South Korea is set to crack down on speculative foreign-exchange trading, with regulators planning on-site inspections and investigations into suspected market-disruptive activities, the finance ministry said. Authorities will target transactions aimed at distorting the market and carry out field inspections this week, examining whether participants are taking part in speculative deals, Moon Ji-sung, deputy finance minister for international affairs, said in a statement. The government regards the current situation as grave and is closely monitoring market trends and major order flows in coordination with other agencies, the statement added. The plan was outlined during the ministry’s meeting with currency-market participants and experts, following an emergency market review held over the weekend. The latest efforts come after the South Korean government and financial regulators held a meeting with the banking industry on Monday to discuss matters related to foreign exchange. The won rose as much as 1.2% to 1,509.50 on Tuesday following a 2% rally the previous session as authorities reiterated their pledge to rein in the currency’s weakness and probe speculative trading.

Over the 12 months to March 31, the fund outperformed with a 25.86% gain, versus the index return of 24.91%. Various economic and market indicators pointed to both challenges and resilience across major economies and markets in the first quarter of the year. The broad impact from the conflict with Iran are reverberating from the supply shocks in energy, fertilizer, sulfur and helium markets. The longer the conflict lasts, the greater the economic fallout as input costs in sundry sectors rise. Some countries and regions are better prepared or insulated than others, in part given the energy shock that roiled Europe four years ago, when Russia invaded Ukraine. The price impacts from the virtual closure of the Strait of Hormuz have caused inflation fears to rise and an about-face among most major central banks, which had been expected to pursue, or continue with, policy easing this year. But the potential inflationary impact from the energy and other primary resources stranded by the conflict behind the strait may prompt policy makers into a more hawkish stance. Higher energy costs and a rising cost of capital due to policy rate hikes make for headwinds to economic growth. While such a geopolitical crisis usually triggers a “flight to safety, ” lowering long sovereign bond yields of leading developed economies, the conflict with Iran has effectively acted as a potentially major “growth tax” and inflation spike, forcing markets to price in higher-for-longer interest rates. Long sovereign yields have been drifting higher or hovering at elevated levels in the U.S., Japan and Europe. The U.S. dollar has rebounded strongly against its major peers, sharply reversing a weakening trend in 2025. Our active positioning has e...
