Svitlana Pietukhova/iStock via Getty Images The last time I wrote about Fulcrum Therapeutics ( FULC ), it was with a Seeking Alpha article entitled " Next Set Of SCD Data Is Crucial For Continued Pipeline Advancement ." With respect to this article, I mentioned that the company was developing its oral, best-in-class fetal hemoglobin [HbF] inducer, pociredir, for the treatment of patients with Sickle Cell Disease [SCD] in an ongoing phase 1b study. I had a "Hold" rating, noting that the company was reliant on advancing this program forward because of a prior failure with losmapimod for the treatment of patients with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy [FSHD] in the phase 2 REACH trial. I'm going to maintain this "Hold" rating going forward even in light of the company having to cut the program of pociredir for the treatment of patients with SCD. More about this below, but the key point is that another PRC2 inhibitor, Tazverik [tazemetostat], was pulled from the global market in March 2026. The premise was that the targeting of PRC2, regardless of what specific subunit is targeted, could carry the malignancy risk. Based on FDA feedback, plus the totality of the data, the company made the decision to discontinue the development of pociredir for the treatment of these patients with SCD. If this is the case, then why maintain the "Hold" rating? The reason why is because the company has plenty of cash to fund its operations. It believes that $333.3 million in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities will be enough to fund its operations into 2029. The premise for this is that the company has enacted two key items because of the program discontinuation. One is to preserve cash by reducing its operating expenses. The second item is that it expects to explore strategic alternatives to maximize shareholder value. The point here is that it could merge with another company, buy an asset to bring into the pipeline, or have another business transaction thereof. Theref...

huettenhoelscher/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Rheinmetall ( RNMBF )( RNMBY ) agreed to sell its Power Systems division to Munich-based industrial holding company Aequita for €350 million ($406 million), marking the German defense contractor's latest step away from the automotive supplier business and toward a greater focus on military and security markets. The transaction, expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026 pending regulatory approvals, includes the former power systems division, which generated approximately €2 billion in revenue in 2025. Rheinmetall said the business has been classified as a discontinued operation since its fourth-quarter 2025 reporting. For investors, the sale underscores Rheinmetall's ongoing transformation into a pure-play defense company at a time when European governments are increasing military spending and demand for defense equipment remains strong. By exiting lower-growth automotive operations, Rheinmetall is sharpening its focus on higher-margin defense programs spanning land systems, air defense, munitions and emerging opportunities in the air, sea and space domains. The divestiture follows Rheinmetall's earlier sales of its large- and small-bore piston businesses in 2023 and 2024. The company said it has spent the past several years repositioning itself around military customers and security agencies while expanding its defense-related technology portfolio. Chief Executive Armin Papperger described the transaction as a significant milestone in the company's strategic evolution, saying Rheinmetall sees attractive growth opportunities in its defense operations and sought a buyer capable of supporting the long-term development of the civilian business. Aequita said it plans to retain all approximately 6,250 employees associated with the acquired businesses and operate the division as an independent company. The well-known Pierburg, Kolbenschmidt and Motorservice brands will continue to operate under their existing names....

The US Supreme Court keeps bolstering Republicans, even as the justices insist they don’t play politics. The latest move came Tuesday night, when the court said Alabama could eliminate a majority-Black congressional district and in all likelihood flip a US House seat to Republicans as they vie to keep control of Congress in the November midterms. The four-page ruling , which drew a blistering dissent, expanded what was already a blockbuster April 29 decision rolling back use of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which protects minority voters. The decision made Alabama the fifth state where Republicans have won a Supreme Court redistricting battle in the past six months, compared with one Democratic victory. The high court and its Republican-appointed supermajority could give the GOP two more election-law victories in the coming weeks with scheduled rulings in campaign finance and ballot-deadline cases. Chief Justice John Roberts last month defended the court against accusations of partisanship. “We’re not simply part of the political process, and there’s a reason for that, and I’m not sure that people grasp that as much as is appropriate,” he said at a judicial conference. Fellow conservatives Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett have made similar comments in recent weeks. But the court keeps giving its critics more ammunition. The 6-3 decision Tuesday night rejected a three-judge panel’s conclusion that Alabama violated the Constitution by intentionally leaving Black voters just short of a majority in a pivotal district in a proposed map. The panel, which included two appointees of President Donald Trump , had required the state to keep using a map with two majority-Black districts. The unsigned opinion cleared Alabama Republicans to deploy their new map even though the lower court said the move would spawn chaos by requiring election officials to shift 600,000 voters into different districts in time for the Aug. 11 primary. “States are free to decide for themselves whethe...

A global shortage of memory chips fueled by the artificial intelligence boom poses a growing risk to industries ranging from automakers to producers of medical devices, according to a coalition of US business groups who urged the Trump administration to help increase supply of the components. In a letter Wednesday to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick , nine trade associations representing a range of industries warned that the memory shortage threatens to disrupt critical supply chains and is likely to raise consumer prices in the near term. The coalition blamed the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers for consuming a disproportionate amount of memory chip capacity, resulting in “an unprecedented surge in the price of memory chips and reduced supply of these chips for manufacturing and consumer-facing industries.” “While recent developments in AI offer the promise of generational technological advances and are important for US tech leadership, we must also ensure other key industries are not negatively impacted by this disruption in the marketplace,” wrote the groups. Signers included the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the Medical Device Manufacturers Association and the National Retail Federation. Read More: SK Hynix Plans to Double Capacity to Ease Memory Chip Crunch The trade associations said that in addition to increasing prices for consumer electronics, costs are also rising for internet and telecommunications infrastructure, while cars, medical devices and other manufactured goods could face shortages. Federal contractors, especially small businesses, also face challenges in meeting procurement obligations. Memory chips have been in short supply as AI drives unprecedented demand for products once considered commodities. Chip designers like Nvidia Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. are paying top dollar for the high-bandwidth memory needed to build AI hardware, leading memory providers to prioritize t...
