Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., speaks during the news conference following the House Republican Conference caucus meeting at the Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Bill Clark | CQ-Roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images The U.S. House is poised to vote to on a $70 billion package to fund immigration enforcement agencies and, after months of partisan fighting, send the measure to President Donald Trump 's desk. The package would fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, two Department of Homeland Security subagencies left out of an earlier spending bill amid Democratic opposition, and bring to an end a drawn-out debate over immigration enforcement policy that began in January and led to a government shutdown. A final House vote to pass the immigration funding package could come as soon as Tuesday. The Senate passed the package early Friday morning on a 52-47 vote. It would fund the immigration enforcement agencies through the end of Trump's presidency. Sen. Lisa Murkowski , R-Alaska, was the lone Republican to vote against it. "We were forced to use the reconciliation process because Democrats objected – during the appropriations process – to giving any money to Border Patrol and ICE, effectively shutting our border security down at a time of growing threats to the nation," Sen. Lindsey Graham , R-S.C., chair of the Senate budget panel, said in a statement on Friday after the measure passed. Graham was referring to the budget reconciliation process, which allows for the passage of legislation in the Senate on a party-line vote. "In less than two years, President Trump has taken the border from the most broken to the most secure in history. The bill we passed today locks those gains in through the rest of his term," Graham continued. Read more CNBC politics coverage Michael Dell courted Trump early. Aliaksandr Litviniuk/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Italy's Eni ( E ) and Malaysia's state energy company Petronas announced Monday the creation of a new 50-50 joint venture combining key businesses across Indonesia and Malaysia, part of Eni's satellite strategy to spin off specific assets and develop them separately with the help of a partner. The new company, named Searah, will start with a portfolio of 19 gas-producing and development assets—14 in Indonesia and 5 in Malaysia—with an initial production base of ~300K boe/day that will target more than 500K boe/day of production within the next three years, the companies said. Searah has secured a $6B revolving credit facility to fund its growth plans, which are expected to include more than $20B of spending over the next five years to support the development of more than 3B boe of discovered resources and unlock additional exploration opportunities. The JV will generate significant synergies, particularly in logistics and technology, the two companies said. "Searah is a strong new entity in Southeast Asia, combining our expertise with that of Petronas to support the development of energy resources in Indonesia and Malaysia, with a strong commitment to environmental protection and local growth," Eni ( E ) CEO Claudio Descalzi said. Alexey_Fedoren Mizuho raised the price targets on Sandisk ( SNDK ), Seagate Technology ( STX ), and Western Digital ( WDC ) as it continues to see AI driving a supply-demand imbalance in the memory market. In addition, the firm highlighted upsides for Broadcom ( AVGO ) and Micron Technology ( MU ). The firm increased Sandisk's price target to $2,200 from $1,825, Seagate's price target to $1,090 from $875, and Western Digital to $685 from $550. Mizuho maintained its Outperform rating on all three stocks. "We continue to see AI as the driving force behind the supply demand imbalance in the memory market, as we note increasing demand in 2027/28E could add further pressure to the market. We continue to see 2026/27E DRAM wafer starts up 10%/up 6% y/y, driven mostly by increasing HBM demand, though we note the higher HBM trade ratio limits growth, while we estimate demand growing 27%/24% y/y, respectively. Within NAND, we note eSSD as the key driver of demand, as we estimate 2026/27E total NAND demand growing 18%/18% y/y, while wafer starts are estimated down 5%/up 3% y/y as we see no significant supply online until 2028E," said analysts led by Vijay Rakesh. The analysts said that they hosted their quarterly AI Application-Specific Integrated Circuit, or ASIC, roadmap call and noted key updates. The analysts said that their call noted a potential more than 35M Google's ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ) Tensor Processing Units, or TPU shipments in 2028E (up eight times from 2026 about 4.3M, and 2025 around 2.4M), as Google looks to scale TPU externally with Anthropic and others. The analysts noted that it is significantly above their estimates of about 7M ASIC shipments for Broadcom, implying significant upside. Additionally, the analysts noted that Broadcom could see 50M total TPU shipments from 2026 to 2028, which provide some upside alongside accelerating demand for Meta ( META ) Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, or MTIA, v3/4/5 and OpenAI's upcoming ASIC, which Broadcom will b...

