Dazman/E+ via Getty Images Iron ore prices tumbled in Asian trading Thursday following a sudden surge in exports from Guinea’s Simandou iron ore project, six months after the first shipment to China from the world's largest untapped, high-grade iron ore reserve. Shipments from Simandou's Morebaya port reached 2.2M tons in May, according to ship tracking data from Kpler, much higher than April's 1.3M tons and just 600K tons or less in each of the first three months of this year. The spike in shipments is coinciding with summer off-season steel demand, contributing to an increasingly oversupplied market in China , while a strong rally in coking coal has begun to squeeze steelmaking margins, reducing support for iron ore prices. The most-traded iron ore contract ( SCO:COM ) on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange closed daytime trade down 1.9% to 767.5 yuan/ton ($113.32), the weakest level since April 16, and the benchmark July contract on the Singapore Exchange recently traded down 1.8% at $101.75/ton, the lowest since March 9 and the largest daily loss since April 9. Simandou has been touted as a game-changer for the iron ore industry, with an annual 120M tons expected to be shipped once the project is at full capacity; the mine has four blocks, two owned by the China-Singapore-led Baowu Winning Consortium Simandou and two by Simfer, a joint venture of Rio Tinto ( RIO ) and Chinalco. Some of the recent increase in exports could be due to a government push for the two consortiums to work more efficiently together, dry bulk advisory Ifchor Galbraiths said in a note; "It's a way to optimize the royalty payment," according to head of research Vincent Lemaitre.
