Andi Edwards/iStock via Getty Images Broadcom Inc. ( AVGO ) just caused a major slash in the world of chips after reporting its Q2 '26 earnings results on Wednesday after the bell. The results were a disappointment, even as Broadcom bulls; there is no other way to put it. The problem is that everyone knew the good news heading into print, and worse is that there was little expectation of red flags, but we got some. This is a cocktail for a reset to stock and expectations, and that’s what we’re seeing Thursday morning. YahooFinance The Three-Strike Disappointment For the quarter, Broadcom reported sales of $22.19B, in line with the base expectation of $22.12B but missing LSEG expectations of $22.27B. Outlook did not move the needle meaningfully despite management guiding for sales to grow 32.5% sequentially to $29.4B, beating expectations for $28.5B but not enough to impress. The top-line print and guide against expectations were strike number one for the Q2 print. That’s what first began to pull the stock back by roughly 4%. This is the result of a run-up in expectations; into print, Broadcom saw 42 upward EPS revisions versus only 1 downward. Expectations caught up as did the stock price run with Broadcom shares gaining about 63% since late March and 13% in the past five days alone. Things got worse on the earnings call , and that’s where strikes two and three come out. The second strike was the lack of any upward revisions to AI-related revenue for 2027 beyond the stated 10 GW and +$100B figure for its six core AI custom ASIC businesses. Analysts pushed for a higher guide during the Q&A but got none outside of commentary about strength extending into 2028. This doesn’t fare well against Marvell ( MRVL ), which reported last Tuesday and raised its FY27 data center sales guide from 40% Y/Y growth to 50% and its FY28 guide from 50% to 55%, marking the fourth time we’ve seen Marvell raise guidance. And, guess what? Last week, even that did not impress investors, with ...

Devrimb/iStock via Getty Images We have reached the bargaining stage of the bubble. This is a point where anyone who can pull up the 4 basic valuation metrics on stocks stops trying to argue that this is not a bubble. Instead they fall back on "bargaining" with remaining investors. This bargaining involves telling everyone who will listen, "It is a bubble, but it is not as bad as 2000." Underlying that is an assumption that we are all entitled to bubbles as large as the Dot-Com. Until we have the greatest fool willing to buy at that level of insanity, this bubble cannot possibly end. Well, we are here to tell you that the stock market is way past that level of insanity. How To Spot The Bubble Yes. There was the explosion of profitless companies during the 1999-2000 timeframe. EToys and the works did list and go to zero. Some argue that a lack of IPOs of that level is suggestive that this is not a bubble. But that argument holds no water as those IPOs are coming. SpaceX stands as exhibit A. Valuing a company that hasn’t made money at $1.8 trillion seems aggressive at best, foolhardy at worst. SpaceX lost $5 billion last year, but its listing will price it at about 95 times last year’s revenue of around $19 billion. “Aiming to achieve something that has never been done on a scale never seen by leveraging technology that does not currently exist, comes with some risks,” said Thomas Shipp, head of equity research at LPL Financial. “All of this adds up to a future-focused company with no shortage of opportunities and risks whose size, profitability, and ambitious timelines set it up for a potentially volatile introduction to public markets.” Source: Barron's Barron's politely telling people, "Even we can't generate enough suspension of disbelief here." Interestingly enough, S&P broke all of its own rules to ensure SpaceX would be entered into the S&P 500 index. On April 30, S&P Dow Jones Indices opened what it called a “Consultation on the Treatment of MegaCap Companies....

Hedge funds and asset managers are increasingly using artificial intelligence when investing in global credit markets, but the technology isn’t replacing human traders — at least for now, according to a survey by Barclays Plc . While AI has moved beyond the experimental, ad-hoc phase among all investor types, it is primarily being used for research, securities screening and analysis, complementing rather than replacing human judgment, the survey found. “Overall, AI is expected to reshape roles and workflows rather than materially reduce headcount in the near term,” strategists Zornitsa Todorova and Andrea Diaz Lafuente wrote in a Thursday note. “The dominant view is higher productivity with broadly stable headcount.” Only 7% of the 410 buyside investors across North America, EMEA and Asia surveyed by Barclays last month expect meaningful reductions in staff. AI is primarily being used for research, accounting for 44% of responses among hedge funds and 52% for both asset owners and long-only asset managers, followed by modeling and risk analysis. So far, AI is acting primarily as support for investors, with securities screening accounting for 25% to 26% of responses for hedge funds and long-only managers, and 20% for asset owners, the survey shows. AI’s penetration in trading and execution remain minimal, at least with 77% of hedge funds, 84% of long-only managers and 88% of asset owners saying AI plays a limited role. Its usage in portfolio construction remains relatively small across all groups, the strategists added. Electronic and high-speed trading, innovations that already dominate equity markets, has slowly been reshaping debt markets in what has been called the “equitification of credit.” Security and data privacy is the biggest constraint across all groups, reflecting the sensitivity of trading data, proprietary models and client information, according to Barclays. Other challenges holding back AI adoption include regulation, compliance and cultural resistan...

