mustafaU The Strait of Hormuz will be open but under new conditions to be set by Iran and Oman, including a transit fee, Iran's ambassador to Moscow was quoted as saying on Monday, as per Reuters . "Of course, this strait will be open, but with new conditions to be determined by the Iranian and Omani authorities," Ambassador Kazem Jalali told the Russian newspaper Izvestia in an interview published on Monday. "We understand that Iran and Oman provide certain services related to this strait. And fees will be charged for those services," he said without elaborating. Oil prices surged more than $4 a barrel on Monday as escalating tensions in the Middle East rattled markets, with investors reacting to fresh Israeli strikes on Iran and renewed military action in Lebanon over the weekend. Concerns over potential disruptions to regional energy supplies and shipping routes added to the upward pressure on crude prices. Iran has asserted that a permanent peace deal should allow it to demand fees for ships passing through the strait, which would vary depending upon the type of ship, its cargo and prevailing conditions. That position is opposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. In late May, the U.S. warned Oman not to get involved in any effort with Iran to impose a toll and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Oman's ambassador had told him there were no plans to impose such tolls. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images News United Airlines ( UAL ) is unlikely to pursue a big merger after its failed bid for American Airlines ( AAL ), CEO Scott Kirby told Reuters in an interview, but the carrier remains open to buying airport slots, gates or other assets. "I think consolidation is unlikely for United ( UAL )," Kirby said on the sidelines of the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) annual meeting in Brazil. "That doesn't mean we won't still be in the market to buy assets, but consolidation is a low probability." Kirby defended the rationale behind the offer for American ( AAL ), saying it would've benefited consumers. While he believed labor groups, shareholders and customers would've supported the deal, American ( AAL ) leadership's opposition made it impractical. "You can't have the management team on record publicly saying it was anti-competitive ." When asked if United ( UAL ) would consider JetBlue Airways ( JBLU ) if it entered Chapter 11 reorganization, Kirby said it was unlikely due to JetBlue's cash and unencumbered assets. As for the ongoing fuel shock, Kirby said United ( UAL ) expects higher fares to put it on track to recover the full hit it has taken from surging fuel prices. The CEO rejected criticism by IATA Director General Willie Walsh that large U.S. airlines are squeezing out competition, saying United ( UAL ) and Delta Air Lines ( DAL ) are winning because they invested in services that customers value. "Customers care about the technology, the service, the reliability, the product," Kirby said. "They want a great experience. They don't just want a seat."
