Thirteen. At the earliest. That’s when parents should consider getting their child a smartphone, according to a new study published in JAMA Pediatrics. Parents are often told to wait until their children hit the teen years to give them their first phone, as research continues to roll in showing health worries tied to young people’s social media habits. The new findings back up conventional wisdom, showing a delay of even one year can lead to measurably better mental and physical health. “Age 13 seems safer,” said Ran Barzilay , an adolescent psychiatrist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the senior author of the paper. “Even then, make sure that you put some boundary on the amount of time that the kid is on the screen.” Getting a phone at 13 wasn’t associated with depression or obesity, according to the analysis of health and data usage for nearly 2,000 kids. It was linked to poor sleep, however. Previous research from the same team showed that 12-year-olds with phones had a higher risk of depression, obesity and insufficient sleep. Boundaries should include the amount of time kids spend on their phone, and when they use it, Barzilay said. Teens who spent more than five hours a day on their phone had more than double the risk of depression, obesity and insufficient sleep within a year of getting it, he said. Even the risk of not sleeping enough can be curtailed by having the kids keep their phones outside of the bedroom, he said. “This is a very straightforward intervention or behavioral modification that can make a big difference,” Barzilay said. Others have opted for “dumb phone” alternatives like the Tin Can. Policymakers have also begun to take notice. Last year, Australia banned kids under sixteen from holding social media accounts, prompting other countr...

(This is The Best Stocks in the Market , brought to you by Josh Brown and Sean Russo of Ritholtz Wealth Management.) Josh — I'm old enough to remember when people were bullish on Prologis (PLD) because of its reputation as "the landlord of e-commerce" circa 2021. I was trading the stock back then for this exact reason. When Amazon and every other retailer needed warehouse space close to consumers, Prologis had the locations, the scale, and the relationships. That story hasn't gone away, but there's a new one running alongside it. The company is now pushing aggressively into data centers, using both conversions of existing warehouses and greenfield developments, with publicly stated ambitions to scale data center capacity to as much as 10 gigawatts over the next decade. Corporate customers tied to U.S. data center construction are making up an increasing share of Prologis's forward-looking pipeline, as suppliers move their distribution centers closer to data center developments. The world's largest industrial REIT is quietly becoming a digital infrastructure company, and most investors still have it filed under "e-commerce warehouses." The benefit of doing our Best Stocks in the Market research is that it forces me to ask why a stock in the "wrong" sector might be among the market's leaders when most people just hear the name and ticker and revert back to their previously held biases. "Oh, Prologis, that's that ecommerce REIT I used to hear about during Covid." Guess again, fat boy. New era, new fundamental driver. Sean's going to explain to you why Prologis and another REIT everyone thinks they understand, Simon Property Group (SPG) , are acting well this year despite everyone's concerns over higher interest rates - a well understood negative catalyst for most of the sector. We're also going to lace you with the usual Monday morning high-level stats from the rest of the list. On a personal note, I want to thank you for understanding our absence last week. I promised...

The United States faces a huge supply chain vulnerability regarding rare-earth elements. That's because China controls up to 90% of the processing of these rare-earth elements, according to research by The Motley Fool . The federal government has taken an active role in bolstering rare-earth mining and processing and has invested in two companies, MP Materials (NYSE: MP) and USA Rare Earth (NASDAQ: USAR) , to bolster its capabilities. The two companies are expanding their capabilities for mining and processing rare-earth elements and manufacturing refined magnets, which are critical for defense, aerospace, and technological applications. If you're considering investing in the budding U.S. rare-earth industry, one of these companies stands out as a better investment right now. Image source: Getty Images. Continue reading