Investors will buy into the market-leading tech and cult of Musk despite a price that is defying gravity “Our mission,” says the opening sentence of SpaceX’s listing document with a straight face, “is to build the systems and technologies necessary to make life multi-planetary, to understand the true nature of the universe, and to extend the light of consciousness to the stars.” The last bit has an echo of the laughable WeWork, which was going to “elevate the world’s consciousness” via the medium of shared office spaces. But, yes, if SpaceX could tick off all the items on Elon Musk’s to-do list, one could make a case that the company should be valued at $1.77tn. Continue reading...

FabrikaCr/iStock via Getty Images Market Review Despite a strong final day rally, stocks suffered through a difficult first quarter. For the quarter, the S&P 500® Index declined 4.35% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index fell 6.96%. Stocks reached record highs in January as investors ignored a weak jobs report, choosing instead to emphasize a growing economy. This strategy worked for a couple of weeks, but stocks faltered, first on threats of new trade restrictions on Europe, and later by disappointing earnings from Microsoft. Stocks eventually recovered to finish the month in positive territory but off of their highs. Technology stocks led stocks lower in February as the S&P 500® Index lost 0.76%, with the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite dropping 3.33%. On several occasions during the month, various technology and financial stocks were hurt by the perceived AI impact on future software. Industrial stocks performed considerably better during the month as the Dow Jones Industrial Average crossed the 50,000 milestone for the first time. The escalating war with Iran battered markets in March leading to substantial stock declines. The closing of the Strait of Hormuz and threats to Middle East energy infrastructure pushed oil prices dramatically higher in the month. The potential negative effects on both inflation and economic growth put increasing pressure on stocks. Frazzled investors finally received some relief on the last day of the month as positive comments from the White House caused a spike in stocks, pushing the S&P 500® up 2.9% and the Nasdaq Composite up 3.8% on the day. Even so, the S&P 500® dropped 4.98% in March, bringing its first quarter return to -4.35%. Bonds also fell in March as higher interest rates resulted in a 1.76% loss for the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Total Return Index, bringing its YTD return to -0.05%. First Quarter Convertibles Investment grade convertibles performed very well during the first quarter, providing positive results during a d...

In this article BTC.CM= Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNT Jonathan Raa | Nurphoto | Getty Images Bitcoin is getting pummeled to kick off June as the market loses its dominant narrative and liquidity continues to rotate into other assets. The combination has left the flagship cryptocurrency vulnerable to further downside pressure as investors scale back risk and capital shifts toward markets with more momentum or more obvious near-term catalysts, like the chip rally or the SpaceX IPO. Bitcoin is down 13% this week and heading for its worst week since February, according to Coin Metrics. It's a familiar feature of crypto cycles: when the main narrative loses momentum, liquidity shifts quickly to other parts of the market. And absent a fresh catalyst to help support demand, bitcoin becomes vulnerable to sharp, flow-dominated price moves. Now, traders are reassessing what's supposed to be driving the next leg of the cycle. On Wednesday, bitcoin ETFs registered their 13th day in a row — and longest streak ever — of net outflows, according to SoSoValue. Total assets across the funds fell to $82.8 billion from $107.8 billion on May 14. The flows are the "primary driver of BTC price appreciation, explaining approximately 45% of weekly return variation, and the best vehicle for tracking investor adoption/appetite," Citi analyst Alex Saunders said in a note. He added that bitcoin's key catalyst for renewed investor interest – the chances of passage of the crypto market structure bill known as the CLARITY Act – is drifting further out of reach as legislative priorities shift and lawmakers remain divided on key provisions of the bill. "We expect sentiment to remain lackluster, especially as the divergence with equity performance remains stark, absent positive news on the regulatory front or 'de-basement trade' fears around fiscal position," Saunders said. What happened this week This week's key trigger was a surprise disclosure on Monday from Michael Saylor's Stra...

hapabapa Amazon ( AMZN ) introduced its Prime service in South Africa this week to mark another strategic escalation in its push to become a dominant everyday retailer in the country, rather than just another online marketplace. The company priced Prime aggressively in the new market at 59 South African rand a month ($3.62) or 399 rand a year ($24.47). The Prime bundle mirrors Amazon's ( AMZN ) playbook in developed markets, including fast, free delivery with no minimum spend on eligible items, streaming via Prime Video, gaming perks through services like Amazon Luna, and access to tent-pole events such as Prime Day. In South Africa, that delivery promise is localized, with same-day service in key metros such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria, and next-day nationwide on qualifying orders, which will be a direct challenge to incumbents like Takealot and on-demand offerings from retailers such as Shoprite. The timing underscores Amazon's ( AMZN ) confidence that South Africa’s e-commerce market has reached a scale where a loyalty program can materially shift share. Amazon ( AMZN ) was launched in South Africa just two years ago. Analysts have described South Africa as a gateway or entry point to the African continent within Amazon's ( AMZN ) wider global expansion strategy. "Since launching Amazon in South Africa two years ago, we have built a store our customers love, with a great selection of local and international products backed by a reliable delivery experience. Launching Prime is the next exciting milestone on our journey in the country, deepening our commitment to becoming a meaningful part of South Africans' daily lives by offering even more convenience, savings, and entertainment," read a statement from the e-commerce giant.
