fewer hospital stays after about 18 months of treatment. For investors, the growing pushback from emplo...

She joined the soap in 1993, and after leaving in 2007, she returned several times before making her final exit in April 2025. As well as theatre work, Cassidy has appeared in TV shows including Psychoville, Motherland and Boarders. She hosts the podcast Life With Nat and co-hosts Off the Telly. Natalie Cassidy: Caring Together is on BBC One and iPlayer now. This was taken on the freezing cold set of EastEnders when I was 13. It was Sonia’s mum’s wedding, so they’d given her a trumpet to play at the ceremony. A genius idea from the writers, as the trumpet brought light and comedy to the role. Sadly, like most soap characters, she got downtrodden over the years. Humour has a tendency to fade after a long time on Albert Square. Continue reading...
