The central bank conducted no seven-day reverse repurchase operations on Wednesday and Thursday. Photo: VCG The People’s Bank of China has halted daily short-term liquidity injections for two straight sessions, a technical move analysts say reflects ample cash in the banking system rather than a shift toward monetary tightening. The central bank conducted no seven-day reverse repurchase operations on Wednesday and Thursday, after cutting the size of such operations to 11 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) on Monday and just 200 million yuan on Tuesday. As earlier operations matured, the reductions resulted in net daily liquidity withdrawals of 247 billion yuan, 248.8 billion yuan, 177.6 billion yuan and 101.3 billion yuan over the four trading days.

Shares of EHang Holdings ( EH ) fell more than 6% after UBS downgraded the Chinese eVTOL developer to Neutral from Buy, citing slower-than-expected commercialization of its passenger-carrying aircraft and lowering its price target to $11.10 from $21.00. In a research note, UBS said two key issues prompted the downgrade. First, commercial operations for EHang's electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Hefei and Guangzhou remain dependent on government approvals, with no clear timeline for broader deployment. Second, EHang revised its 2025 revenue downward by ~RMB90M, or 18%, after reassessing revenue recognition for certain transactions. While UBS continues to view EHang as a leader in China's passenger eVTOL market, the firm cut its 2026-2028 shipment and revenue forecasts by 50% to 70%. The bank now expects the company to reach breakeven in 2029-2030, versus its previous forecast of 2026-2027, and estimates revenue projections remain 30%-50% below consensus expectations. UBS noted that China's eVTOL market could eventually reach RMB3B by 2030, driven primarily by sightseeing and tourism applications, and believes EHang could still capture more than 50% market share due to its first-mover advantage and regulatory certifications. Despite the downgrade, UBS highlighted progress overseas, including test flights in Thailand and plans to deliver 100 aircraft to 20 approved operating zones there in 2026. However, the firm said investor sentiment remains weak until commercial operations scale more meaningfully and regulatory approvals are secured. Gargolas/iStock via Getty Images CMS Energy ( CMS ) is little changed in Thursday's trading as Jefferies downgrades the Michigan-based utility to Hold from Buy with a $74 price target, cut from $88, saying the surprise departure of CFO Rejji Hayes and other factors may weigh on investor confidence. CMS ( CMS ) said Wednesday that Hayes is retiring as CFO, effective immediately, to be succeeded by Senior VP Sri Maddipati, "represents a further headwind for shares working to return to a premium valuation," according to Jefferies analyst Julien Dumoulin-Smith. "The departure of a top-decile CFO leaves us less confident in the ability for CMS to regain its premium relative valuation," the analyst says, and "correctly or incorrectly, investors will view the CFO transition as leading to a higher probability of an unfavorable EPS rebasing with a potential NorthStar divestiture." "The unexpected departure comes at a very vulnerable time for the stock," Dumoulin-Smith says, with "investor confidence at a multi-year low with concerns on the absence of data center announcements, NorthStar potential asset sale/EPS reset, upcoming Michigan elections, and comparison to peer DTE on annual electric rate cases." Zelensky Pens Lengthy Letter To Putin: 'Enough Of War, I Am Proposing A Meeting' On Thursday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin in a rare open letter sent to the Russian leader. It said Ukraine is also ready for a "full ceasefire." "Ukraine proposes ending this war through direct engagement between us - and you. I am proposing a meeting ," Zelensky said in the letter. "Ukraine is ready for a full ceasefire for the duration of the negotiations," he added. The letter, which is somewhat lengthy at one point says, "The choice is yours now. Enough of war " and then spells out that "Ukraine proposes to end this war." "This must be done honestly, with dignity, and with guarantees that the war will not be reignited," Zelensky added. And then interestingly, "We see that the United States is fully focused on the issue of Iran, and it would be wrong to simply wait until the war in Europe returns to the center of its attention . " via AP/The Hill The new letter was issued just Europe's most influential powers of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are trying to again jump-start Ukraine war peace talks, collectively operating as the E3 group. They seek to implement a new framework aimed at engaging Russian President Vladimir Putin in direct negotiations to end the war. Reuters on Wednesday reports that "A window for dialogue is slowly opening between Russia and Europe on Ukraine, although it is likely to be months before talks can begin, a German government official said at a briefing on Wednesday." It seems this window of opportunity is based to some degree on perceptions that the war tide and momentum is finally shifting in Ukraine's favor, given the increasing effectiveness of Ukraine's devastating cross-border drone attacks of late. European leaders apparently view the current battlefield and political dynamics as having strengthened Kiev's bargaining position, creating what they believe is the optimal moment to p...

watch now VIDEO 3:14 03:14 Israel and Lebanon agree to implement U.S.-brokered ceasefire Squawk Box Europe Nearly 40 ships previously stranded in the Persian Gulf have exited through the Strait of Hormuz over the past three weeks as vessels quietly coordinate with the U.S. Navy, according to Lloyd's List Intelligence. Some shipowners are submitting their transit plans to the Naval Cooperation and Guidance for Shipping group in Bahrain, said Richard Meade, editor-in-chief of Lloyd's List, in a briefing Thursday. The assumption is that the U.S. Navy is providing limited assurances that it will intercept incoming threats against commercial ships, Meade said. The Navy is not providing actual escorts, he said. "Transit decisions remain solely with ship operators," Meade said. "Industry operators tell us that they are not being centrally coordinated." Ship transits through Hormuz still remain way below prewar levels. Traffic through the sea lane fell to the lowest point of the U.S.-Iran conflict in May, according to Lloyd's List. President Donald Trump in early May abruptly shut down a short-lived U.S. Navy mission, called Project Freedom , that sought to get traffic flowing by escorting ships stranded in the Gulf through Hormuz. Ships stuck in the Gulf risk attack by Iranian forces unless they receive Tehran's approval to transit a designated route through Hormuz. The vessels also risk U.S. sanctions if they cooperate with Iran. Clashes over ship transits U.S. and Iranian forces have clashed in and around Hormuz earlier this week, briefly spiking oil prices as investors worried that the ceasefire would collapse and full-scale war would resume. U.S. Central Command said Tuesday the exchange of fire started with Iran launching three attack drones toward "civilian mariners that were rightfully transiting regional waters." U.S. forces shot down those drones and carried out self defense strikes against Iranian forces on Qeshm Island, CENTCOM said. Iran then launched ballistic...

First Test: England 140; New Zealand 61-6 Paceman’s stunning return gives England the edge It took two years for Ollie Robinson to force his way back into the England set-up and then about five minutes to win over their supporters. Steaming in from the Nursery End, Robinson produced a devastating three-wicket first over – and four overall – to cap an absurd opening day against New Zealand. Some 16 wickets fell across only 60 overs of rain-affected play and, if this Test was being played in Australia, the groundsman might be feeling twitchy about having to give a press conference on Saturday. The pitch may ease up before then, even if the quicks on both sides will be hoping it stays just as fruity. Continue reading...
