Backlash against AI is taking an extremist turn, following in the footsteps of earlier techno-pessimist militants Sign up for the Breaking News US newsletter email When a 20-year-old man from Texas was arrested earlier this year for allegedly trying to burn down OpenAI ’s headquarters and Sam Altman’s house , authorities found an anti- AI manifesto alongside his lighter and a jug of kerosene. It was one of a spate of attacks that has caused alarm among researchers, the tech industry and law enforcement about the rise of anti-tech extremism. In April, an Italian “nature pilled” Instagram influencer was arrested in Rome and charged with plotting a series of anti-tech attacks that took inspiration from Ted “The Unabomber” Kaczynski. Two self-described “ecofascists” that carried out a deadly anti-Muslim attack on a mosque in San Diego last month also cited “AI slop” and JD Vance ’s ties to Palantir as motivations for their violence in their manifesto. An Indianapolis city councilor woke up earlier this year to gunshots being fired into his home before finding a note that read “NO DATA CENTERS”. Continue reading...

Swimwear season is upon us – so here’s our pick of the most flattering, practical and comfortable costumes • Jess Cartner-Morley’s June essentials The trick with swimwear shopping is to stick to well-established criteria. Your priorities, of course, are comfort, support, coverage and price. But while your demure black one-piece might cover those bases, you shouldn’t settle for a costume that does the bare minimum. Take tummy control swimwear. If you want support in that area, you don’t have to avoid bikinis. Try a high waist pair with a built-in control panel, or a tank top. Ruching is fairly standard these days (as is a tie at the side) and does the trick by tucking everything away. If in doubt, wear something printed to distract. Continue reading...

BING-JHEN HONG/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Investment Thesis I am initiating ASE Technology Holding Co., Ltd. ( ASX ) with a Buy rating. The thesis rests primarily on the fact that ASX is transitioning from a low-margin outsourced semi assembly & test shop into a high-margin specialized packaging service, and the market still prices it like its legacy model. LEAP Services is ASX's leading-edge advanced packaging business serving AI and HPC customers. It went from $600 million in FY2024 to $1.6 billion in FY2025, and management just guided it above $3.5 billion for FY2026. That's an increase of almost 6× in just two years. All of this is happening while the ATM segment that is responsible for LEAP now generates a 26% gross margin, bringing consolidated margins above 20% for the first time since the semiconductor supercycle. At ~3.9 times forward revenue and ~28x forward earnings, ASX is not cheap on a standalone basis. Even so, it's being valued as an OSAT when its economics are rapidly shifting. The Dominant OSAT-And the Market Has Already Noticed ASE Technology is a Taiwanese firm and the world's largest OSAT provider. It also controls 44.6% of the global OSAT, three times that of its closest competitor, Amkor. The company operates two segments. The first is assembly, testing, and materials (ATM), which now accounts for ~65% of revenue, and the second is electronic manufacturing services (EMS), providing the remaining 35%. What makes ASX appealing today is how it has structurally transitioned into the ATM. The LEAP, which is ASX's premium, highly specialized platform, is already running at full capacity due to hyperscaler demand that's strongly ahead of supply. Nvidia is grabbing packaging business away from both TSMC and ASX. At the end of last month, ASX introduced automated 310mm panel-level packaging, a next-generation solution to solve production challenges that will translate into a significant increase in production. Voters to choose between pro-Russian opposition and incumbent Nikol Pashinyan, who is more closely aligned with the west Armenians are going to the polls in an election that could cement the country’s shift towards Europe and away from its traditional alliance with Russia. Prime minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party enters the vote as the favourite, ahead of three opposition candidates who advocate for closer ties with Moscow. Pashinyan’s main challenger, Samvel Karapetyan, a Russian-Armenian billionaire who built much of his fortune in Russia, has been forced to campaign from house arrest at his mansion outside Yerevan. felixmizioznikov/iStock Editorial via Getty Images I am a firm believer that multiple things that seem contradictory can be true at the same time. For instance, as I have been arguing since August of last year, the US is barreling toward a recession. This would naturally prove bearish for investors in many industries, including the automotive retail space. But at the same time, I have been quite bullish on some of these firms. The fact of the matter is that shares of these businesses are cheap, and the management teams at them have been successful in rapidly growing operations. Where these two ideas cross is the realization that a stock can be so cheap that, even if economic conditions worsen and financial performance deteriorates, the business can still make for a compelling prospect. That is the stance that I have had when it comes to AutoNation ( AN ), a major automotive retailer with a market capitalization today of $6.42 billion. In my last article about the company, published in early December of last year, I acknowledged that the firm would be facing a bumpy road ahead. And yet, I remained bullish because of how the stock was priced and the historical track record of management. Since then, the firm has unfortunately underperformed the market, dropping 9.8% while the S&P 500 is up 9.9%. But even with the weakening that we have seen as of late, I maintain that this is a valid candidate for long term investors to focus on. Taking a test drive of AutoNation Author - SEC EDGAR Data In the chart above, you can see financial performance for the firm for the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years. This showed that, during that time, top line performance for the business improved, and, with it, profitability improved as well. However, the most recent data that we have shows a more unsettling picture. In the chart below, you can see exactly what I mean. This data covers the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same time of 2025. Author - SEC EDGAR Data During this period of time...