Saylor's Strategy Buys The Dip As Bitcoin Nears Mining Cost Floor A week after SELLING 32 Bitcoin - and (in part) triggering a waterfall decline in crypto - Bitcoin treasury company Strategy just BOUGHT an additional 1,550 BTC for approximately $101.3 million at an average price of $65,332 per bitcoin between June 1 and June 7, according to an 8-K filing with the SEC on Monday. Strategy now holds a total of 845,256 BTC - worth around $53.5 billion - bought at an average price of $75,680 per bitcoin for a total cost of around $64 billion, including fees and expenses, according to the company's co-founder and executive chairman, Michael Saylor . This means Saylor's horde represents 4% of bitcoin's 21 million supply cap. Was Saylor's 'sale' last week designed to lower the price for this big purchase? Bitcoin had been trading for around $73,700 before the sale announcement. However, the news, despite increasingly being flagged by the company as a possibility in recent weeks, saw the market subsequently drop around 20% to a low of roughly $59,300 on Friday, before recovering back above the $63,000 level over the weekend. Last week, JPMorgan analysts said Strategy's recent decision to sell 32 BTC "spooked" markets even if the sale was "symbolic and voluntary," intended to demonstrate the company's commitment and flexibility to preferred stockholders. As TheBlock.co reports , Saylor posted another Strategy bitcoin acquisition tracker chart on Sunday with the caption "A good time to add more dots," a commonly-understood signal that the largest corporate bitcoin holder may disclose fresh bitcoin purchases this week. The framing this time went further than the usual nod toward another buy, in that it explicitly positioned current price levels as attractive , with bitcoin trading in the low $60,000 range. Following bitcoin's worst week in two years , Strategy(MSTR) Executive Chairman Michael Saylor published a framework on X , arguing that the Bitcoin community is evolving int...

NoDerog With its portfolio at an “inflection” point and sales in its Helly Hansen brand seen “breaking out” with double-digit growth, Kontoor Brands ( KTB ) was initiated with an Overweight rating and $90 price target at J.P. Morgan. The price target assumes 30% upside to Friday’s closing price. “We see the portfolio at an inflection point to accelerate growth into FY27 with a narrowed focus on function-based brands consisting of Wrangler and Helly Hansen,” said analyst Matthew Boss, incorporating these projections with the recent divestment of its Lee brand. Boss models top-line growth at 4% through FY28, which he “prudently” based on 3%+ growth at Wrangler and high-single-digits at Helly Hansen, while on the bottom-line, adjusted EBITDA margin is expected to expand ~20% by FY28. Kontoor Brands ( KTB ) is in the “early innings” of its growth opportunities, Boss says, with Wrangler underpenetrated internationally and Helly Hansen’s unaided brand awareness at just 3% in the U.S. At the same time, Boss cites the 3.6% CAGR of the global denim market, supported by the “casualization” of fashion trends and consumers wearing denim on average an additional day per week. In terms of market share, the two top names within the U.S. denim market are Levi Strauss ( LEVI ) with a 10.7% market share and Wrangler with a 6.3% share, with the latter increasing its market share by 25 basis points every year on average since 2019. “Taking this a step further, Wrangler stands within the Value U.S. Denim segment with a $16B total addressable market, holding a 7.3% market share and second to Levi’s ( LEVI ) 12.5% Value denim share. Wall Street analysts and Seeking Alpha authors both view Kontoor Brands ( KTB ) as a Buy. Seeking Alpha’s Quant rating, however, rates the stock as a Sell and a Quant score of just 1.91. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., speaks during the news conference following the House Republican Conference caucus meeting at the Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Bill Clark | CQ-Roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images The U.S. House is poised to vote to on a $70 billion package to fund immigration enforcement agencies and, after months of partisan fighting, send the measure to President Donald Trump 's desk. The package would fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, two Department of Homeland Security subagencies left out of an earlier spending bill amid Democratic opposition, and bring to an end a drawn-out debate over immigration enforcement policy that began in January and led to a government shutdown. A final House vote to pass the immigration funding package could come as soon as Tuesday. The Senate passed the package early Friday morning on a 52-47 vote. It would fund the immigration enforcement agencies through the end of Trump's presidency. Sen. Lisa Murkowski , R-Alaska, was the lone Republican to vote against it. "We were forced to use the reconciliation process because Democrats objected – during the appropriations process – to giving any money to Border Patrol and ICE, effectively shutting our border security down at a time of growing threats to the nation," Sen. Lindsey Graham , R-S.C., chair of the Senate budget panel, said in a statement on Friday after the measure passed. Graham was referring to the budget reconciliation process, which allows for the passage of legislation in the Senate on a party-line vote. "In less than two years, President Trump has taken the border from the most broken to the most secure in history. The bill we passed today locks those gains in through the rest of his term," Graham continued. Read more CNBC politics coverage Michael Dell courted Trump early. Alexey_Fedoren Mizuho raised the price targets on Sandisk ( SNDK ), Seagate Technology ( STX ), and Western Digital ( WDC ) as it continues to see AI driving a supply-demand imbalance in the memory market. In addition, the firm highlighted upsides for Broadcom ( AVGO ) and Micron Technology ( MU ). The firm increased Sandisk's price target to $2,200 from $1,825, Seagate's price target to $1,090 from $875, and Western Digital to $685 from $550. Mizuho maintained its Outperform rating on all three stocks. "We continue to see AI as the driving force behind the supply demand imbalance in the memory market, as we note increasing demand in 2027/28E could add further pressure to the market. We continue to see 2026/27E DRAM wafer starts up 10%/up 6% y/y, driven mostly by increasing HBM demand, though we note the higher HBM trade ratio limits growth, while we estimate demand growing 27%/24% y/y, respectively. Within NAND, we note eSSD as the key driver of demand, as we estimate 2026/27E total NAND demand growing 18%/18% y/y, while wafer starts are estimated down 5%/up 3% y/y as we see no significant supply online until 2028E," said analysts led by Vijay Rakesh. The analysts said that they hosted their quarterly AI Application-Specific Integrated Circuit, or ASIC, roadmap call and noted key updates. The analysts said that their call noted a potential more than 35M Google's ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ) Tensor Processing Units, or TPU shipments in 2028E (up eight times from 2026 about 4.3M, and 2025 around 2.4M), as Google looks to scale TPU externally with Anthropic and others. The analysts noted that it is significantly above their estimates of about 7M ASIC shipments for Broadcom, implying significant upside. Additionally, the analysts noted that Broadcom could see 50M total TPU shipments from 2026 to 2028, which provide some upside alongside accelerating demand for Meta ( META ) Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, or MTIA, v3/4/5 and OpenAI's upcoming ASIC, which Broadcom will b...

