At a recent Repair Cafe event in New Paltz, New York, volunteers helped residents fix everything from lamps and clothing to antique clocks and electronics. The free gatherings pair skilled repairers with neighbors looking to extend the life of everyday possessions while learning new skills. Founded in the Netherlands in 2009, the Repair Cafe network has expanded to more than 4,000 locations worldwide, with roughly 850,000 items repaired annually. Organizers say the goal is not only to reduce waste but also to change attitudes toward consumption. The movement is part of a broader trend that includes tool-sharing libraries, "right to repair" initiatives and community exchange networks such as the Buy Nothing Project. Supporters argue that repairing, borrowing and sharing can reduce costs while strengthening local connections. At the New Paltz event, about 50 people brought in 85 items. Volunteers successfully repaired 71, while a handful required additional work or were deemed beyond repair. Advocates say modern consumers often lack repair skills that were once commonplace, making replacement the easier option. Community repair efforts help bridge that gap by providing expertise at little or no cost. The "right to repair" movement has gained traction in recent years, pushing manufacturers to provide consumers and independent repair shops with access to tools, parts and repair information. Several states have already enacted related legislation. For many participants, however, the appeal goes beyond saving money. A new game starring the purple dragon was announced at tonight’s Xbox Game Showcase – the first original title since 2008. Called Spyro: Realms Beyond, it is being developed by studio Toys for Bob in California and will be released in spring 2027 on Xbox, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It features a freshly redesigned Spyro with his trademark quiff, voiced by Tom Kenny, the original star of the games. Unlike in the original Spyro titles, players will be able to take flight at any time. “[We’re] leaning into the true capabilities of being a dragon,” explains creative director Lou Studdert. “It’s really engaging … the player is making decisions how they fly. Delta's new president, Peter Carter, says that just won't stand. "We want to become stronger, better, faster in the trans-Pacific, and we want to become the leading U.S. carrier" across the Pacific, Carter told CNBC in an interview here during the International Air Transport Association's annual meeting. "Ultimately ... the real goal is to become the leading global carrier, which is a pretty audacious goal." Carter, who was promoted in March, said some of that will come from Delta's joint venture with Korean Air, which is merging with Asiana Airlines. Delta posted a net profit of more than $5 billion last year, compared with United's earnings of about $3.35 billion. However, for its trans-Pacific business, Delta's smaller network generated just $2.79 billion in revenue, compared with United's roughly $6.89 billion, according to company filings. Trans-Pacific flying is often highly profitable, with long-haul flights commanding a premium and served by planes with dozens of premium seats. Both carriers are adding new routes. Earlier this month, Delta launched nonstop service between Los Angeles and Hong Kong. United Airlines, meanwhile, is planning a nonstop between its San Francisco hub and Sapporo, Japan — a play for premium-ski traffic.
