BalkansCat/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Franklin Resources' ( BEN ) Western Asset Management elevated Michael Buchanan to the post of chief investment officer as Ken Leech is on leave of absence to focus on regulatory matters, effective immediately. The news comes after the San Mateo, California-based company announced a $100M settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission over an investigation into the practices of Leech. BEN shares were 1.25% lower at $31.57 during morning trading on Friday. In a practice known as cherry-picking, Leech had allegedly allocated hundreds of millions of dollars in trades with net first-day gains to certain favored portfolios and hundreds of millions of dollars in trades with net realized and unrealized first-day losses to other portfolios. "Western Asset failed to take reasonable steps to detect and prevent this conduct by its former co-CIO," the settlement document had said. Buchanan had been serving as co-chief investment officer with Leech. The new CIO has also assumed leadership of all global investment management responsibilities. In light of Leech's leave of absence, Franklin Resources is closing its Macro Opportunities strategy. The fund had ~$2.0B in assets under management as of July 31, 2024. Franklin seeks to move on from Leech with a revamp of Western Asset, Bloomberg News reported on June 5. Western CEO Thomas Gahan is reportedly set to step aside from the role as of June 30. Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! Before the Geopolitics World Cup circus gets under way, Real Madrid would like you to know there’s always another show in town. Los Blancos have an odd, difficult relationship with the tournament. Spain’s 2010 triumph involved Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Iker Casillas being bolted on to a raft of Barcelona players, somewhat demeaning to any aristocratic pretensions. Back in 2018, Madrid upended the Spain national team by snaffling away Julen Lopetegui to be their coach, such that he was sent back from Russia before a ball was kicked. After Fernando Hierro, a Madrileno final boss, took the reins, the tournament was a bust for Spain, and relations have been strained ever since. Yesterday Ray Anselmo questioned why Andoni Iraola would join Liverpool, who won something last year and then weren’t satisfied with fifth place and the quarter-finals of Bigger Cup this year. Is it safe to assume that Ray is a Spurs fan?” – Neale Redington. Jon Millard is stout in his defence of AOR musos but I disagree with his comment that Tapestry (Carole King) has no links with ‘Antipodean Journeymen’. Surely So Far Away and Home Again allude to travels of the two Australasian teams – the latter probably applying a short time after the teams land in North America. And Where you Lead could apply should one of these teams snatch the first goal in a match? Beautiful is a normal epithet of the game of association football, OK not always bandied about when discussing Kiwi or Aussie football, but y’know. Will You Love Me Tomorrow: of course we will, even when faint hopes are dashed in the group stage. Lastly, I feel the Earth Move is mainly a song about a daily occurrence here in the shaky isles of New Zealand, but should we win a match …” – Rod de Lisle. A simple request on behalf of the rest of us friendless virtual barflies – please publish every single response to Jon Millard’s broadside. The fact that Toto, Boston, Journey, and the entir...

The bull market is expected to continue despite recent investor fatigue around artificial intelligence stocks, according to Sarah Malek, chief investment officer at Nuveen. The market is benefiting from strong earnings growth, continued AI investment, and a resilient economy as the three key drivers that will push markets higher. In an interview with CNBC ahead of the June jobs report, Malek acknowledged that investors have developed “AI fatigue” following Broadcom’s disappointing guidance earlier in the week but emphasized that a pause in markets doesn’t signal the end of the current rally. “A pause in the markets does not mean an end to the bull markets because there’s still three factors that can drive this market higher,” she said, noting that first quarter earnings are tracking toward approximately 30% year-over-year growth. On the upcoming jobs data, Malek predicted payrolls would beat consensus expectations of 80,000, coming in closer to 115,000. She cautioned that a significantly weaker number could initially spook markets before investors begin pricing in potential Fed rate cuts, while a much hotter reading could eventually lead to concerns about additional rate hikes. “What I am watching today, though, is wage inflation,” she said, warning that elevated wage growth combined with higher oil prices from geopolitical tensions could complicate the Federal Reserve’s path forward. Regarding the anticipated wave of major tech IPOs, including SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic, Malek views them as positive catalysts for the technology sector. She noted that Broadcom’s recent guidance issues were related to supply chain bottlenecks with TSMC rather than demand concerns. “IPOs like Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX are only going to help that narrative,” she added. Malek reiterated Nuveen’s bullish stance on technology stocks, which the firm has maintained throughout the year. “We follow the earnings growth and fundamentals,” she explained, noting that tech is leading earnin...

In this article XYZ AMZN Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNT Amazon's original Proteus robot has been rolled out in 25 fulfilment centers in the U.S. Sawdah Bhaimiya Amazon has unveiled its latest warehouse robot that can take commands in conversational language, underscoring how AI-powered automation is advancing as companies continue to slash their corporate workforce in AI-driven efficiencies. The tech giant's next-generation Proteus is an autonomous mobile robot, which is designed to understand natural language commands from workers and transport items in warehouses. It was launched at the company's Delivering the Future event in London on Thursday. The original Proteus was first deployed in Amazon fulfillment centers in 2022 to assist workers, including transporting heavy carts weighing up to 400 kilograms. It's currently used in 25 fulfillment centers in the U.S., with the latest version of the robot set to be rolled out in Europe in the first half of 2027. Workers will be able to direct the new Proteus in plain language, without technical commands or a programming interface. It's part of a broader push to expand the technology in Europe, with Amazon also committing to investing 10 billion euros ($11.6 billion) to modernize fulfillment operations in the region over the next few years. Amazon's original warehouse robot Proteus carries a cart at its LCY3 Fulfilment Center in Dartford. Sawdah Bhaimiya Other robotics advancements include its first robot with a sense of touch, Vulcan, and a robotic tote handling system called STARK. The announcement comes as Amazon continues to push ahead with AI-driven layoffs, including cutting 14,000 corporate workers in October as it looks to invest further in the technology. It said it's laying off a further 16,000 workers in January to reduce layers and bureaucracy. CEO Andy Jassy told staff last year that AI will result in a shrinking of Amazon's workforce over the coming years. "We will need fewer people doing s...

Joaquin Corbalan/iStock via Getty Images Lynas Rare Earths ( LYSCF ) ( LYSDY ) down 3.2% in Friday's trading after saying it appointed current COO Pol Le Roux as interim CEO from June 30, succeeding Amanda Lacaze, who is retiring from the leadership role after 12 years. Since joining Lynas ( LYSCF ) ( LYSDY ) in 2010, a few years before Lacaze, Le Roux has held positions as VP of sales and marketing as well as VP of downstream operations, after previously serving at French chemicals company Rhône-Poulenc, which is now a part of Belgium-based Solvay. "Pol has over 20 years of experience in the rare earths industry and is recognized among our customers, investors, and industry for his extensive knowledge of Lynas' operations and the rare earths market," Lynas ( LYSCF ) ( LYSDY ) Chair John Humphrey said. The appointment of an interim CEO highlights the complexity of the role, which requires "not only operational and strategic capability but also strong stakeholder management amid heightened geopolitical dynamics," Macquarie analysts said in a note. The bank called Le Roux a pair of "safe hands operationally," as one of Lynas' ( LYSCF ) ( LYSDY ) most experienced executives, but the appointment of a permanent CEO will nevertheless be a near-term focus for investors, alongside the ramp-up of the Kalgoorlie plant.
