Energy infrastructure investments often focus on master limited partnerships (MLPs) that transport and store oil and gas. While AMLP concentrates specifically on these tax-advantaged structures, MLPX blends MLPs with general energy infrastructure corporations, resulting in distinct risk-reward profiles and tax considerations for income-seeking investors. krblokhin/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Raytheon, a business of RTX ( RTX ), said Monday it will invest $100 million to expand its facility in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, increasing production capacity for missile-defense systems and accelerating testing of a key next-generation radar program. The project will bring 150 high-tech jobs to the state. The investment will support expanded testing of the U.S. Army's Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor, or LTAMDS, and increase production of components used in the Patriot Advanced Capability-2 Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical, known as GEM-T. The expansion comes as demand for air and missile defense systems rises globally amid growing security concerns in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Defense contractors have been increasing manufacturing capacity to address large order backlogs and support modernization efforts by the United States and allied nations. Raytheon said the project will increase testing capacity for LTAMDS, a radar designed to detect and track advanced threats, including hypersonic weapons. The company is currently under contract to supply LTAMDS radars to the U.S. Army and Poland. The radar program recently completed its ninth flight test, during which multiple radar arrays were used to track and support the interception of a target designed to simulate an airborne threat. The Portsmouth expansion will also boost production of GEM-T missile components. The interceptor is one of the missiles used by the Patriot air and missile defense system and is designed to engage aircraft, cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles. The announcement follows a separate $53 million expansion project Raytheon launched last year at its radar production facility in Andover, Massachusetts. RTX and its predecessor companies have operated in Rhode Island for more than six decades. The company said it currently employs more than 850 people in the state. The Portsmouth facility supports several defense programs, i...
