Citadel Securities LLC , the market-making firm founded by billionaire Ken Griffin , is hiring more engineers and traders in India, as it seeks to expand in one of the world’s fastest-growing financial markets. The Miami-based company is beefing up its India operations by hiring former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Vice President Umang Mavani as an India-based systematic trader and recruiting engineers Raghu Teja Penmetsa from LinkedIn Corp. and Saloni Das from Nutanix Inc., the firm said. “We have two priorities in India, first is to grow our local business, second is to tap into the large and high-quality talent pool in India,” said Prakash Subramanian , head of South Asia and Singapore, Citadel Securities, in an interview. Subramanian, who was appointed to the role in April, said the firm is bullish on Indian talent not just for local roles, but also for global operations. As part of its growing footprint in the South Asian nation, Citadel Securities opened its first India capital market focused research facility for students last week at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay . The lab will conduct student-led research projects designed for the Indian markets, Subramanian said. Opening of the lab underscores India’s importance as a key regional market for Citadel Securities driven by its young, technology-savvy population and large talent pool. Other senior officials at the firm also highlighted the growing interest in India. Alex DiLeonardo , chief people officer at Citadel Securities, said in an emailed statement that applications from Indian students for the firm’s global internship program have grown more than 4.5 times over the past three years. Gustaf Ericson, India chief operating officer at Citadel Securities said trading cash equities is a focus for the firm, even as it grows its futures and options business. Last year, the company said it was planning an entry into the commodities segment. It picked up a stake in India’s National Commodity and Derivativ...