The idea of controlling machines with one’s mind used to be a staple of a certain kind of science fiction. Now it’s quickly becoming reality. Implantable brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, have empowered disabled individuals to browse the internet, move robotic arms and transcribe some of their thoughts into text. As rapid advances in hardware and artificial intelligence fuel further technological breakthroughs, companies are paving the way for such devices to be used more broadly. A group of startups in China are leading the charge. With backing from the state, they are catching up to western companies like Elon Musk’s Neuralink. On this episode of Bloomberg Primer , we meet one of the first Chinese patients to receive a brain-chip implant, and take a look inside companies that could be central to Beijing’s goal of being a world leader in brain technology by 2030. China’s approach to brain technology comes from the same industrial playbook that has propelled domestic industries like electric vehicles to global dominance. The national roadmap calls for removing red tape to speed development and testing, spurring a wave of clinical trials to prove that such intrusive devices are safe and effective. This year, shortly after it officially designated BCI as one of six strategic future industries, China approved its first invasive BCI for commercial use. At its best, BCI technology promises to restore autonomy for millions of people who have lost it, whether due to paralysis, blindness, hearing loss or other medical conditions. By shedding light on the inner workings of the human brain, some hope BCI technology may lead to new forms of AI or allow for augmented human abilities — the latter raising thorny ethical concerns that, like BCI, used to be the exclusive province of fiction. On this episode of Bloomberg Primer , we explore this new stage of the technology, its potential to someday conjure medical miracles — and the dystopian risks of its misuse. Read More: China’...

Trial suggests monoclonal antibody can help retain lean body mass when losing weight with GLP-1 medicines A drug that promotes muscle growth could significantly reduce the loss of lean body mass when using slimming jabs, research suggests. While GLP-1 based jabs such as Wegovy and Mounjaro have proved highly effective at helping people who are overweight or obese, experts have warned it is not only fat that is lost. Studies suggest 25-40% of total weight loss is down to a reduction in lean body mass – non-fat components of the body, including muscle. Continue reading...

Launchers that shoot ‘bullet-like missiles’, chemical irritants and stinger grenades: experts say these weapons can cause serious injury or even death. But they are deployed by police against crowds with little scrutiny Projectiles that release powder designed to burn the eyes and throat. Flashbang grenades. Teargas. Launchers that resemble semi-automatic rifles. In Victoria, police have refused to publicly provide the make and model of their rubber bullets and other weapons even to the state’s parliamentarians due to “operational and community safety considerations”. Contracts worth millions for these weapons are often with third-party distributors rather than the manufacturers, obscuring what police have access to. During coronial inquests, after baton rounds and other weapons may have contributed to deaths, Victoria police have sought suppression orders that bar media from describing any details of weaponry. In some states, details about Tasers have been suppressed during inquests, including the training materials given to officers. Guardian Australia approached each force in the country for a list of the manufacturer and model of their less lethal weapons but all declined to provide one, with most citing operational safety. Robert Nickelsberg | Getty Images U.S. households grew more worried over their financial situation, with the share of those seeing things as much worse than they were 12 months ago hitting a nearly four-year high, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of New York survey. While the central bank's monthly Survey of Consumer Expectations, released Monday, showed the inflation outlook mostly unchanged, the general perception of conditions deteriorated. The share of those seeing their current situation as "much worse" than a year ago leaped to 13.3%, up about 2.7 percentage points from April and the highest since July 2022. The total of those seeing either a much or somewhat worse situation from a year ago stood at 43.7%, which the New York Fed said was the highest since January 2023. At the same time, the outlook for the coming year wasn't any better. Those expecting their situations to be either much or somewhat worse totaled 36%, while those seeing things improving totaled just 22.9%. The net between those seeing better versus worse conditions hit its lowest since October 2022, the New York Fed said in the release. Inflationary impact The survey comes with consumers fearful over the inflationary impact from the Iran war, which has sent energy prices soaring. Some Fed policymakers recently have expressed worry that if the conflict persists it could raise inflation expectations among consumers and businesses, making the problem longer term than the typical temporary impact from supply shocks. However, the survey showed consumer worries about prices virtually unchanged. Inflation expectations at the one-year horizon rose just 0.1 percentage point, to 3.5%. The outlook at the three- and five-year time frames held flat at 3.1% and 3%, respectively. Expectations for gasoline prices actually dropped 0.1 percentage point to 5%, while the outlook for food rose 0.6 percen...

Neither company has obtained approval for their air taxis just yet, and both contain sizable long-term risks.