The idea of controlling machines with one’s mind used to be a staple of a certain kind of science fiction. Now it’s quickly becoming reality. Implantable brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, have empowered disabled individuals to browse the internet, move robotic arms and transcribe some of their thoughts into text. As rapid advances in hardware and artificial intelligence fuel further technological breakthroughs, companies are paving the way for such devices to be used more broadly. A group of startups in China are leading the charge. With backing from the state, they are catching up to western companies like Elon Musk’s Neuralink. On this episode of Bloomberg Primer , we meet one of the first Chinese patients to receive a brain-chip implant, and take a look inside companies that could be central to Beijing’s goal of being a world leader in brain technology by 2030. China’s approach to brain technology comes from the same industrial playbook that has propelled domestic industries like electric vehicles to global dominance. The national roadmap calls for removing red tape to speed development and testing, spurring a wave of clinical trials to prove that such intrusive devices are safe and effective. This year, shortly after it officially designated BCI as one of six strategic future industries, China approved its first invasive BCI for commercial use. At its best, BCI technology promises to restore autonomy for millions of people who have lost it, whether due to paralysis, blindness, hearing loss or other medical conditions. By shedding light on the inner workings of the human brain, some hope BCI technology may lead to new forms of AI or allow for augmented human abilities — the latter raising thorny ethical concerns that, like BCI, used to be the exclusive province of fiction. On this episode of Bloomberg Primer , we explore this new stage of the technology, its potential to someday conjure medical miracles — and the dystopian risks of its misuse. Read More: China’...
